The Associations Between Diabetes Distress, Diet, and psychosocial Factors in Hispanic and Latino Adults Living With Type 2 Diabetes in the U.S.: Results From An Online Survey.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to explore the associations between dietary intake, social support, acculturation, coping, and diabetes distress (DD) levels among Hispanic and Latino adults with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was administered using Qualtrics. Multiple linear regression models analyzed the relationships between DD, diabetes-related behaviors, diet, acculturation, social support, and coping. RESULTS: Participants (n = 200) were, on average, 48.8 ± 14.4 (mean ± SD) years old, born in the U.S. (83.5%), and had type 2 diabetes for 2

Cultural and religious influences on Arab American healthcare experiences: a qualitative study.

Immigrants negotiate aspects of their heritage and host cultures to adapt to their new social environment through the acculturation process. This process influences health and well-being in immigrant communities. Arab American immigrants in the United States face unique cultural dynamics that shape their experiences, including healthcare experiences. This study addresses a gap in knowledge about culture as a social determinant of health awareness, healthcare access, and healthcare quality among Arab Americans. Guided by acculturation theory, we conducted thematic analysis of semi-structured in

The changing picture of neoplastic disease in the western and central Canadian Arctic (1950-1980).

Data on 239 verified cases of malignant disease diagnosed from January 1950 through December 1980 in 104 male and 135 female Inuit from the western and central Canadian Arctic were reviewed. Tumours of the salivary glands, kidney and nasopharynx were the most frequent between 1950 and 1966, but their frequency declined thereafter. The most frequent tumours in the most recent period studied were lung, cervical and colorectal cancers. Breast cancer was absent before 1966 and was found in only 2 of 107 Canadian Inuit women stricken with cancer from 1967 to 1980, whereas the recent rates in the lo

Concussion reporting intentions for incoming military athletes and cadets.

Cultures of concussion reporting exist outside athletics; however, athlete-only studies dominate the literature. Comparing athletes and similar high-risk populations broadens our understanding of concussion reporting acculturation. We aimed to (1) describe and compare concussion self-report willingness as measured by anticipated concussion reporting (ACR), perceived costs, perceived rewards, brain health knowledge, and correct symptom identification for incoming cadets at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) (n = 1,136; female = 276, 24.43%) and (2) determine whether those variables pre

Cultural adaptation congruence in immigrant spouses is associated with marital quality.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that cultural adaptation is associated with Mexican-origin couples' marital outcomes, including marital distress and rates of dissolution. However, research on the marital implications of different types of spousal differences in cultural adaptation often omits important dyadic dynamics (i.e., incongruence between couples and with their partners); this, coupled with existing methodological issues, might contribute to the pattern of mixed findings in the literature. METHOD: Using data from 273 Mexican-origin couples, we conducted response su

["Family groups" for relatives of patients with anorexia nervosa].

Anorexia must not be considered as a syndrome specific to a culture but as being linked to fast-moving sociocultural changes. Its occurrence can be favoured by certain transcultural phenomena, such as globalisation and the process of acculturation. The analysis of a clinical case of a young migrant with anorexia illustrates the complexity and need for complementary transcultural psychotherapy, to improve understanding and the future.

Sociocultural factors in puerperal infectious morbidity among Navajo women.

From 1980 to 1982, a sample of 968 pregnant Navajo women in New Mexico was enrolled in a prospective study of biologic and sociocultural factors in puerperal infectious morbidity. Past studies have independently implicated both genital infection and psychosocial stressors in perinatal complications, but, to the authors' knowledge, no previous work has concurrently investigated the interactive effects of genital pathogens and psychosocial processes. Endocervical cultures for Mycoplasma hominis and Chlamydia trachomatis were obtained during prenatal visits, and structured interviews were conduct

Decision involvement and receipt of mastectomy among racially and ethnically diverse breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the association between patient decision involvement and surgery received among racially and ethnically diverse patients or patients' attitudes about surgery and the role of family and friends in surgical treatment choices. METHODS: Women diagnosed with nonmetastatic breast cancer from June 2005 through February 2007 and reported to the Los Angeles or Detroit Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registries were mailed a survey after diagnosis (N = 3133). Latina and African American women were oversampled. The response rate was 72.4%. The analytic

Health assets among refugees in Australia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A health assets-based approach seeks to identify health-promoting or protective factors across multiple levels. Evidence of the health assets of refugees at the individual, family, and community levels in Australia is scarce. We aimed to synthesise current evidence from Australia to identify refugee health assets and explore how they influence health and well-being. We explored existing strengths that can be harnessed to ensure sustainable, equitable, and culturally responsive health interventions. METHODS: We systematically reviewed qualitative and quantitative observational and

Cultural Factors, Migrant Status, and Vulnerability to Increasing Temperatures among Hispanic/Latino Farmworkers: A Systematic Review.

HIGHLIGHTS: Cultural factors and acculturative stressors affect the health and safety behaviors of Hispanic/Latino farmworkers. Cultural factors and stressors also increase their risk of heat-related illnesses (HRIs). Interventions targeting HRIs in this population should account for cultural factors. ABSTRACT: Hispanic/Latino farmworkers have been widely recognized as a particularly vulnerable population in the U.S., with among the lowest levels of income and education in the country. Existing research has identified and explored factors, including cultural and demographic characteristics, t

Prevalence of sun protection behaviors in Hispanic youth residing in a high ultraviolet light environment.

Although rates of late-stage melanoma are rising in Hispanics, particularly those living in high ultraviolet light environments, little is known about the prevalence of sun protective behaviors in Hispanic children. We analyzed baseline data including frequency of sunburn, sun protective behaviors, level of U.S. acculturation, and skin phototype from a cross-sectional survey of 2003 Hispanic elementary school children in Los Angeles, California, who participated in a skin cancer prevention intervention. Although the Hispanic children reported frequently engaging in some sun protective behavior

Culturally Sensitive Depression Assessment for Chinese American Immigrants: Development of a Comprehensive Measure and a Screening Scale Using an Item Response Approach.

The present mixed methods study developed a comprehensive measure and a screening scale of depression for Chinese American immigrants by combining an emic approach with item response analysis. Clinical participants were immigrants diagnosed by licensed clinicians who worked in the community. Qualitative interviews with clinicians and clinical participants (N = 63) supported the definition of the construct of depression-which guided scale development-and a 47-item pilot scale. Clinical and community participants (N = 227) completed the pilot scale and measures of neurasthenia and acculturative

Adherence to treatment in children with epilepsy: who follows "doctor's orders"?

PURPOSE: The goal of the present study was to examine sociocultural, medical, family environment, and individual cognitive factors that predict adherence to treatment in children with epilepsy. METHODS: The study subjects (4-13 years old) were enrolled in a longitudinal seizure study at the first visit to the seizure clinic, attended at least 6 months, and had at least two appointments. Baseline predictors, which were obtained by interview, chart review, and psychometric testing, included sociocultural and family environment, seizure and previous treatment history, child behavior, cognitive f

Differences in self-rated health by immigrant status and language preference among Arab Americans in the Detroit Metropolitan Area.

Arab Americans are a growing minority in the U.S., yet only a few studies have examined their health utilizing representative samples. Using data from the 2003 Detroit Arab American Study, which is based on a probability sample, we examined the self-rated health (SRH) of Arab Americans by two measures of acculturation--immigrant status and language preference. We specified logistic regression models to test whether immigrants report better or poorer health status compared to U.S.-born Arab Americans and whether language preference among the immigrant generation accounts for the association bet

Menopausal symptoms and ethnicity: the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.

A number of studies have suggested that ethnic background influences a woman's perception of her symptoms. The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) is a multiethnic, longitudinal, cohort study of US women that includes non-Hispanic Caucasian, African-American, Chinese, Japanese and Hispanic women. The initial strategy for this seven-site study involved community-based recruitment of non-Hispanic Caucasians at each site, plus one minority ethnic group. Since ethnicity varies with many other factors, measures of education, acculturation, social status, psychological wellbeing and fin

The effect of social change on causal beliefs of mental disorders and treatment preferences in Ghana.

The present study investigated the associations between social change, personality, causal beliefs and treatment style and goal preferences of 375 Ghanaian teachers. The index of social change (ISC) was conceptualized as the average percentile rank of a person's income, education and acculturation. The self-report measures (greatly modified after two pilot studies) were subscales of the SuinnLew Acculturation Scale, the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire (dependency), the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (autonomy), the Symptom Checklist '90 (paranoid ideation), the Spheres of Control Scale, and th

Welfare status and psychosocial adjustment among 100 Hmong refugees.

Although the mental health of recently employed persons has been well studied, the mental health of welfare recipients is not well understood. Among our increasing refugee population, many receive welfare benefits at some point. The Hmong are among those who are highly represented among welfare recipients in several areas of the United States. Do psychiatrists have anything to contribute toward the resolution of high welfare rates? This question is especially relevant in refugee populations who are at increased risk for several psychiatric disorders, including depression, paranoia, and adjustm

Re-establishing and refining baseline neuropsychological test data among professional hockey players: part 2 regression-based adjustment of neuropsychological norms in professional hockey.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a regression-based approach provides a more appropriate normative framework for professional hockey players after accounting for estimated overall cognitive ability, language proficiency or acculturation, and baseline performance on other cognitive measures. METHODS: Players were randomly selected from club rosters to complete the National Hockey League/National Hockey League Players' Association (NHL/NHLPA) paper and pencil (PnP) concussion battery and English Proficiency Questionnaire (EPQ) during 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 pre-season camps (oversampling Primary

Barriers and Facilitators to Food Security among Adult Burundian and Congolese Refugee Females Resettled in the US.

Sub-Saharan African refugees in the US have reported food security rates seven times below the national average. Dietary acculturation issues may be a contributing factor. Criterion-specific sample (n = 18) was recruited using network then snowball sampling methods. Semi-structured interviews were facilitated with the aid of a culturally and linguistically appropriate interpreter. An iterative, two cycle coding analytic process was completed within NVivo 11 by two coders who sought inter-rater reliability. Codes were organized into hierarchical maps and coding matrices for direct content analy

Gut microbial diversity and candidate keystone taxa in Indian tribes: Insights across lifestyle-ecological continuum and health associations.

Despite the critical role of the gut microbiome in host physiology and health, it remains poorly characterized in Indigenous populations undergoing rapid acculturation. This study presents high-resolution, whole-genome metagenomic profiling of gut microbiota from five Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of Southern India, Irula, Jenu Kuruba, Kurumba, Chenchu, and Konda Savara, spanning distinct ecological zones and cultural transitions. Using an ecology-lifestyle continuum framework, we investigated taxonomic and functional diversity with a focus on identifying computationally inferr
