Dental Pulp Stem Cells for the Management of Plaque Biofilm-Associated Infections : A Review.

This structured narrative review synthesises current evidence (2000-2025) on the antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in the context of plaque-induced gingivitis and oral biofilm infections. We systematically reviewed peer-reviewed literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science via keywords related to DPSCs, oral biofilms, antimicrobial peptides (eg, β-defensins, LL-37), and immunomodulation. Unlike conventional antimicrobial therapies that solely target pathogen eradication, DPSCs offer a dual-function strategy: (1) direct microbia

Microbial Coaggregation in the Oral Cavity: Molecular Interactions and Current Insights.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues primarily caused by dysbiotic bacterial communities. Accumulating evidence suggests that periodontal pathogens not only drive the initiation and progression of periodontitis but also significantly contribute to systemic disorders, including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth. The key periodontal pathogens implicated in disease pathogenesis include Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Aggregatibact

The impact of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei GMNL-143 toothpaste on gingivitis and oral microbiota in adults: a randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the oral health benefits of heat-killed Lacticaseibacillus paracasei GMNL-143, particularly its potential in oral microbiota alterations and gingivitis improvement. METHODS: We assessed GMNL-143's in vitro interactions with oral pathogens and its ability to prevent pathogen adherence to gingival cells. A randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial was performed on gingivitis patients using GMNL-143 toothpaste or placebo for four weeks, followed by a crossover after a washout. RESULTS: GMNL-143 showed coaggregation with oral pathogens in vitro, linked to

Wheat germ agglutinin liposomes with surface grafted cyclodextrins as bioadhesive dual-drug delivery nanocarriers to treat oral cells.

Topical management of oral infection requires combined use of multiple classes of drugs and frequent dosing due to low drug retention rates. The sustained, co-delivery of drugs with different solubilities to cells using nanoparticle drug delivery systems remains a challenge. Here, we developed wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) conjugated liposomes with surface grafted cyclodextrin (WGA-liposome-CD) as bioadhesive dual-drug nanocarriers. We effectively encapsulated two physiochemically different drugs (ciprofloxacin and betamethasone) and demonstrated sustained co-drug release in saliva over a 24 h p

Periodontitis and myocardial hypertrophy.

There is a deep relationship between cardiovascular disease and periodontitis. It has been reported that myocardial hypertrophy may be affected by periodontitis in clinical settings. Although these clinical observations had some study limitations, they strongly suggest a direct association between severity of periodontitis and left ventricular hypertrophy. However, the detailed mechanisms between myocardial hypertrophy and periodontitis have not yet been elucidated. Recently, we demonstrated that periodontal bacteria infection is closely related to myocardial hypertrophy. In murine transverse

Modeling susceptibility to periodontitis.

Chronic inflammatory diseases like periodontitis have a complex pathogenesis and a multifactorial etiology, involving complex interactions between multiple genetic loci and infectious agents. We aimed to investigate the influence of genetic polymorphisms and bacteria on chronic periodontitis risk. We determined the prevalence of 12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in immune response candidate genes and 7 bacterial species of potential relevance to periodontitis etiology, in chronic periodontitis patients and non-periodontitis control individuals (N = 385). Using decision tree analysis, w

Quantification of subgingival bacterial pathogens at different stages of periodontal diseases.

Anaerobic gram-negative oral bacteria such as Treponema denticola, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, and Fusobacterium nucleatum are closely associated with periodontal diseases. We measured the relative population (bacterial levels) of these oral pathogens in subgingival tissues of patients at different stages of Korean chronic periodontal diseases. We divided the individuals into those with chronic gingivitis (G), moderate periodontitis (P1), severe periodontitis (P2), and normal individuals (N) (n = 20 for each group

Radiographic and clinical signs of periodontitis and associated bacterial species in a Swedish adolescent population.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis in adolescents has historically been rare in the Nordic countries but could be expected to increase due to changing demographics. The primary aim was to cross-sectionally examine the presence of radiographic bone loss in adolescents in Västerbotten County, Sweden. The secondary aim was to compare periodontal and microbial parameters, as well as demographic patterns, between controls without bone loss and cases with bone loss. METHODS: Adolescents born in 2001 who had a dental examination in 2016 (n = 1656) were screened for proximal bone loss using bitewing radiograp

Treatment resistance of rheumatoid arthritis relates to infection of periodontal pathogenic bacteria: a case-control cross-sectional study.

Recent studies have shown that periodontitis is associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and periodontal bacteria, such as Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) are involved in the pathogenesis of RA via citrullinated proteins. Smoking has also been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of RA; however, the extent of this involvement is still poorly understood. In addition, RA and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) are sometimes difficult to differentiate; however, the relationship between PMR and the factors from smoking and periodontal bacteria is unclear.

Microbiology of aggressive periodontitis.

For decades, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans has been considered the most likely etiologic agent in aggressive periodontitis. Implementation of DNA-based microbiologic methodologies has considerably improved our understanding of the composition of subgingival biofilms, and advanced open-ended molecular techniques even allow for genome mapping of the whole bacterial spectrum in a sample and characterization of both the cultivable and not-yet-cultivable microbiota associated with periodontal health and disease. Currently, A. actinomycetemcomitans is regarded as a minor component of the res

Specificity and levels of oral and systemic antibodies to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.

Salivary and gingival crevicular fluid antibodies and systemic antibodies were analysed for levels and specificity against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans components. The major reactivity of salivary and serum IgA1 and IgA2 antibodies to the periodontal pathogen A. actinomycetemcomitans was against bands between 14 and 83 kD for IgA1 and bands between 14 and 68 kD for IgA2 in Western blot. In addition to specific binding, there was also a hitherto unrecognized Fc-mediated binding of IgG antibodies to an A. actinomycetemcomitans component around 50 kD. Serum IgG antibodies to A. actinomyce

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans pneumonia with chest wall involvement and rib destruction.

There are four cases of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans pulmonary infections reported in the English literature prior to 1990. We report a case of A actinomycetemcomitans pulmonary infection with invasion of overlying soft tissue, rib, and sternum. This manifestation has not been previously reported. The clinical manifestation is similar to that of Actinomyces israelii, which may be misinterpreted as malignancy initially. The portal of entry of A actinomycetemcomitans may be via hematogenous spread or aspiration. The diagnosis depends on culture after prolonged incubation of the involved

A case of Escherichia coli native mitral valve endocarditis complicated by annular abscess and central retinal artery occlusion.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is most frequently caused by gram-positive organisms such as Staphylococci, Streptococci, and Enterococci. IE due to gram-negative organisms is uncommon and is most often associated with the HACEK group (Haemophilus, Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, and Kingella) of organisms. IE due to other gram-negative organisms such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) is rare and less is known about its natural pathology. Valvular abscesses due to E. coli IE have been described, however these are not usually reported in a native mitral valve. Here we describe the case of

A natural therapeutic approach for the treatment of periodontitis by MK615.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the tooth-supporting tissues. Gingival fibroblasts are the most abundant cells in periodontal tissues and they participate actively in the host inflammatory response to periodontal pathogens that is known to mediate local tissue destruction in periodontitis. The Japanese apricot, known as Ume in Japanese, has been a traditional Japanese medicine for centuries and is a familiar and commonly consumed food. The health benefits of Ume are widely recognized and have been confirmed in recent studies showing that MK615, an extract of compou
