Genotyping, pathogenicity, and immunogenicity of Avibacterium paragallinarum serovar B-1 isolates from the Americas.

The bacterium Avibacterium paragallinarum is the etiologic agent of infectious coryza of chickens. Among the nine Kume serovars currently recognized in this bacterium, serovar B-1 is a common serovar in the Americas. In the current study, serovar B-1 isolates from Ecuador (seven isolates), Mexico (seven isolates) and Panama (two isolates) were genotyped. In addition one Panamanian, one Ecuadorian, and two Mexican isolates were used in a vaccination-challenge trial in which the vaccine was based on the 2671 serovar B-1 reference strain. Genotyping by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consen

Invasion and maintenance of dengue virus type 2 and type 4 in the Americas.

Dengue virus type 4 (DENV-4) was first reported in the Americas in 1981, where it caused epidemics of dengue fever throughout the region. In the same year, the region's first epidemic of dengue hemorrhagic fever was reported, caused by an Asian strain of dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) that was distinct from the American subtype circulating previously. Despite the importance of these epidemics, little is known about the rates or determinants of viral spread among island and mainland populations or their directions of movement. We employed a Bayesian coalescent approach to investigate the transmis

Rational use of rubella vaccine for prevention of congenital rubella syndrome in the Americas.

Rubella is a viral disease with minor morbidity and few complication unless it is contracted by a pregnant woman. Rubella infection during the first trimester of pregnancy often leads to fetal death or severe congenital defects (congenital rubella syndrome, CRS). Rubella remains endemic in many countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. It has been estimated that 20,000 or more infants are perhaps born with CRS each year in Latin American and Caribbean countries. While the inclusion of rubella vaccination into routine childhood immunization will decrease rubella virus circulation among youn

[Strategies for the certification of the eradication of wild poliovirus transmission in the Americas].

Because it appears that the last case of poliomyelitis caused by transmission of indigenous wild poliovirus occurred 2 years ago on 23 August 1991 in Peru, the challenge for PAHO is to develop a methodology of certification that will convince the rest of the world that the eradication of poliomyelitis in the Americas has been achieved. To that end, the guidelines set forth here allow for a rigorous and standardized evaluation of the certification process by objective experts. As it was during the campaign to eradicate smallpox, epidemiologic surveillance (of acute flaccid paralysis [AFP] in th

Advancing Surgical Infection Science in the Americas: Highlights from the 2025 Panamerican Trauma Congress.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) and other infectious complications remain a major cause of preventable morbidity across Latin America. SSI prevalence in elective clean and clean-contaminated procedures in Latin America is substantial, and rates may increase further when post-discharge surveillance is incorporated. The XXXVII Panamerican Congress of Trauma, Critical Care, and Emergency Surgery, held in Cuenca, Ecuador, convened over 800 clinicians and researchers and featured a dedicated session focused on infectious complications in trauma and burn care. We present a focused narrative synthesi

Cardiovascular disease in the Americas: the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors.

This first article of the Series about Cardiovascular Disease in the Americas summarizes the epidemiology of CVD and its risk factors, and population-level strategies in place aimed at CVD prevention. While age-standardized CVD incidence and CV mortality rates have been decreasing across in the Americas since 1990, the annual number of CVD cases and related deaths have increased due to population growth and ageing. The burden of CVD is also slowly transitioning from high-income countries in North America to middle-income countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Trends in CV risk factor le

First documentation of Aspergillus welwitschiae in COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis in the Americas.

This study reports the first documented case of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) caused by Aspergillus welwitschiae in the Americas, which occurred in a rural area of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The case involves a 52-year-old woman with COVID-19, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, who was admitted following severe respiratory deterioration. Imaging tests revealed extensive pulmonary involvement, including nodular and cavitary lesions indicative of CAPA. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) analysis identified Aspergillus spp. using morphological and molecular techniques, and sequencing of

Need for Invasive Meningococcal Disease Prevention Through Vaccination for Young Children in the Americas.

Background: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition, resulting in life-long sequelae or death in up to 20% of cases. Most IMD cases are caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups (Men) A, B, C, W, X, and Y. The highest IMD incidence is among children < 5 years of age (YOA). We reviewed IMD epidemiology data and existing national immunization programs (NIP) in the Americas and identify unmet needs to decrease IMD burden in young children. Methods: Using national surveillance data and published literature from 2006 to 2024, we evaluated the

Molecular epidemiology of rubella during the pre- and post-elimination eras in the Americas.

Since the last case of indigenous rubella virus (RuV) was detected in 2009 in the Region of the Americas, sporadic rubella and congenital rubella cases have been confirmed, and subsequently, a low number of associated sequences have been reported. Fifty-one sequences of wild-type RuV, representing four genotypes (1E, 1G, 1J, and 2B), were reported from five countries, with confirmed sources of exposure for 46 cases. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the diversity of these viruses, showing no associations with sustained endemic transmission from previously endemic strains. Notably, 13 sequences we

Role of mutational reversions and fitness restoration in Zika virus spread to the Americas.

Zika virus (ZIKV) emerged from obscurity in 2013 to spread from Asia to the South Pacific and the Americas, where millions of people were infected, accompanied by severe disease including microcephaly following congenital infections. Phylogenetic studies have shown that ZIKV evolved in Africa and later spread to Asia, and that the Asian lineage is responsible for the recent epidemics in the South Pacific and Americas. However, the reasons for the sudden emergence of ZIKV remain enigmatic. Here we report evolutionary analyses that revealed four mutations, which occurred just before ZIKV introdu

Environmental and Social Change Drive the Explosive Emergence of Zika Virus in the Americas.

Since Zika virus (ZIKV) was detected in Brazil in 2015, it has spread explosively across the Americas and has been linked to increased incidence of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). In one year, it has infected over 500,000 people (suspected and confirmed cases) in 40 countries and territories in the Americas. Along with recent epidemics of dengue (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV), which are also transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes, the emergence of ZIKV suggests an ongoing intensification of environmental and social factors that have given rise to a new
