Leonardo da Vinci and dental anatomy.

Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance polymath, is still recognized today-above all for his oil paintings and mechanical inventions. His anatomical studies have attracted less attention, even though he devoted over 30 years of his life to them. This paper outlines Leonardo's career and research methods and focuses on the importance of his medical images for anatomical research and teaching. Following a short presentation of the state of (dental) medicine in the early Renaissance period, it offers a description of five of his cranial drawings that show the anatomy of the teeth, the nervous and vas

The Twist of the Achilles Tendon - Associations of Torsions in the Lower Extremity.

Achilles tendinopathy and rupture of the Achilles tendon (AT) are frequent pathologies. Even though they may be associated with the twisted morphology of the AT, quantitative data on the extent of the twist of the entire AT are not available. The aim of this study was to investigate the torsion of the AT based on its individual parts and to evaluate a possible correlation with the torsion of the long bones of the lower extremity. Forty embalmed lower extremities were included in this study. The lateral deviation of the AT and its torsional angle as well as the angles of the individual parts in

Retracing the observations and footsteps of Beauchêne fils: A blueprint for scientific research.

Throughout the years, scientific and personal research has led us on a historical journey to learn about the life of Beauchêne fils (Edme François Chauvot de Beauchêne), a French clinical anatomist, prosector, and surgeon responsible for introducing the disarticulated skull technique and the first citation of an intraneural cyst. This letter describes our research, travels, and conversations intended to uncover the fascinating history of Beauchêne fils and his family and our journey full of unexpected twists and turns. During a trip to Paris, we learned of a possible inspiration for the disart

The frequency of absence of palmaris longus in a South African population of mixed race.

The palmaris longus (PL) is a weak flexor of the wrist that may be harvested as a tendon graft and used in surgical procedures for reconstructive purposes. The PL is congenitally absent in 15% of the worldwide population. However, the frequency of absence varies considerably among different population groups, being as high as 63.9% in the Turkish population and as low as 3% in the black population in the Republic of Congo. In this study, South African persons of mixed race (n = 201) were assessed by two anatomists for the presence of the PL tendon using three clinical tests, namely the Traditi

Variability in the origin of the obturator artery.

INTRODUCTION: General surgeons dealing with laparoscopic herniorrhaphy should be aware of the aberrant obturator artery that crosses the superior pubic ramus and is susceptible to injuries during dissection of the Bogros space and mesh stapling onto Cooper's ligament. The obturator artery is usually described as a branch of the anterior division of the internal iliac artery, although variations have been reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted on 98 pelvic halves of embalmed cadavers, and the origin and course of the obturator artery were traced and noted. RESULTS: I

Fossa navicularis: anatomic variation at the skull base.

The fossa navicularis is a relatively rare anatomic variation of the skull base. Awareness of its existence will avoid misinterpretations of radiological images and unnecessary investigations. This study describes the appearance of the fossa navicularis, and investigates its incidence and whether it is related to pathology at the basiocciput. We studied 492 dry human skulls and 525 computer tomography (CT) images of patients. Dry skulls showing a fossa navicularis were investigated by CT scan, whereas patients identified as having a fossa navicularis were further examined with magnetic resonan

The diaphragm: two physiological muscles in one.

To the respiratory physiologist or anatomist the diaphragm muscle is of course the prime mover of tidal air. However, gastrointestinal physiologists are becoming increasingly aware of the value of this muscle in helping to stop gastric contents from refluxing into the oesophagus. The diaphragm should be viewed as two distinct muscles, crural and costal, which act in synchrony throughout respiration. However, the activities of these two muscular regions can diverge during certain events such as swallowing and emesis. In addition, transient crural muscle relaxations herald the onset of spontaneo

Wirsung and Santorini: the men behind the ducts.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, several important discoveries were accomplished by anatomists whose contribution has enlightened the most important anatomic structures of the pancreas. Following the earliest discoveries, researchers of several medical specialities further investigated the ductal pancreatic system. The accessory pancreatic duct with its minor papilla, the main pancreatic duct and the papilla major along with the confluence of the main pancreatic duct with the bile duct and pancreas divisum, have been the objects of interest of several personalities of the medical history. [Medicine and enlightenment in New Spain].

Fundamental ideas of the cultural movement of Enlightenment were drawn up and encouraged in England by John Locke and introduced into continental Europe by Voltaire. The essence of this movement was defined by I. Kant in 1784. These new ideas were projected into the field of medicine initially with the systematization of anatomical studies by Winslow, Vicq d' Azyr and Sénac in France, by S. Th. Sömmerring and von Haller in Germany, and by Paolo Mascagni and other anatomists in Italy. This movement settled in Spain toward the middle of the XVIII century, due to Father Feijóo and his pupils such

Reduced iodine solution as an objective indicator of tissue perfusion during embalming in cadavers.

Background Anatomists rely on subjective cadaveric signs such as frothy ooze or abdominal fullness to mark the completion of tissue perfusion during embalming. We evaluated the use of a reduced iodide solution, coated over certain distinct sites on cadavers, to mark the completion of formalin perfusion to stop embalming at the right time. Methods In a comparative study, reduced iodide was coated over the nail plates of the great toes and onto sticks inserted into the pinnae prior to the start of embalming of 6 cadavers while another set of 6 cadavers underwent standard embalming. Rethinking brachycephaly: Anatomical implications and health considerations in lagomorphs.

Brachycephaly in domestic rabbits is increasingly perceived by welfare organizations as associated with significant health complications, particularly oral pathologies. Despite this perception, comparative anatomical research into rabbit brachycephaly is limited compared to that of dogs and cats, compelling an in-depth examination of its health implications. This review aims to fill notable knowledge gaps by summarizing existing literature on the prevalence of health disorders associated with the morphological implications of brachycephalic rabbit breeds, particularly dental diseases. Revisiting the metacarpophalangeal joint: comparison of ultrasound tissue patterns with its anatomical, histological, and immunohistochemical features.

This study aimed to identify the structures and tissues of the dorsal aspect of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) using ultrasound, with gross anatomy as a comparator and learning source. In addition, the composition of several MCPJ tissues was investigated by histology and immunohistochemistry. The study comprised 3 steps. First, 4 rheumatologist ultrasonographers identified on B-mode imaging the tissue patterns of the structures in the dorsal aspect of the MCPJ in fresh-frozen cadaveric hands. In the second step, 2 anatomists performed dissections on fresh-frozen and embalmed cadaveric han

Rice bodies in a shoulder bursa: a cadaveric and histologic case report.

INTRODUCTION: The subacromial/subdeltoid bursa can develop inflammation and effusion related to autoimmune, infectious, and musculoskeletal disorders. Rice bodies, or loose bodies within bursa, have been described as an uncommon complication of bursitis and have been the subject of case studies over a number of years. However, they have not been described in anatomical or physical therapy-related literature. METHODS: A donor body dissected for a physical therapy anatomy course was found to have an enlarged subacromial/subdeltoid bursa. This bursa, along with the biceps brachii tendon sheath,

Variable Anatomy of the Middle Cerebral Artery from Its Origin to the Edge of the Sylvian Fissure: A Direct Fresh Brain Study.

The middle cerebral artery (MCA) is a major artery supplying blood to the brain and a common site of surgically treatable intracranial aneurysms. The MCA has anatomic variations that may have clinical significance. In order to investigate and document the extent of such variations, the MCA in 100 fresh brain hemispheres from 50 deceased patients, obtained from the Police Surgeon Office, Yangon General Hospital, Myanmar, was dissected and examined. Double MCA was observed in 2% of specimens. The termination patterns were bifurcation (72%), trifurcation (16%), and primary trunk (12%); early bifu

Diagnostic approach to the anterior/prevascular mediastinum for radiologists.

The mediastinum contains vital vascular and nonvascular organs and other structures, and a wide variety of neoplasms and other abnormalities may originate from this anatomic region of the chest. Division of the mediastinum into distinct compartments helps narrow the differential diagnosis of mediastinal abnormalities detected on imaging studies, assists the planning of biopsy and surgical procedures, and facilitates communication between healthcare providers in the multidisciplinary setting. Numerous different models have been developed and used by radiologists, surgeons, and anatomists. Recen

SMAS Fusion Zones Determine the Subfascial and Subcutaneous Anatomy of the Human Face: Fascial Spaces, Fat Compartments, and Models of Facial Aging.

BACKGROUND: Fusion zones between superficial fascia and deep fascia have been recognized by surgical anatomists since 1938. Anatomical dissection performed by the author suggested that additional superficial fascia fusion zones exist. OBJECTIVES: A study was performed to evaluate and define fusion zones between the superficial and the deep fascia. METHODS: Dissection of fresh and minimally preserved cadavers was performed using the accepted technique for defining anatomic spaces: dye injection combined with cross-sectional anatomical dissection. RESULTS: This study identified bilaminar memb

Ablation of the epithelial-specific splicing factor Esrp1 results in ureteric branching defects and reduced nephron number.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in ureteric bud (UB) branching morphogenesis lead to congenital anomalies of the kidney and reduced nephron numbers associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension. Previous studies showed that the epithelial fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (Fgfr2) IIIb splice variant supports ureteric morphogenesis in response to ligands from the metanephric mesenchyme during renal organogenesis. The epithelial-specific splicing regulator Esrp1 is required for expression of Fgfr2-IIIb and other epithelial-specific splice variants. Our objective was to determine whet

Structure and function of the mammalian middle ear. II: Inferring function from structure.

Anatomists and zoologists who study middle ear morphology are often interested to know what the structure of an ear can reveal about the auditory acuity and hearing range of the animal in question. This paper represents an introduction to middle ear function targetted towards biological scientists with little experience in the field of auditory acoustics. Simple models of impedance matching are first described, based on the familiar concepts of the area and lever ratios of the middle ear. However, using the Mongolian gerbil Meriones unguiculatus as a test case, it is shown that the predictions
