Unilateral multiple facial angiofibromas: a case report with brief review of literature.

Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) is an autosomal dominant hereditary condition with many varied forms of clinical presentation. The most frequent cutaneous findings in TSC include multiple angiofibromas, hypopigmented macules, periungual fibromas, and shagreen patch. Rarely, unilateral multiple facial angiofibromas have been reported. We report a case of unilateral multiple facial angiofibromas without any other manifestations of TSC. Although rare, unilateral multiple facial angiofibromas may be a mosaic form of TSC.

Facial angiofibromas treated with topical rapamycin: an excellent choice with fast response.

Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is the second most common genodermatosis in our country and one of its main characteristics is the presence of facial angiofibromas. These benign tumors can be really bothersome for some patients and there is not a gold-standard treatment. Laser therapy has been used with good responses but it is a painful option and recurrence is guaranteed. TS develops as a result of a mutation of one of two genes, TSC1 or TSC2, which encode for hamartin and tuberin, respectively. TSC1 and TSC2 are tumor suppressors that inhibit mTOR, which if mutated results in mTOR activation, leadi

Perioperative problems and treatment of a teenager with a juvenile angiofibroma refusing blood transfusion.

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile angiofibroma is a benign, non-encapsulated neoplasm, consisting of vascular and connective tissue. Its main feature is a local malignancy. In its clinical course it destroys adjoining structures, without metastasizing. It appears rarely, and is mainly found in boys at puberty. Among theories about the aetiology of juvenile angiofibroma, we must consider a haematoma-like lesion, an angioma with an extended fibrous component, or type of inflammatory allergic polyp. In the development of the lesion the participation of hormonal disorders on the pituitary gland-gonad axis is a

Unilateral eyelid angiofibroma with complete blepharoptosis as the presenting sign of tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis is a multisystem autosomal-dominant disease characterized by hamartomatous growths in the brain, skin, kidneys, eyes, and heart, but it may affect almost any organ. Retinal hamartomas are 1 of the major diagnostic criteria for tuberous sclerosis and occur in approximately 50% of patients. Nonretinal findings include angiofibromas of the eyelid, strabismus, and pseudo-colobomas of the lens and iris. We report a case of a newborn with congenital eyelid angiofibroma mimicking complete congenital blepharoptosis that was revealed by central nervous system imaging to be part of th

Multiple facial angiofibromas: a cutaneous manifestation of Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is an uncommon autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by a triad of skin tumors--fibrofolliculomas, trichodiscomas, and acrochordons--together with an increased risk of renal tumors and spontaneous pneumothoraces. This report describes multiple facial angiofibromas as the predominant initial manifestation of BHDS. The patient had a total of 41 facial papules removed via shave excision, initially for diagnostic and then for therapeutic purposes; histologic evaluation revealed diagnostic features of angiofibroma in 39 lesions and fibrofolliculoma in only 2

Juvenile angiofibromas: changing surgical concept over the last 20 years.

OBJECTIVES: Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare tumor. Several surgical approaches have been established, including transpalatal, lateral rhinotomy, craniofacial, and midface degloving procedures. More recently, less invasive endonasal approaches have been used. In a retrospective study, we analyzed the outcome of surgical treatment for angiofibroma to determine whether an endonasal approach was as effective as other, more invasive techniques for removing the tumors. METHODS: Thirty patients with histologically confirmed angiofibromas were treated by surgical removal at two institutions dur

Huge lobulated juvenile angiofibroma: sites of extension and selection of procedures for management.

OBJECTIVE: To review and report our experiences in the management of huge lobulated juvenile angiofibroma (JNA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1980 to 2001, 11 cases were diagnosed and treated in our department. Their clinical manifestations and the results of treatment were analyzed and evaluated, with particular attention to the anatomic sites of extension and the selection of choices for appropriate treatment. RESULTS: Owing to extranasopharyngeal extension, 6 to 12 different anatomic sites were occupied by each tumour, including the cheek (9 tumours) and middle cranial fossa (3 tumours). T

The use of intensity modulated radiotherapy for the treatment of extensive and recurrent juvenile angiofibroma.

These case series are presented to describe the application and advantages of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for the treatment of extensive and/or recurrent juvenile angiofibroma. Two patients were diagnosed with recurrence at 11 and 13 months postoperatively, and one was surgically unresectable. The affected areas included the base of skull, cavernous sinus, pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa, posterior orbit and nasopharynx. Highly conformal IMRT was delivered with limited radiation doses to the optic nerves, optic chiasm, brainstem, brain, spinal cord, lens, retina, mandibl

[Multiple and unilateral angiofibromas of the face: forme fruste of Bourneville tuberous sclerosis].

BACKGROUND: Multiple facial angiofibromas are considered a characteristic and pathognomonic feature of tuberous sclerosis. In contrast, the observation of localized multiple angiofibromas limited to one side of the face is a uncommon. OBSERVATIONS: We cared for two patients with multiple clustered unilateral angiofibromas (although one patient also presented a few angiofibromas on the other side) without other features associated with the sclerosis tuberous complex. DISCUSSION: The possibility that these patients presented an independent disorder or a minor form of tuberous sclerosis is disc

Angiofibromas in tuberous sclerosis: comparison of treatment by carbon dioxide and argon laser.

Multiple angiofibromas (adenoma sebaceum) of the nose in a dark-complexioned patient with tuberous sclerosis were treated with laser surgery. One side of the nose was treated with the argon laser. The other side of the nose was treated with the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. The CO2 laser produced superior cosmetic results with more complete removal of cutaneous lesions.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma presenting as adult osteomalacia: case report and review of the literature.

Unexplained osteomalacia may be the result of various neoplasma including ENT tumors. The mechanism of this oncogenic osteomalacia is uncertain, but it may result from a tumor-induced alteration in vitamin-D metabolism or from a direct phosphaturic action of a tumor product. Thorough ENT evaluation of patients presenting with unexplained osteomalacia is indicated, as successful tumor excision can lead to cure.

[Nervous system lesions in juvenile angiofibromas of the base of the skull with intracranial spread].

The authors examined the nervous system in 12 patients with intracranial dissemination of an adolescent angiofibroma of the brain basis. It was possible to depict signs of a lesion of some cranial nerves and the brain stem as well as x-ray confirmation of a bone destruction in the brain basis. The found changes were connected with the direct influence of the angiofibroma on the above mentioned structures.

A rare case of cellular angiofibroma with sarcomatous transformation occurred in the popliteal fossa.

BACKGROUND: Cellular angiofibroma (CAF) represents a rare, benign mesenchymal neoplasm. Histologically, it is characterized by a spindle-cell component closely resembling spindle-cell lipoma and an abundance of thick-walled blood vessels. This tumor predominantly arising in the vulvovaginal region of females and the inguinoscrotal region of males. It is commonly associated with a specific genetic deletion of the RB1 gene, which is mapped to the 13q14 locus on chromosome 13. Although rare, cases of CAF demonstrating morphological atypia or undergoing sarcomatous transformation (CAS) have been r

Treatment of a nasal angiofibroma in a cat using stereotactic body radiation therapy.

A 14-year-old cat presented with right-sided epistaxis, right facial swelling, hyporexia, and sneezing. A right nasal mass was diagnosed based on dental radiography and computed tomography (CT), and nasal angiofibroma was diagnosed based on histopathology. Treatment consisted of stereotactic body radiation therapy in three consecutive daily doses. Self-limiting grade 3 oral mucositis developed which resolved within 6 weeks. Recheck CT 169 days after treatment confirmed a partial response by RECIST(1) based on digital CT measurements . Disease progression was confirmed on CT 642 days after trea

Surgical excision of giant vulvar angiofibroma: A case report and a review of literature.

RATIONALE: Cellular angiofibroma (CA) is a rare tumor of the soft tissue classified as a benign fibroblastic/myofibroblastic tumor. Considering this, the literature regarding CA mainly, but not exclusively, comprises single case reports and case series. Here, we report a case of giant CA of the vulva with comprehensive literature review. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of a massive vulvar CA arising in 53-year-old woman with no notable medical or surgical history. The mass has grown considerably over time, causing pain and difficult urination, defecation, and movement. The patient had nor
