The frequency selectivity of the 500 HZ frequency following response.

In order to evaluate the frequency selectivity of the 500 Hz FFR we applied narrow-band masking at closely spaced center frequencies in the range 0.25 to 4 kHZ. The results show clearly that it is the apical part of the cochlea that generates the 500 Hz FFR, but the area of the basilar membrane that contributes is rather broad. It was evident that some of the masking effect that was observed in the Vertex-derived response stemmed from as yet obsure brain stem mechanisms. Examination of 3 patients with selected types of hearing impairment confirmed the masking results. When there is a low frequ

Auditory processing disorders: can they be treated?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In recent years, parents and schools have spent millions of pounds and dollars on commercial programs that claim to treat children's developmental disorders by training their auditory processing. Here I test the truth of this claim using evidence from recent auditory training studies done with children with developmental disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Six studies were published in 2007 and 2008 that trained children with developmental disorders on an auditory training program that included nonspeech sounds or simple speech sounds. The results suggest that nonspeech training an

[(Central) Auditory Processing Disorders in 8 - 10-year-old children: which tests distinguish between normal and impaired children?].

BACKGROUND: Eclectic test combinations are usually applied for diagnosing (Central) Auditory Processing Disorders (C)APD in school-aged children. METHODS: Children with suspected APD were examined with a combination of 12 audiological and psychometric tests in order to allow the proper allocation to either the APD-group or to the Non-APD-group. PATIENTS: Forty-six 8-10-year-old children diagnosed with auditory-specific perceptual deficits [clinical group (C)APD; average age 9;2 years; SD 0;7 years] were compared to 39 normally developed children of the same age span with no evidence of speci

Sound stimulus qualities and severe auditory neglect.

We report the case of a patient who developed severe left auditory neglect following a cerebral vascular accident with infarction of areas in the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes of the right hemisphere. The severity of neglect was documented using pure tones, speech, and environmental stimuli, administered binaurally and dichotically. Acuity examination and unilateral presentation of stimuli allowed exclusion of primary hearing deficit. A dichotic word test was used to evaluate the effects of implicit and explicit cuing. Contrary to our expectations, implicit semantic cues did not attenu

Same or Different: The Overlap Between Children With Auditory Processing Disorders and Children With Other Developmental Disorders: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Children diagnosed with auditory processing disorders (APD) experience difficulties in auditory functioning and with memory, attention, language, and reading tasks. However, it is not clear whether the behavioral characteristics of these children are distinctive from the behavioral characteristics of children diagnosed with a different developmental disorder, such as specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disorder (LD), or autism spectrum disorder. This study describes the performance of children diagnosed with APD, S

Perceptual aspects of cluttered speech.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this descriptive investigation was to explore perceptual judgments of speech naturalness, compared to judgments of articulation, language, disfluency, and speaking rate, in the speech of two youths who differed in cluttering severity. Two groups of listeners, 48 from New York and 48 from West Virginia, judged 93 speaking samples on 9-point scales of two cluttering speakers tape recorded in an earlier study [St. Louis, K. Improvement of symptoms in children with autism by TOMATIS training: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that is marked by deficits in social interaction, difficulty expressing oneself, lack of enthusiasm, and stereotypical conduct. The TOMATIS training method is an effective music therapy for children with ASD for its individually developed programs to improve behavioral deficits. METHODS: The research employed both longitudinal and crosssectional designs. RESULTS: In the cross-sectional study, the experimental group showed significant improvement in symptoms after TOMATIS training compared to the control group of childre

Are cochlear implant patients suffering from perceptual dissonance?

Cochlear implants provide functional hearing to the majority of recipients and have gained widespread acceptance clinically, but the range of performance remains great and largely unexplained. Designs for implanted electrodes and electronics have converged, whereas novel speech processing strategies have proliferated. For each patient, the fitting audiologist must sort empirically through options that produce large but idiosyncratic differences in both objective performance and subjective preference. This review and analysis suggests that the place-pitch and rate-pitch theories on which cochle

Binaural interaction component of the auditory brainstem response in children with autism spectrum disorder.

INTRODUCTION: There is ample evidence that auditory dysfunction is a common feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Binaural interaction component (BIC) manifests binaural interaction and is valid and proven response which reflects ongoing binaural processing. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the differences in binaural interaction component of auditory brainstem response (ABR-BIC) between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and normal peers and to correlate between ABR-BIC amplitudes and the acquired communication skills in ASD children. METHODS: ASD was diagnosed according to the cri

Macrophages Promote Repair of Inner Hair Cell Ribbon Synapses following Noise-Induced Cochlear Synaptopathy.

Resident cochlear macrophages rapidly migrate into the inner hair cell synaptic region and directly contact the damaged synaptic connections after noise-induced synaptopathy. Eventually, such damaged synapses are spontaneously repaired, but the precise role of macrophages in synaptic degeneration and repair remains unknown. To address this, cochlear macrophages were eliminated using colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) inhibitor, PLX5622. Sustained treatment with PLX5622 in CX3CR1 GFP/+ mice of both sexes led to robust elimination of resident macrophages (∼94%) without significant adve

Reversing pathological neural activity using targeted plasticity.

Brain changes in response to nerve damage or cochlear trauma can generate pathological neural activity that is believed to be responsible for many types of chronic pain and tinnitus. Several studies have reported that the severity of chronic pain and tinnitus is correlated with the degree of map reorganization in somatosensory and auditory cortex, respectively. Direct electrical or transcranial magnetic stimulation of sensory cortex can temporarily disrupt these phantom sensations. However, there is as yet no direct evidence for a causal role of plasticity in the generation of pain or tinnitus
