The Viennese neurologist Richard Stern and the discrimination and persecution of Jewish physicians in Austria and Slovakia.

This article reconstructs the life and career of the Viennese neurologist and neuropathologist Richard Stern (1878-1942) and situates his trajectory within the longue durée of antisemitic discrimination against Jewish physicians in Austria. Drawing on archival sources and contemporary scientific publications, it examines Stern's academic training in the largely forgotten tradition of Lothar Frankl-Hochwart (1862-1914), his clinical and scientific work, and his professional activities in social insurance medicine. The study emphasizes that the exclusion of Jewish physicians in Austria did not b

Epidemiological characteristics and impact of sepsis on survival after osteoporotic pelvic fracture in Austria.

We performed a retrospective nationwide register-based cohort study which included all in-hospital patients aged ≥ 50 with pelvic fracture (PF) between 2010 and 2018 in Austria. We identified patients who were hospitalized with sepsis within 180 days following a PF event. Aetiology of sepsis was divided by unspecified, gram positive, gram negative and other. Among 59,081 patients hospitalized with PF between 2010 and 2018 we identified 619 (1.05%) patients who were hospitalized with sepsis within 180 days following PF. The cumulative incidence risk of sepsis within 180 days after PF was signif

The Prevalence of Genital Mycoplasmas and Coinfection with Trichomonas vaginalis in Female Patients in Vienna, Austria.

Trichomonas vaginalis causes trichomoniasis, the most recurrent sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. Genital mycoplasmas, not considered STI agents, are frequently isolated from the female genital tract. A symbiosis between Mycoplasma species and T. vaginalis has been described. The aim of this study was to conduct molecular-based analyses of vaginal specimens, thus assessing the prevalence of non-STI Mycoplasma infections. In total, 582 samples from female patients and an additional 20 T. vaginalis isolates were analyzed by PCR using Mycoplasma specific 16S rRNA primers, and the ob

New Emergence of the Novel Pestivirus Linda Virus in a Pig Farm in Carinthia, Austria.

Linda virus (LindaV) was first identified in a pig farm in Styria, Austria in 2015 and associated with congenital tremor (CT) type A-II in newborn piglets. Since then, only one more LindaV affected farm was retrospectively discovered 10 km away from the initially affected farm. Here, we report the recent outbreak of a novel LindaV strain in a farrow-to-finish farm in the federal state Carinthia, Austria. No connection between this farm and the previously affected farms could be discovered. The outbreak was characterized by severe CT cases in several litters and high preweaning mortality. A her

Genetic Diversity of Puumala orthohantavirus in Rodents and Human Patients in Austria, 2012-2019.

Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) has a wide distribution throughout Europe. Distinctive temporal patterns of spillover into the human population are related to population dynamics of the reservoir host, the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). As the rodent host is tied to specific habitats with small individual ranges, PUUV genetic diversity is also highly correlated with geographic distance. Using sequenced portions of viral S and M segments, we determined whether geographic clusters were supported. Human cases of PUUV infections are concentrated in southeastern Austria. We detected four disti

Delayed referral despite appropriate knowledge in cryptorchidism as a cause of delayed orchidopexies in Austria.

AIM: Guidelines recommend early orchidopexy in cryptorchidism to decrease the risk of infertility and tumor formation. We aimed to asses if a delayed initial presentation for cryptorchidism was due to unawareness of these guidelines or for any other reasons. METHODS: A short questionnaire exploring timing and referral habits when assessing children with cryptorchidism was sent by email to all registered pediatricians in Austria. Comparatively, a chart review of performed orchidopexies was performed at our institution. RESULTS: Of 369 registered pediatricians, 102 (27.6%) returned valid quest

[Analysis of the efficiency of tick-borne encephalitis vaccination in the population in the natural foci of Austria].

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), the preventive measure against which is vaccination, is a disease caused by flavivirus (TBE virus). The infection is common in many European countries and in much of Central and Eastern Asia. Formaline-killed whole-virion high-purified vaccine inactivated is widely used for immunization of the population in Europe; however, the coverage of the population with vaccination greatly differs in the country where the natural foci of TBE are recorded. The exception is Austria where 88% of the population has been at least vaccinated against TBE and 58% has been regularly
