Spatial clustering and route-based analysis of DUI incidents for enhancing traffic enforcement deployment.

OBJECTIVE: Driving under the influence (DUI) remains a persistent threat to public safety, especially in dense urban areas where alcohol use and vehicle traffic often intersect. This study develops one of the first integrated frameworks that link DUI origins, travel patterns, crash locations, and enforcement points to inform adaptive, route-based enforcement strategies. METHODS: Using 17,075 DUI incidents in Seoul from 2021-2022, the study combines network-based shortest-path estimation and logistic regression to model offender movement, assuming the Place of Last Drink (POLD) as the trip ori

Evaluating the Computerized Assessment and Referral System (CARS) Screener: Sensitivity and Specificity as a Screening Tool for Mental Health Disorders among DUI Offenders.

Background/Purpose: A growing body of evidence suggests that people who are arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol are more likely to screen positive for psychiatric disorders than the general population. Additionally, psychiatric comorbidity has been shown to increase vulnerability to criminal re-offense. However, DUI programs face many barriers to screening for psychiatric disorders. This paper evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of a screening tool developed for these programs, the Computerized Assessment and Referral System (CARS) Screener. Methods: We used data fr

Prioritizing Where to Attend: CoAT-Based Driving Attention Guidance With Risk-Aware Modeling.

Accurately identifying priority attention regions in complex driving scenarios is critical yet challenging, due to the coupling of heterogeneous factors such as motion, structured semantics, and human experience. However, existing methods often isolate these factors without systematically modeling comprehensive reasoning based on their relations, and rely on supervision from biased gaze data or indiscriminate semantic overlays, failing to highlight truly critical regions. To address these limitations, we propose the Driving Attention Guidance Network (DAG-Net) based on a specially designed Cha

Smart road safety for cyclists development & assessment of C-ITS emergency braking.

INTRODUCTION: Urban intersections with restricted visibility are among the most hazardous conditions for interactions between cyclists and vehicles, as delayed mutual perception and limited maneuvering margins significantly increase the risk of severe collisions. METHOD: This study addresses these challenges by developing an integrated simulation framework that combines a digital model of real intersections with a micro-simulation model calibrated using cyclist and driver field-collected trajectories. The SUMo simulation framework includes Python APIs that reproduce reciprocal visual percepti

Do Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) improve or worsen road safety? Assessing crash impacts in San Francisco.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last decade, Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) have emerged as a popular mobility option. Yet past research has not conclusively established the linkage between their service operations and road crash risk. Our analysis compares road crash outcomes in San Francisco between 2010, when TNCs were negligible, and 2016, when they comprised 15% of vehicle trips within San Francisco. METHOD: We estimated a fixed-effects Poisson regression model for four crash outcomes, controlling for the change in background traffic, speed, and time-invariant factors including roadway g

Modeling dilemma zone at urban signalized intersections using crowdsourced trajectory data.

The stop/go dilemma drivers face at the yellow onset is highly correlated with the potential risks of rear-end collisions and red-light running crashes. This dilemma has been physically characterized using the Type I and Type II definitions. Unlike the Type II definition with several limitations, the Type I counterpart incorporates the dynamics of driver-vehicle attributes to quantify the dilemma zone accurately but requires high-quality vehicle trajectory data. Such trajectory data in existing studies are extracted from field-setup video cameras or radar, undergoing manual trajectory reductio

May reducing driving-related phobia recover developmental topographical disorientation? A case report.

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) is more common than expected in healthy populations and can cause psychological disorders, leading to feelings of frustration and failure due to poor navigation. Due to the strict relation and the frequent association between DTD and psychological disorders, it is crucial to understand the impact of spatial anxiety and specific phobias, such as driving-related fear (DRF), on one's ability to autonomously navigate in the environment. Here, we report the case of a girl with DTD and DRF who struggled to learn driving routes due to her phobia. Her s

Exploring the impact of right-turn safety measures on E-bike-heavy vehicle conflicts at signalized intersections.

A major safety hazard for e-bike riders crossing an intersection is encountering heavy vehicles turning right in the same direction, which often results in severe casualties. Recently, some cities in China have implemented right-turn safety improvement treatments (i.e., right-turn yielding rules and right-turn warning facilities) at intersections to reduce the occurrence of such accidents. However, the risk perception and behavior of e-bike riders and heavy vehicle drivers dynamically change during the right-turn interaction process, and the safety effects of different right-turn safety measur

Collision-avoidance lane change control method for enhancing safety for connected vehicle platoon in mixed traffic environment.

In a mixed traffic environment, the connected vehicle platoon cannot communicate and collaborate with the surrounding vehicles. In this case, there is a high risk of collision in large vehicle platoon's lane change scenario where the non-connected surrounding vehicle occupies the target lane-changing space of the platoon. This study proposes a collision-avoidance lane change control method for a connected bus platoon to elude the non-connected vehicle in the target lane for completing lane change in the mixed traffic environment safely. A platoon vehicle sensor system with low-cost and low dat

[Testing for visual deficits by the police among road users in Germany].

BACKGROUND: The Professional Association of Ophthalmologists (BVA) estimates that at least 100,000s of traffic accidents with 10,000s of injuries and fatalities are caused by known and unknown visual disorders on German roads every year. Until now, however, the police have not had the opportunity to check for potential visual disorders on the spot in cases of conspicuous driving. In a pilot project of the police with the Eye Hospital of the Hannover Medical School (MHH), the aim was for the first time to extend the existing tests of the police by adapted "car-side" vision tests. Learning about crash causation from countermeasure evaluation: The example of the Queensland minimum passing distance rule.

Close passes by motor vehicles endanger both the safety and comfort of bicycle riders. Governments in many countries have introduced laws requiring drivers to maintain at least a minimum distance between their vehicle and the cyclist they are passing, despite relatively poor understanding of the causes of bicycle overtaking crashes at the time. Queensland was the first state in Australia to introduce such a law, with a two-year trial commencing in April 2014. The data collected during the evaluation of the trial were later analysed to answer two main questions: "Under what circumstances do clo

Study protocol for "In-vehicle sensors to detect changes in cognition of older drivers".

BACKGROUND: Driving is a complex behavior that may be affected by early changes in the cognition of older individuals. Early changes in driving behavior may include driving more slowly, making fewer and shorter trips, and errors related to inadequate anticipation of situations. Sensor systems installed in older drivers' vehicles may detect these changes and may generate early warnings of possible changes in cognition. METHOD: A naturalistic longitudinal design is employed to obtain continuous information on driving behavior that will be compared with the results of extensive cognitive testing

Printed and Flexible ECG Electrodes Attached to the Steering Wheel for Continuous Health Monitoring during Driving.

Continuous health monitoring in a vehicle enables the earlier detection of symptoms of cardiovascular diseases. In this work, we designed flexible and thin electrodes made of polyurethane for long-term electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring while driving. We determined the time for reliable ECG recording to evaluate the effectiveness of the electrodes. We recorded data from 19 subjects under four scenarios: rest, city, highway, and rural. The recording time was five min for rest and 15 min for the other scenarios. The total recording (950 min) is publicly available under a CC BY-ND 4.0 license. We

EEG-based evaluation of motion sickness and reducing sensory conflict in a simulated autonomous driving environment.

Autonomous driving offers significant potential for changes in the automotive industry. However, sensory conflict during autonomous driving can lead to motion sickness. Quantitative evaluation and effective preventions to predict and reduce motion sickness are needed. The goal of this study is to verify the objective indicator of motion sickness level based on encephalography (EEG) that we proposed before and investigate the influence of attenuating sensory conflict on motion sickness. A 6-degree of freedom (DOF) driving simulator platform was used to provide an autonomous driving environment

Validation of a moving base driving simulator for motion sickness research.

Increasing levels of vehicle automation are envisioned to allow drivers to engage in other activities but are also likely to increase the incidence of Carsickness or Motion Sickness (MS). Ideally, MS is studied in a safe and controlled environment, such as a driving simulator. However, only few studies address the suitability of driving simulators to assess MS. In this study, we validate a moving base driving simulator for MS research by comparing the symptoms and time course of MS between a real-road driving scenario and a rendition of this scenario in a driving simulator, using a within-subj

I think I'm sleepy, therefore I am - Awareness of sleepiness while driving: A systematic review.

Driver drowsiness contributes to 10-20% of motor vehicle crashes. To reduce crash risk, ideally drivers would be aware of the drowsy state and cease driving. The extent to which drivers can accurately identify sleepiness remains under much debate. We systematically examined whether individuals are aware of sleepiness while driving, and whether this accurately reflects driving impairment, using meta-analyses and narrative review. Within this scope, there is high variability in measures of subjective sleepiness, driving performance and physiologically-derived drowsiness, and statistical analyses

Feasibility of a Neural Network-Based Virtual Sensor for Vehicle Unsprung Mass Relative Velocity Estimation.

With the automotive industry moving towards automated driving, sensing is increasingly important in enabling technology. The virtual sensors allow data fusion from various vehicle sensors and provide a prediction for measurement that is hard or too expensive to measure in another way or in the case of demand on continuous detection. In this paper, virtual sensing is discussed for the case of vehicle suspension control, where information about the relative velocity of the unsprung mass for each vehicle corner is required. The corresponding goal can be identified as a regression task with multi-

Influence of personality on acute smoked cannabis effects on simulated driving.

A recent study of the impact of smoked cannabis on simulated driver behavior demonstrated a reduction in mean speed after smoked cannabis. Previous research identified an association between personality and individual differences and acute drug effects. The present study examined the impact of personality on the reduction in mean speed after smoking cannabis under single- and dual-task driving conditions originally reported by Brands et al. (2019). Sixty-one participants randomly assigned to the active drug condition completed a battery of self-report questionnaires measuring various personali
