Neem leaf glycoprotein reverses tumor-induced and age-associated thymic involution to maintain peripheral CD8+ T cell pool.

Aim: As tumor causes atrophy in the thymus to target effector-T cells, this study is aimed to decipher the efficacy of neem leaf glycoprotein (NLGP) in tumor- and age-associated thymic atrophy. Materials & methods: Different thymus parameters were studied using flow cytometry, reverse transcriptase PCR and immunocyto-/histochemistry in murine melanoma and sarcoma models. Results: Longitudinal NLGP therapy in tumor hosts show tumor-reduction along with significant normalization of thymic alterations. NLGP downregulates intrathymic IL-10, which eventually promotes Notch1 to rescue blockade in CD

The acaricidal efficacy of aqueous neem extract and ivermectin against Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi in experimentally infested rabbits.

Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi is one of the most important veterinary ectoparasites in rabbits and results in considerable loss of weight, productivity, and wool quality. The acaricidal activity of aqueous leaf extract of neem (CAN) and ivermectin (IVR) were evaluated in vitro and in vivo against S. scabiei var. cuniculi. Rabbits were classified into four groups (ten rabbits each). The first group (group 1) was designated as the negative control group. Each rabbit of the other groups was experimentally infested with 50 mites. One month post-infestation, the second group (group 2) was not tre

Gedunin, a natural tetranortriterpenoid, modulates T lymphocyte responses and ameliorates allergic inflammation.

T lymphocytes are critical cells involved in allergy. Here, we report that the natural tetranortriterpenoid gedunin impaired allergic responses primarily by modulating T lymphocyte functions. The intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of gedunin inhibited pleural leukocyte accumulation triggered by intra-pleural (i.pl.) challenge with ovalbumin (OVA) in previously sensitized C57BL/6 mice; this inhibition was primarily due to the impairment of eosinophil and T lymphocyte influx. Likewise, i.pl. pre-treatment with gedunin inhibited eosinophil and T lymphocyte migration into mouse lungs 24 h after

Phytochemical mediated green synthesis of molybdenum-based nanoparticles for enhancing seedling vigour and early establishment of greengram (Vigna radiata L.).

BACKGROUND: Sustainable micronutrient management is vital for early crop establishment in legumes, as conventional molybdenum fertilizers often exhibit low bioavailability during early growth stages. In legumes, molybdenum plays an important role in nitrogen fixation and root nodule functioning through nitrogenase and nitrate reductase enzymes. Therefore, phytochemical-mediated molybdenum-based nanoparticles were synthesized and evaluated as a seed treatment for improving seedling vigour and early establishment of greengram (Vigna radiata L.) during 2024-2025 at the Department of Agronomy, Uni

Stinging nettle and neem enhance antibody response to local killed and imported live infectious bursal disease vaccines in indigenous chicken in Kenya.

Immune responses are critical for protection of chickens from infectious bursal disease (IBD). In this study, the antibody response-enhancing effect of drinking water supplementation of 1% stinging nettle and neem on different IBD vaccines and vaccination regimes was evaluated, using 36 (n = 36) specific antibody negative indigenous chicks. The birds were allocated into 3 groups as follows: 1A-C, 2A-C, and 3A-B, while group 3C acted as the unvaccinated non-supplemented control. A local inactivated K1 and imported live attenuated D78 IBD vaccines were given to groups 1A-C and 3A-B at 14 and 28

Unveiling the carbohydrates profile of anti-diabetic medicinal plants by a developed and validated high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with refractive index detector (HPLC-RID).

Naturally occurring carbohydrates play a crucial role in the food nutritional and medicinal properties of plants. However, measuring these sugars in common herbal products is still not well established, especially for those intended for diabetic patients. The sugar content in these products directly impacts their safety, effectiveness, and authenticity. This study presents a straightforward isocratic high -performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with a refractive index (RI) detector. It allows for the simultaneous identification and measurement of seven sugars: D-(-)-Ribose, D-(+)-Xylo

Computational Evidences of Phytochemical Mediated Disruption of PLpro Driven Replication of SARS-CoV-2: A Therapeutic Approach against COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been declared as a global pandemic by WHO. Comprehensive analysis of this unprecedented outbreak may help to fight against the disease and may play a pivotal role in decreasing the mortality rate linked with it. Papain-like protease (PLpro), a multifunctional polyprotein, facilitates the replication of SARS-CoV-2 and evades it from the host immunological response by antagonizing cytokines, interferons and may be considered as a potential drug target to combat the current pandemic. METHODS: Natural moieties obtained from medicinal plants were analy

Brine shrimp toxicity and antimalarial activity of some plants traditionally used in treatment of malaria in Msambweni district of Kenya.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In Kenya, most people especially in rural areas use traditional medicine and medicinal plants to treat many diseases including malaria. Malaria is of national concern in Kenya, in view of development of resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum to drugs especially chloroquine, which had been effective and affordable. There is need for alternative and affordable therapy. Many antimalarial drugs have been derived from medicinal plants and this is evident from the reported antiplasmodial activity. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study reports on the in vivo antimal

Anthelmintic screening of Bangladeshi medicinal plants and related phytochemicals using in vitro and in silico methods: An ethnobotanical perspective.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Infections caused by parasitic worms or helminth continue to pose a great burden on human and animal health, particularly in underdeveloped tropical and subtropical countries where they are endemic. Current anthelmintic drugs present serious limitations and the emergence of drug resistance has made it increasingly challenging to combat such infections (helminthiases). In Bangladesh, medicinal plants are often used by indigenous communities for the treatment of helminthiases. Knowledge on such plants along with screening for their anthelmintic activity has the po

Therapeutic anti-NLGP monoclonal antibody for carcinoembryonic antigen expressing tumors is nontoxic to Swiss and BALB/c mice.

A murine monoclonal antibody (mAb), 1C8 was developed against a novel glycoprotein NLGP and its unique property to recognize carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was reported. Utilizing this CEA recognizing property, 1C8 is successful to restrict the growth of CEA(+) murine and human cancers both in vitro and in vivo. Here, we have thoroughly evaluated the toxicity profile of this mAb 1C8 on different physiological systems of both tumor-free and tumor-bearing Swiss and BALB/c mice. Effective concentration (25 μg/mice) of 1C8 caused no behavioral changes in animals and no death was recorded. Moreover

An evaluation of the efficacy of ethanolic extract of Nigella sativa L. (Kalonji) on the clinical parameters of moderate‑to‑severe gingivitis: A split‑mouth clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: Gingivitis is a relatively innocuous and reversible inflammation of gingiva. If left untreated, it might progress involving the deeper supporting periodontal tissues of the tooth with consequent mobility and tooth loss. Compelling literature has suggested the role of local antibacterial and anti‑inflammatory agents as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (gold standard) for treating periodontal diseases. Various herbs such as Nimba (Azadirachta indica A. Juss), Babbula (Vachellia nilotica (L.) P.J.H. Hurter & Mabb.) and turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) have been used for gingivitis

Some Nigerian plants of dermatologic importance.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the world's population uses medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases and, in African countries, this rate is much higher. In recent years, however, medicinal plants have represented a primary health source for the pharmaceutical industry. No less than 400 compounds derived from plants are currently used in the preparation of drugs, such as vincristine and vinblastine used in the treatment of cancer. Nigerians still depend largely on crude herbal remedies or traditional medicine. They also use wild plants for cosmetics an
