Bacterial microbiota in stool may vary over a wide range, depending on age, nutrition, etc. The purpose of our work was to discriminate phyla and genera of intestinal bacteria and their biodiversity within a healthy population (North-Western Russia) compared to the patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The study group included 183 healthy persons 2 to 53 years old (a mean of 26.5±1.0 years old), and 41 T1DM patients (mean age 18.2±1.8 years old). The disease onset was at 11±1.5 years, with a T1DM experience of 7±1.5 years. Total DNA was isolated from the stool samples, and sequencing

OBJECTIVES: Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota, acting through the gut-brain axis, may play a critical role in stroke pathophysiology. Dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut microbiota, has been associated with neuroinflammation and poor stroke outcomes. This study aimed to compare gut microbiota composition in ischemic stroke patients versus healthy controls to explore potential microbial changes linked to stroke.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on 30 ischemic stroke patients and 30 healthy age- and

Newly renamed anaerobic bacterium Christensenella hongkongensis is an emerging pathogen associated with high mortality. Antimicrobial susceptibility profile and pathogenesis of C. hongkongensis are yet to be fully elucidated. Since its first description from Hong Kong and Canada in 2007, 20 Christensenella hongkongensis bloodstream infections (BSI) have been reported. We report the additional five cases of C. hongkongensis BSI from Australia and present their descriptive genomic epidemiology. We review the antimicrobial susceptibilities, clinical features and outcomes of cases of all C. hongko

Disruption of hydrogen (H2) cycling in the gut is linked to gastrointestinal disorders, infections and cancers. However, the mechanisms and microorganisms controlling H2 production in the gut remain unresolved. Here we show that gut H2 production is primarily driven by the microbial group B [FeFe]-hydrogenase. Metagenomics and metatranscriptomics of stool and tissue biopsy samples show that hydrogenase-encoding genes are widely present and transcribed in gut bacteria. Assessment of 19 taxonomically diverse gut isolates revealed that the group B [FeFe]-hydrogenases produce large amounts of H2 g

BACKGROUND: Parvimonas micra (P. micra), a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, exhibits colonization tendencies on oral mucosal and skin surfaces, potentially evolving into a pathogenic entity associated with diverse diseases. The diagnostic trajectory for P. micra-related diseases encounters delays, often with severe consequences, including fatality, attributed to the absence of symptom specificity and challenges in culture. The absence of a consensus on the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to P. micra exacerbates the complexity of addressing associated conditions. This study aims to eluc

PURPOSE: Gut microbiota has recently been recognized to be influenced by a broad range of pathologies. Alterations of gut microbiota are known as dysbiosis and have found to be related to chronic constipation, a condition which affects also pediatric patients with spina bifida (SB).
METHODS: In this study, gut microbiota richness and composition were investigated by 16S rRNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis in 48 SB patients (mean age, 11.9 ± 4.8 years) with secondary neurogenic constipation and 32 healthy controls (mean age, 18.0 ± 9.6 years). The study also aimed at exploring eventual

BACKGROUND: The brain-gut-microbiota axis plays a crucial role in the bidirectional interactions between the brain and the gut. Soluble epoxide hydrolase (coded by the Ephx2 gene) plays an important role in inflammation, which has been implicated in stress-related depression. Ephx2 knock-out (KO) mice exposed to chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) did not show depression-like behaviors, indicating stress resilience. Here we examined whether the brain-gut-microbiota axis influences the resilience in Ephx2 KO mice.
METHODS: Effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from CSDS-susceptible

BACKGROUND: The bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine protects against tuberculosis and heterologous infections but elicits high inter-individual variation in specific and nonspecific, or trained, immune responses. While the gut microbiome is increasingly recognized as an important modulator of vaccine responses and immunity in general, its potential role in BCG-induced protection is largely unknown.
RESULTS: Stool and blood were collected from 321 healthy adults before BCG vaccination, followed by blood sampling after 2 weeks and 3 months. Metagenomics based on de novo genome assembly revea

Acute bacterial mono-articular septic arthritis affects most commonly the lower extremity joints in adult population and most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Various risk factors determine susceptibility to infection including host immunity, medical co-morbidity and joint structural abnormality and other organisms may be involved. Parvimonas micra (P. micra) is among the rare organisms that may be associated with atypical septic arthritis and primarily affects the native knee joint. Only 3 case reports in the literature have reported on pyogenic pyogenic joint infection caused by thi

Atopobium rimae and Parvimonas micra are both Gram-positive anaerobes involved infrequently in human infections. We report a polymicrobial anaerobic bacteremia caused by these microorganisms. A 43-year-old woman receiving coadjuvant chemotherapy due to a retroperitoneal leiomiosarcoma presented with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever (38 °C). The two blood cultures resulted in isolation of A. rimae and P. micra, being identified at species level by matrix assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) technology with high log scores. The microorganisms were s

Chronic diabetic foot is a global burden affecting millions of people, and the chronicity of an ulcer is directly linked to the diverse bacterial burden and its biofilm mode of infection. The bacterial diversity of 100 chronic diabetic ulcer samples was profiled via traditional culturing method as well as metagenomic approach by sequencing the 16S rRNA V3 hyper-variable region on Illumina Miseq Platform (Illumina, Inc., San Diego, CA). All the relevant clinical metadata, including duration of diabetes, grade of ulcer, presence of neuropathy, and glycaemic level, were noted and correlated with

Biogas produced from the anaerobic digestion of animal slurry consists mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), but also includes other minor gases, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Since it can act as a potent corrosive agent and presents a health hazard even at low concentrations, H2S is considered an undesirable by-product of anaerobic digestion. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRBs) have been identified as the main biological source of H2S in a number of natural, biological, and human-made habitats, and thus represent likely candidate microorganisms responsible for the production of H2S

Oyster aquaculture is widely recognized as an effective way to mitigate coastal eutrophication, but critical knowledge gaps remain regarding how it modulates nitrogen removal processes, which requires further investigation. In this study, sediments from oyster farming (OY) and non-oyster farming (NOY) areas in Tieshan Bay, China, were analyzed to explore the impacts of oyster farming on denitrification and anammox in coastal sediments. OY sediments exhibited significantly higher sediment oxygen demand (SOD), total organic carbon (TOC), ammonium (NH4+), ferrous iron (Fe2+), and sulfide than NOY

Platinum-based chemotherapy remains a key treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in patients without actionable mutations or response to immunotherapy. Emerging evidence highlights the gut-lung axis as an important factor influencing lung cancer biology and treatment outcomes. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) may restore gut microbial balance and improve anticancer therapy response. However, evidence in patients receiving conventional chemotherapy is limited. We report a case of FMT used to treat refractory Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in a patient with adv

Obesity is a complex, multifactorial chronic disease characterized by excessive and/or aberrant adiposity that requires interventions beyond conventional calorie-restriction models. Current clinical guidelines converge on behavioral modification, encompassing nutritional therapy, physical activity, stress reduction, and sleep improvement, as the cornerstone of obesity management, with psychological therapy, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric procedures as adjunctive or escalating options. While traditional "one-size-fits-all" dietary approaches frequently yield suboptimal long-term outcomes, preci

Phytogenic feed additives from agro-industrial byproducts are increasingly explored as antibiotic alternatives in poultry, yet their efficacy in Muscovy ducks remains poorly documented. This study investigated the effects of dietary date (Phoenix dactylifera) fruit supplementation at 0% (control), 5% (D1), and 10% (D2) on growth performance, blood biochemistry, antioxidant status, immune function, meat quality, intestinal morphology, and cecal microbiota in Muscovy ducks over a 42-day feeding trial. Date fruit supplementation dose-dependently improved final body weight, average daily gain, and

Honey bee gut microbiome studies have primarily emphasized bacteria, leaving fungal communities comparatively overlooked despite their ecological and functional importance. Whole-genome shotgun metagenomics of Apis cerana and Apis mellifera revealed fungal assemblages dominated by Ascomycota, with Basidiomycota and Microsporidia in minor proportions, alongside gut bacterial communities composed mainly of Pseudomonadota, Bacillota, and Actinomycetota. The bacterial diversity was markedly higher in A. mellifera (Shannon = 5.90; Simpson = 0.98) than in A. cerana (Shannon = 4.01; Simpson = 0.94; p

AIMS: Panax quinquefolius Radix (American ginseng) is a medicinal herb used for its neuroprotective and tonic effects. However, the antidepressant potential of its polysaccharide components is not well studied. This research aimed to investigate the antidepressant effects of XYS1, a polysaccharide from American ginseng, focusing on mechanisms related to the complement system and the gut-brain axis.
METHODS: A chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model was used to induce depressive behaviors. Mice were treated with XYS1 via oral gavage, followed by assessments of behavior, molecular

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants of significant environmental concern; however, their cross-tissue physiological impacts and growth-inhibitory mechanisms in economically important freshwater fish remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated the systemic effects of dietary exposure to 500 μm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on the gut-liver-muscle axis in Qihe gibel carp (Carassius gibelio var. Qihe). Fish were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 5, 50, and 100 μg/g feed) for 28 days. PS-MPs exposure significantly suppressed growth performance i

Heterozygous A53T α-synuclein transgenic mice (M83 line) typically exhibit late-onset Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms. This study established an accelerated PD model via bilateral intranigral injection of α-synuclein preformed fibrils (PFF) to characterize central and peripheral pathologies. Three-month-old heterozygous A53T mice received bilateral substantia nigra injections of α-synuclein PFF or PBS. Motor function was assessed monthly. Following the onset of motor deficits, the substantia nigra was harvested for immunohistochemistry and colons were harvested for H&E, transcriptomic analys
