Bacterial diversity obtained by culturable approaches in the gut of Glossina pallidipes population from a non sleeping sickness focus in Tanzania: preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Glossina pallidipes is a haematophagous insect that serves as a cyclic transmitter of trypanosomes causing African Trypanosomiasis (AT). To fully assess the role of G. pallidipes in the epidemiology of AT, especially the human form of the disease (HAT), it is essential to know the microbial diversity inhabiting the gut of natural fly populations. This study aimed to examine the diversity of G. pallidipes fly gut bacteria by culture-dependent approaches. RESULTS: 113 bacterial isolates were obtained from aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms originating from the gut of G. pallidipes

Validation of 16S rDNA sequencing in microdissected bowel biopsies from Crohn's disease patients to assess bacterial flora diversity.

The bowel flora is implicated in Crohn's disease (CD) pathogenesis but its precise role is still unclear. Several non-mutually exclusive hypotheses have been proposed: an unidentified persistent pathogen; excessive bacterial translocation; an immune system abnormality in response to normal bacteria; or a breakdown in the balance between protective and harmful bacteria. These hypotheses can be tested by identifying bacteria in specific microscopic bowel structures or lesions. The present paper describes a novel technique to assess bacterial flora diversity in bowel biopsies, by combining laser

Gut Microbiota Signatures of Sarcopenia: A Comparative 16S rRNA Sequencing Study in Older Indian Adults.

AIM: Emerging evidence suggests that alterations in gut microbiota composition may contribute to the onset and progression of sarcopenia through mechanisms involving systemic inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and reduced production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). However, data from Indian older adults-who exhibit diverse diets and microbiota profiles-are lacking. METHODS: This hospital-based cross-sectional pilot study enrolled 30 older adults aged ≥ 60 years, including 15 with sarcopenic and 15 age- and sex-matched nonsarcopenic. Sarcopenia was classified according to the Asian Work

Gut microbiome-derived glycine lipids are diet-dependent modulators of hepatic injury and atherosclerosis.

Oral and gut Bacteroidetes produce unique classes of serine-glycine lipodipeptides and glycine aminolipids that signal through host Toll-like receptor 2. These glycine lipids have also been detected in human arteries, but their effects on atherosclerosis are unknown. Here, we sought to investigate the bioactivity of bacterial glycine lipids in mouse models of atherosclerosis. Lipid 654 (L654), a serine-glycine lipodipeptide species, was first tested in a high-fat diet (HFD)-fed Ldlr-/- model of atherosclerosis. Intraperitoneal administration of L654 over 7 weeks to HFD-fed Ldlr-/- mice resulte

Association between aging-dependent gut microbiome dysbiosis and dry eye severity in C57BL/6 male mouse model: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: While aging is a potent risk factor of dry eye disease, age-related gut dysbiosis is associated with inflammation and chronic geriatric diseases. Emerging evidence have demonstrated that gut dysbiosis contributes to the pathophysiology or exacerbation of ocular diseases including dry eye disease. However, the relationship between aging-related changes in gut microbiota and dry eye disease has not been elucidated. In this pilot study, we investigated the association between aging-dependent microbiome changes and dry eye severity in C57BL/6 male mice. RESULTS: Eight-week-old (8 W, n

Necrotizing Gingivitis: Microbial Diversity and Quantification of Protein Secretion in Necrotizing Gingivitis.

Necrotizing gingivitis (NG) is a necrotizing periodontal disease that differs from chronic gingivitis (CG). To date, both the microbiological causes and the involved host cytokine response of NG still remain unclear. Here, we investigated corresponding interdental plaque and serum samples from two groups of Chinese patients with CG (n = 21) or NG (n = 21). The microbiota were studied by 16S rRNA Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the microbial metagenome and by assessing quantitatively the abundance of the phylum Bacteroidetes, the genus Prevotella and the species T. forsythia, P. endodontalis, and

Feline gut microbiota composition in association with feline coronavirus infection: A pilot study.

Feline coronaviruses (FCoV) colonize the intestinal tract, however, due to not fully understood mutations, they can spread systemically and cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Recent studies on human medicine report that gut microbiota is involved in the development of systemic disorders and could influence the immune response to viral diseases. The aim of this study was to provide preliminary data on the fecal microbiota composition in healthy cats compared to FCoV-infected cats, with and without FIP. Cats were equally grouped as healthy FCoV-negative, healthy FCoV-positive or FIP affe
