Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants that accumulate in forest soils via atmospheric deposition. However, the combined effects of long-term nitrogen (N) addition and forest stand type on PAH retention and vertical distribution remain poorly understood. This study examined how three levels of long-term (>20 years) N addition (Control, Low, High) influence PAH concentrations across soil horizons (F, H, Top B, and Low B) under three dominant forest stands in Eastern Canada: sugar maple, balsam fir, and black spruce. We quantified total, medium molecular weight

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a type IV hypersensitivity reaction, and The European Standard Series (ESS) Patch Test (PT) is widely used in determining the possible responsible allergens causing ACD. The dynamic nature of the industrial products, socioeconomic and environmental factors cause the frequency of common allergens to change over the years and among different regions.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the results of ESS PT of our centre in the last decade, and determine the current spectrum of allergens and their clinical relevance.

IMPORTANCE: When fragrance- and botanical-related (F/BR) allergy is identified, concomitant reaction (CR) frequencies can help direct avoidance recommendations.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the CR rates for F/BR allergens.
DESIGN: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group data 2007-2016 was conducted. Frequencies of demographics, positive reactions, strength of reactions, trends, and CR rates were calculated.
RESULTS: A total of 5504 (22.7%) of 24,246 patients had F/BR allergic reactions. The F/BR-sensitive patients were more likely

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Impatiens capensis (jewelweed) is native to the Eastern and Midwestern US and Canada. Many Native American tribes used I. capensis and its close relatives to treat/prevent rash from plant sources particularly Toxicodendron radicans and Urtica dioica. I. balsamina (garden balsam) a native of China was used by the indigenous people of Asia for similar purposes.
AIM OF STUDY: This study aims to validate ethnopharmacological use of jewelweed in poison ivy (PI) dermatitis prevention and to refute scientific papers denying this efficacy. Additionally, the content of

INTRODUCTION: Patch testing is performed to diagnose allergic contact dermatitis to avoid exposure to the revealed contact allergens. Nevertheless, patch testing is not routinely performed in the evaluation of patients with chronic idiopathic (spontaneous) urticaria (CIU). The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of sensitization to patch test allergens in severe CIU and assess a role of the allergen avoidance in CIU remission.
METHODS: The cases of patients with severe CIU were retrospectively studied. The patients were patch tested using T.R.U.E. TEST. Three groups were st

Chronic eczematous cheilitis comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders, the cause of which often remains obscure. Our object was to investigate the frequency of contact allergy in a cohort of patients with chronic eczematous cheilitis attending a tertiary referral clinic. Patients (106 females and 23 males) with chronic eczematous cheilitis were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were tested with a standard patch test series and a fraction with a dedicated patch test series. Children were also tested with atopy patch tests. Moreover, all patients were investigated for past or current pr

PURPOSE: Reading is a critical visual task that depends on the resolution of fine character features, and how these features are affected by display variables under degraded viewing conditions remains an important question in clinical psychophysics. While contrast polarity effects on reading have been documented in Latin scripts, evidence from non-Latin orthographies is limited. This study investigated the effect of contrast polarity on Arabic reading performance under simulated visual impairment.
METHODS: Reading acuity (RA), maximum reading speed (MRS) and critical print size (CPS) were ass

Commiphora gileadensis (L.) C.Chr. has long been regarded as the most likely botanical source of the historical apharsemon (Balm of Gilead). Despite considerable historical interest, little is known about the chemical variability of geographically separated populations currently assigned to this taxon. In the present study, resin samples obtained from putative C. gileadensis accessions originating from Ein Gedi (Israel), Oman, and a Somalia-derived accession cultivated in Yotvata, Israel, were analyzed by GC-MS. In addition, freshly collected resin from the Somalia-derived accession was compar

BACKGROUND: There has been debate regarding whether patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) have an altered frequency of contact allergen sensitization. Increased exposure to topical medications and moisturizers as well as impaired skin barrier function increase the risk of contact sensitization, whereas the Th2-skewed inflammatory pathway of AD is associated with a reduced risk.
OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study was performed to determine the characteristics of contact sensitization in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) patients with a current or past history of AD.
METHODS: A clinical record
