A double age-structured model of the co-infection of tuberculosis and HIV.

After decades on the decline, it is believed that the emergence of HIV is responsible for an increase in the tuberculosis prevalence. The leading infectious disease in the world, tuberculosis is also the leading cause of death among HIV-positive individuals. Each disease progresses through several stages. The current model suggests modeling these stages through a time-since-infection tracking transmission rate function, which, when considering co-infection, introduces a double-age structure in the PDE system. The basic and invasion reproduction numbers for each disease are calculated and the b

Transmission dynamics for vector-borne diseases in a patchy environment.

In this paper, a mathematical model is derived to describe the transmission and spread of vector-borne diseases over a patchy environment. The model incorporates into the classic Ross-MacDonald model two factors: disease latencies in both hosts and vectors, and dispersal of hosts between patches. The basic reproduction number R(0) is identified by the theory of the next generation operator for structured disease models. The dynamics of the model is investigated in terms of R(0). It is shown that the disease free equilibrium is asymptotically stable if R(0) > 1, and it is unstable if R(0) > 1;

The near disappearance of genital warts in young women 4 years after commencing a national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme.

BACKGROUND: Australia provided free quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccines to 12-18-year-old girls and women aged ≤26 years from mid-2007 until the end of 2009. After this time, only girls aged 12-13 years had access to free vaccines. METHODS: Before and after the study, of the proportion of new patients attending Melbourne Sexual Health Centre from mid-2004 to mid-2011, diagnosed with genital warts (GW) by risk group. RESULTS: From July 2004 to June 2011, 52 454 new patients were seen at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre and 5021 (9.6%, 95% CI 9.3% to 9.8%) were diagnosed with GW. From Jul

Growth rates in epidemic models: application to a model for HIV/AIDS progression.

The most common quantity used to describe the growth of an epidemic when modelling infectious diseases is the basic reproduction number R0. While R0 is most appropriate for epidemics with short-lasting infections, long-lasting infections such as HIV/AIDS may call for the use of growth rates with other properties. For a group of multi-state compartment models we define both R0, the actual reproduction number Ra(t), and the intrinsic growth rate r. We study the relationship between these different reproduction numbers and growth rates and take a brief look at how they could be estimated from act

A PARTIALLY DIFFUSIVE MODEL FOR FROGEYE LEAF SPOT EPIDEMICS IN SOYBEAN.

We propose a new mathematical model based on partial differential equations to study the dynamics of the soybean disease frogeye leaf spot, a major affliction caused by the fungus Cercospora sojina. Our model extends the ordinary differential equations framework developed in earlier studies to incorporate the spatial diffusion of the disease within soybean plants. We prove the global-in-time solution theory of the model, determine the basic reproduction number for the system, and analyze the long-time behavior of the system subject to different values of the basic reproduction number. Our proo

Quantifying mechanistic traits of influenza viral dynamics using in vitro data.

When analysing in vitro data, growth kinetics of influenza virus strains are often compared by computing their growth rates, which are sometimes used as proxies for fitness. However, analogous to mathematical models for epidemics, the growth rate can be defined as a function of mechanistic traits: the basic reproduction number (the average number of cells each infected cell infects) and the mean generation time (the average length of a replication cycle). Fitting a model to previously published and newly generated data from experiments in human lung cells, we compared estimates of growth rate,

The effect of treatment-induced resistance in a two-strain tuberculosis model with age structure and spatial diffusion.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious chronic infectious disease that, without timely intervention, can lead to severe health consequences or even death. Improper or incomplete treatment often induces the emergence of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB), which greatly complicates disease management and intensifies its public health burden. This paper develops and analyzes a two-strain TB transmission model incorporating age structure during latency, spatial diffusion, and a treatment-induced resistance pathway. Methodologically, we establish the global existence and non-negativity of model solutions

Some models for epidemics of vector-transmitted diseases.

Vector-transmitted diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya have been spreading rapidly in many parts of the world. The Zika virus has been known since 1947 and invaded South America in 2013. It can be transmitted not only by (mosquito) vectors but also directly through sexual contact. Zika has developed into a serious global health problem because, while most cases are asymptomatic or very light, babies born to Zika - infected mothers may develop microcephaly and other very serious birth defects. We formulate and analyze two epidemic models for vector-transmitted diseases, one appropriat

Modelling the effects of contaminated environments on HFMD infections in mainland China.

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) has spread widely in mainland China increasing in prevalence in most years with serious consequences for child health. The HFMD virus can survive for a long period outside the host in suitable conditions, and hence contaminated environments may play important roles in HFMD infection. A new mathematical model was proposed and used to investigate the roles that asymptomatic individuals and contaminated environments played in HFMD dynamics. The model includes both direct transmission between susceptible and infected individuals and indirect transmission via free-liv

A multi-group model for estimating the transmission rate of hand, foot and mouth disease in mainland China.

In order to access the influence of different age groups on the spread of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), we established the multi-group model with migration following the epidemiology of HFMD. The basic reproduction number of the HFMD epidemic model was calculated by the next generation operator method. According to China's national surveillance data on HFMD, we fitted the model parameters and estimated the transmission rates among different age groups. Besides, we carried out sensitivity analysis for the basic reproduction number to find some valuable regulatory measures. Our findings s

Variability in the Population Diffusion Patterns of SARS-CoV-2 by Exposure Setting and Its Roles in Driving Epidemic Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Identifying transmission events that trigger epidemic spread is paramount for informing outbreak control. This study characterised the population diffusion patterns of SARS-CoV-2 across exposure settings and evaluate their ramifications in epidemic growth. METHODS: In Hong Kong, COVID-19 clusters delineated through case-based surveillance during the pandemic period were classified into eight exposure settings: residence, home gathering, neighbourhood, workplace (office)/school, workplace (non-office), daily activity, social activity and healthcare. Diffusion patterns characterised

Mathematical modeling of dengue virus transmission: exploring vector, vertical, and sexual pathways with sensitivity and bifurcation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV) remains a critical global health threat, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Traditional models primarily focus on mosquito-borne transmission, overlooking alternative pathways such as vertical and sexual transmission. This study develops a comprehensive mathematical model that integrates multiple transmission routes to improve understanding of dengue dynamics and inform effective control strategies. METHODS: We develop a compartmental SEIR-based model that captures dengue virus transmission through mosquito vectors, vertical (transovarial), and se

Threshold dynamics of an age-structured HIV model with virus-to-cell, cell-to-cell transmissions, and CTL immune response.

Both virus-to-cell and cell-to-cell transmission modes play a crucial role in the long-term dynamics of HIV infection. Additionally, the immune response - particularly the activity of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) - can significantly influence the threshold conditions for viral persistence. By incorporating age-structured within-host virus dynamics and the immune response, we develop a dynamical model to explore the intricacies of HIV transmission and progression within a detailed mathematical framework. Specifically, by analyzing the characteristic equations, we establish the local stability

Parameter estimation of modeling schistosomiasis transmission for four provinces in China.

According to monitoring data of Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Jiangsu Provinces, in this paper the transmission of schistosomiasis is studied based on Barbour's mathematical model. The values of the basic reproduction number and key parameters are obtained with two methods. The first method is to calculate directly by using parameter values in references. The second one is to estimate parameter values by the methods of noise measurement and data smoothing and then to obtain new values of basic reproduction number. Comparing these two methods, we found the second method is good to fit the data. This p

Incorporating tick feeding behaviour into R0 for tick-borne pathogens.

Tick-borne pathogens pose a considerable disease burden in Europe and North America, where increasing numbers of human cases and the emergence of new tick-borne pathogens has renewed interest in resolving the mechanisms underpinning their geographical distribution and abundance. For Borrelia burgdorferi and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus, transmission of infection from one generation of ticks to another occurs when older nymphal ticks infect younger larval ticks feeding on the same host, either indirectly via systemic infection of the vertebrate host or directly when feeding in close prox

Dynamic modelling of strategies for the control of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis outbreaks in schools in Changsha, China (2004-2015).

Outbreaks of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) - a rapidly progressing and highly contagious infection - often occur in schools during summer and autumn. We used dynamic modelling to evaluate the efficacy of interventions to control AHC outbreaks in schools. A susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model was built to simulate AHC outbreaks in Chinese schools, with isolation or school closure added into the model. We used outbreak data from the period 2004-2015 in our models to estimate the effective reproduction number and assess the efficacy of interventions. The median effective reproduc

From regional pulse vaccination to global disease eradication: insights from a mathematical model of poliomyelitis.

Mass-vaccination campaigns are an important strategy in the global fight against poliomyelitis and measles. The large-scale logistics required for these mass immunisation campaigns magnifies the need for research into the effectiveness and optimal deployment of pulse vaccination. In order to better understand this control strategy, we propose a mathematical model accounting for the disease dynamics in connected regions, incorporating seasonality, environmental reservoirs and independent periodic pulse vaccination schedules in each region. The effective reproduction number, Re, is defined and p

Designing programs for eliminating canine rabies from islands: Bali, Indonesia as a case study.

BACKGROUND: Canine rabies is one of the most important and feared zoonotic diseases in the world. In some regions rabies elimination is being successfully coordinated, whereas in others rabies is endemic and continues to spread to uninfected areas. As epidemics emerge, both accepted and contentious control methods are used, as questions remain over the most effective strategy to eliminate rabies. The Indonesian island of Bali was rabies-free until 2008 when an epidemic in domestic dogs began, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people. Here we analyze data from the epidemic and compare the eff

Stability of ecosystem: global properties of a general predator-prey model.

Establishing the conditions for the stability of ecosystems and for stable coexistence of interacting populations is a problem of the highest priority in mathematical biology. This problem is usually considered under specific assumptions made regarding the functional forms of non-linear feedbacks. However, there is growing understanding that this approach has a number of major deficiencies. The most important of these is that the precise forms of the functional responses involved in the model are unknown in detail, and we can hardly expect that these will be known in feasible future.
