Behavioral and cognitive group treatment for fear of flying: a randomized controlled trial.

In a long-standing fear-of-flying program, persons with fear of flying (N=150) were after a diagnostic assessment and individual preparation phase randomly assigned to either a 1-day behavioral group treatment (BGT) program, a 2-day cognitive-behavioral group treatment (CBGT) program or a waiting list (WL) control group. A post-treatment flight on a commercial airline measured participants' ability to fly. Different self-report flight anxiety questionnaires were completed before, during and after treatment at 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up. Results indicated that both treatments were superior t

The perceived onset of dieting and loss of control eating behaviors in overweight children.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the self-reported temporal relationships of dieting, binge eating, and overweight in childhood. METHOD: One hundred five non-treatment-seeking overweight children ages 6-13 years were interviewed with the children's Eating Disorder Examination (ChEDE) and queried regarding dieting, loss of control (LOC) eating, and overweight history. Questionnaires of depressive symptoms, trait anxiety, and parent-reported problems were completed. RESULTS: Sixty percent of the children reported having attempted at least one diet. These children had higher ChEDE scor

Impact of cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder on comorbidity: a controlled investigation.

This study examined the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for principal panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, on comorbidity in 30 individuals (16 female). To test the hypothesis that improvements in co-existing conditions were not due to spontaneous fluctuations across time, patients receiving immediate CBT were compared to those assigned to wait list (n = 11). Results indicated clinician-rated severity of comorbid specific phobia declined significantly following immediate CBT compared to no change after wait list. The number of patients without comorbidity of any severity i

Analysis of lifestyle and behavioral characteristics in Meniere's disease patients and a control population.

A questionnaire was devised to quantify and measure four categories: the behavioral characteristics of Type A, self-restraint and escape; the causes of anxiety; means of relaxation; and symptoms incidental to anxiety. Questionnaire analysis was performed in patients (n = 60) with Meniere's disease and in a control population (n = 936). It was statistically proven that the patient group possessed a stress-causative tendency in behavioral characteristics, felt stronger anxiety and showed more severe symptoms owing to this anxiety. Since the level of anxiety highly correlates with the score of be

A controlled study of type A behavior and psychophysiologic responses to stress in anorexia nervosa.

Adolescents and young adults meeting DSM-III criteria for anorexia nervosa (n = 13) and atypical eating disorders (n = 7) were compared with weight-recovered anorectics (n = 6) and normal weight controls (n = 11) using a type-A structured interview and a computerized stress procedure. Heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiographic changes were monitored. Anorexia nervosa subjects demonstrated significantly more type-A characteristics than controls. The emaciated and weight-recovered anorectics had elevated hostility scores on the type-A interview, which has been shown in recent studies o

Compensatory speech behaviors in individuals with cleft palate: a regulation/control phenomenon?

The articulation errors associated with velopharyngeal incompetence are of particular interest to clinicians and researchers because the problems they pose usually remain after surgical repair and the reasons they appear may have important implications for speech-motor control. The intriguing question of why individuals develop and maintain such detrimental behaviors has been the focus of our laboratory's attention over the past 25 years. The purpose of this paper is to present a hypothesis dealing with compensatory speech behaviors in cleft palate, provide some data in support of this hypothe

A machine learning approach to behavioral signals of burnout in audit and control professions.

Burnout is a persistent and growing concern in audit- and control-oriented professions, where prolonged cognitive demands and sustained performance pressure may manifest as observable behavioral withdrawal. This study examines absenteeism as an objective behavioral proxy for burnout and evaluates its determinants using a comparative machine learning framework. Drawing on a real-world human resources dataset, the analysis focuses on a specialized subsample of audit- and control-oriented employees. Multiple regression algorithms were benchmarked, including ordinary least squares, ridge regressio

Mindful exercise intervention on exercise affect and behavior: A randomized controlled trial.

This study examined whether a four-week mindful exercise intervention could enhance affective responses and promote exercise intention and behavior. We also tested whether affective valence during exercise and post-exercise enjoyment predicted these outcomes. Ninety-seven insufficiently active adults in the intention or preparation stage of exercise behavior were randomly assigned to mindfulness, distraction, or control conditions. Participants engaged in low- to moderate-intensity exercise two to three times per week for four weeks while receiving a guided mindfulness audio, a neutral podcast

A Non-Controlled Study of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Panic Disorder in Veterans.

Panic disorder is a highly prevalent and impairing diagnosis in veterans. Despite consistent efficacy findings in community samples, few studies have investigated evidence-based psychotherapies in veterans with panic disorder, limiting the understanding of their utility and deployment in Veterans Affairs (VA) settings. The present study preliminarily investigated cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder via a non-controlled design in a treatment-seeking veteran sample with panic disorder at the VA. Of the 41 veterans initiating treatment, 28 (68.3%) participants completed at least

Evaluation of eating behaviors in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa: A case-control study.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory debilitating disorder that can result in significant morbidity. In addition to medical and surgical treatments, lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation and weight control have an important benefit in HS management. These modifications can be challenging for both the patient and the clinician. The differences in eating behavior of HS patients compared to the general population are mostly unknown. Defining these differences in HS patients may help to develop more effective weight loss strategies. In our study, we aim to describe d

Eating behaviors in childhood eosinophilic esophagitis: A retrospective case-controlled study.

BACKGROUND:: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disease in the esophagus. It is associated with feeding difficulties. We aimed to assess eating behaviors in patients with EoE and compare them with controls. METHODS:: This case-controled study enrolled children aged 0–16 years where their eating/behavior scores were measured. Child Behavior Frequency Scores (CBFS) >61, Parents Feeling/strategies Frequency Score (PFSFS) >20 and the Total Behavioral Pediatric Feeding Assessment Scores (BPFAS) >84 were considered as abnormal results. RESULTS:: The study inv

Food sensing controls C. elegans reproductive behavior by neuromodulatory disinhibition.

Like many organisms, the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans incorporates an assessment of environmental quality into its reproductive strategy. C. elegans hermaphrodites release fertilized eggs into food-rich environments but retain them in the absence of food. Here, we report the discovery of a neural circuit required for the modulation of reproductive behavior by food sensing. A mutation that electrically silences the AVK interneurons uncouples egg laying from detection of environmental food cues. We find that AVK activity inhibits egg laying, and AVKs themselves are inhibited by dopamine rele

Acute psychosocial stress modulates neural and behavioral substrates of cognitive control.

Acute psychosocial stress affects learning, memory, and attention, but the evidence for the influence of stress on the neural processes supporting cognitive control remains mixed. We investigated how acute psychosocial stress influences performance and neural processing during the Go/NoGo task-an established cognitive control task. The experimental group underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) acute stress induction, whereas the control group completed personality questionnaires. Then, participants completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) Go/NoGo task, with self-report, b

The Cerebellum and the Motor Cortex: Multiple Networks Controlling Multiple Aspects of Behavior.

The cerebellum and its thalamic projections to the primary motor cortex (M1) are well known to play an essential role in executing daily actions. Anatomic investigations in animals and postmortem humans have established the reciprocal connections between these regions; however, how these pathways can shape cortical activity in behavioral contexts and help promote recovery in neuropathological conditions remains not well understood. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive description of these pathways in animals and humans and discuss how novel noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) me

Plants' emission behaviors under dual control of pollutant concentration and quantity.

Quantity-based and concentration-based limits are two common environmental permitting approaches utilized by government worldwide in environmental management. While existing literature is still unambiguous about roles played by quantity-based versus concentration-based limits in environmental management, it becomes evident that relying exclusively on concentration-based or quantity-based limits to control plant emissions may not necessarily result in improved environmental quality. This paper leverages a unique opportunity arising from a recent reform in China's Pollutant Emission Permit Syste

A Randomized Controlled Neuroimaging Trial of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Fibromyalgia Pain.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by pervasive pain-related symptomatology and high levels of negative affect. Mind-body treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) appear to foster improvement in FM via reductions in pain-related catastrophizing, a set of negative, pain-amplifying cognitive and emotional processes. However, the neural underpinnings of CBT's catastrophizing-reducing effects remain uncertain. This randomized controlled mechanistic trial was designed to assess CBT's effects on pain catastrophizing and its underlying brain circuitry. METHODS: Of 114 enrolle
