Risk-adjusted benchmarks in laparoscopic liver surgery in a national cohort.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the best achievable outcomes in laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) after risk adjustment based on surgical technical difficulty using a national registry. METHODS: LLRs registered in the Italian Group of Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery registry from November 2014 to March 2018 were considered. Benchmarks were calculated according to the Achievable Benchmark of Care (ABC™). LLRs at each centre were divided into three clusters (groups I, II and III) based on the Kawaguchi classification. ABCs for overall and major morbidity were calculated in each cluster

Principles for Developing Benchmark Criteria for Staff Training in Responsible Gambling.

One approach to minimizing the negative consequences of excessive gambling is staff training to reduce the rate of the development of new cases of harm or disorder within their customers. The primary goal of the present study was to assess suitable benchmark criteria for the training of gambling employees at casinos and lottery retailers. The study utilised the Delphi Method, a survey with one qualitative and two quantitative phases. A total of 21 invited international experts in the responsible gambling field participated in all three phases. A total of 75 performance indicators were outlined

A benchmark for evaluation of algorithms for identification of cellular correlates of clinical outcomes.

The Flow Cytometry: Critical Assessment of Population Identification Methods (FlowCAP) challenges were established to compare the performance of computational methods for identifying cell populations in multidimensional flow cytometry data. Here we report the results of FlowCAP-IV where algorithms from seven different research groups predicted the time to progression to AIDS among a cohort of 384 HIV+ subjects, using antigen-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples analyzed with a 14-color staining panel. Two approaches (FlowReMi.1 and flowDensity-flowType-RchyOptimyx) provi

Benchmarks for value in cancer care: an analysis of a large commercial population.

PurposeCancer costs are increasing at an unprecedented rate. Key cost drivers include chemotherapy, hospital admissions/emergency room visits, and aggressive end-of-life care. We sought to evaluate these costs in a commercial payer population in collaboration with consultants from Milliman.Patients and methodsWe used a retrospective analysis of Medstat 2007 to evaluate chemotherapy costs and use. Included patients had a cancer diagnosis; received chemotherapy during the evaluation period; had at least 1 day of coverage between January 1 and December 31, 2007 (medical and prescription coverage)

Biliary atresia in England and Wales: results of centralization and new benchmark.

INTRODUCTION: Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare, potentially life-threatening condition of the newborn presenting with conjugated jaundice. Typically, it is treated by an initial attempt to restore bile flow (the Kasai portoenterostomy [KP]) as soon as possible after diagnosis and, if this fails, liver transplantation. Since 1999, the treatment of BA has been centralized to 3 centers in England and Wales able to offer both treatment options. The aim of this study was to review the outcome of this policy change and provide a national benchmark. METHODS: The management of all infants born within E

Accurate benchmark calculations on the gas-phase basicities of small molecules.

Accurate benchmark calculations of gas-phase basicities of small molecules are presented and compared with available experimental results. The optimized geometries and thermochemical analyses were obtained from MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations. Two different ab initio electron-correlated methods MP2 and CCSD(T) were employed for subsequent gas-phase basicity calculations, and the single-point energies were extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. The overall accuracy for different ab initio methods is compared, and the accuracy in descending order is CCSD(T)_CBS > CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ >

Benchmarks in clinical productivity: a national comprehensive cancer network survey.

PURPOSE: Oncologists in academic cancer centers usually generate professional fees that are insufficient to cover salaries and other expenses, despite significant clinical activity; therefore, supplemental funding is frequently required in order to support competitive levels of physician compensation. Relative value units (RVUs) allow comparisons of productivity across institutions and practice locations and provide a reasonable point of reference on which funding decisions can be based. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical productivity and other characteristics of oncology physicians practicing

A systematic benchmarking pipeline for demand forecasting and inventory-aware supply chain decision support.

Demand forecasting has been shown to be one of the key facilitators of successful supply chain and inventory management. In this work, we introduce a benchmarking pipeline for demand forecasting in retail that includes data preprocessing, comparative benchmarking of different machine learning/deep learning (ML/DL) approaches, and decision-focused evaluation. Unlike other works that compare predictive performance of ML/DL models and end there, our pipeline links reproducible ML/DL benchmarking and decision-focused evaluation through cost of inventory management in order to derive costs from for

ct-validation: an open framework for benchmarking target-indication evidence against clinical trial outcomes.

SUMMARY: Human genetic evidence provides a strong foundation for selecting drug targets. However, consistent benchmarking of target-indication evidence against clinical trial outcomes has been hindered by proprietary data and customised pipelines. To address this, we present the Python package ct-validation, which evaluates whether target-indication pairs supported by specific evidence sources are enriched for clinical progression. This package computes relative success (RS) and odds ratios (OR) with confidence intervals across clinical phase transitions. It also supports ontology-based semanti

A Case Study on Best Practices for Benchmarking Pesticide Degradation with Regulatory DT50 Values.

Pesticide soil degradation half-lives (DT50) derived from laboratory studies are commonly summarized as representative reference values that support environmental exposure and risk assessment. Interpretation of degradation studies using more complex conditions compared to the single-compound standard studies may be difficult in terms of considering the variability of the underlying laboratory datasets. This work demonstrates a benchmarking and interpretation framework that uses regulatory reference datasets to evaluate whether experimentally determined DT50 values fall within experimental vari

Interpretable graph-based models on multimodal biomedical data integration: a technical review and benchmarking.

Integrating diverse biomedical modalities is essential for robust healthcare insights, and graph-based models are increasingly used to capture complex relational structures. Yet, their clinical translation hinges on interpretability. This review surveys interpretable graph-based models applied to multimodal biomedical data, highlighting dominant trends in disease classification, static graph construction, and post-hoc explainability. We categorize explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques, benchmark SHAP, saliency, sensitivity, and graph masking on Alzheimer's disease data, and reve

Rate of Recommendation for Follow-up MRI Post-shoulder Ultrasound: An Initial Benchmarking Study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Ultrasound exhibits comparable accuracy to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessing many common shoulder pathologies. Despite this, many patients are being recommended for follow-up MRI after undergoing shoulder ultrasound. The purpose of this study is to offer an initial benchmark for an acceptable rate of recommendation for follow-up MRI following shoulder ultrasound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During a two-month period all diagnostic shoulder ultrasound imaging reports from a community radiology site were isolated (n = 350). Referrals were from a mixed base but

Benchmarking Radiation Transport Monte Carlo Simulations with MCNP and Geant4 Using High Performance Computing.

The objective of this paper is to compare the performance of several high-performance computing systems in order to inform decisions regarding their use for Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport. Gamma ray emission from 131 I in the human thyroid and detection using a personal radiation detector were modeled using the MCNP and Geant4 Monte Carlo software. These simulations were benchmarked by recording the computing time needed to run the simulation as a function of the number of parallel computing threads used. Simulations were run using a virtual machine, two desktop PCs, a CX-1 sup

Surface and Interface Engineering in Integrated Photonic Sensors: Performance Trade-Offs, Stability, and Benchmarking.

Surface and interface engineering has become a decisive factor in determining the performance and reliability of integrated photonic sensors. As photonic device architectures advance and geometric optimization strategies approach their fundamental performance limits, the nanoscale interface region where confined optical modes interact with the surrounding environment progressively becomes the dominant factor governing sensitivity, noise characteristics, and long-term operational stability. This review critically examines recent advances in these strategies applied to integrated photonic sensin

When complexity does not pay: benchmarking deep learning and ensemble methods for biomarker discovery.

The integration of multi-omics data holds great promise for identifying robust and clinically relevant biomarkers, yet the increasing complexity of computational methods raises questions about their practical utility. In this study, we present a comprehensive benchmarking framework that evaluates 27 feature selection strategies and 11 predictive models across three real-world disease cohorts: Alzheimer's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, and breast cancer. We compare traditional machine learning, ensemble-based methods, and state-of-the-art deep learning models in terms of predictive pe

BrainWideBench: Benchmarking large-scale pretraining and across-animal transfer in multi-region neural recordings.

Advances in large-scale neural recording have made it possible to collect data across many animals and distributed brain regions, raising the question of whether this scale can be exploited to learn general-purpose neural representations transferable across diverse downstream tasks. Yet, progress toward this goal has been limited by fragmented evaluation protocols and a narrow focus on individual task domains. Here, we present BrainWideBench, a benchmark for evaluating across-animal transfer on multi-region neural recordings, built on the International Brain Laboratory Brainwide Map dataset of
