Alcohol liver damage (ALD) is increasing worldwide among adolescents, along with binge drinking (BD). BD is an acute alcohol consumption pattern, strongly pro-oxidant in the liver, and may be associated with steatosis, the first step in ALD. Folic acid (FA), an antioxidant crucial for liver function, shows compromised hepatic stores after BD. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the hepatic lipid changes associated with BD-induced steatosis during adolescence in rats and to evaluate the efficacy of FA supplementation in preventing these alterations. Four groups of adolescent rats were used: c

Alcohol binge drinking is common among adolescents and may challenge the signalling systems that process affective stimuli, including calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) signalling. Here, we employed a rat model of adolescent binge drinking to evaluate reward-, social- and aversion-related behaviour, glucocorticoid output and CGRP levels in affect-related brain regions. As a potential rescue, the effect of the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol was explored. Adolescent male rats underwent the intermittent 20% alcohol two-bottle choice paradigm; at the binge day (BD) and the 24 h withdrawal day (W

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) is a serious risk factor for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and associated with more severe forms of the disorder. Thus, special attention to specific risk factors for BD adjacent to and during pregnancy is warranted.
OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine the role that maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may play in BD in the 12 months before pregnancy and during pregnancy in a sample of women with moderate to high socioeconomic status; and (2) to examine the sociodemographic correlates of BD before and during pregnancy within this sample.

Adolescents frequently engage in risky behaviours such as binge drinking. Binge drinking, in turn, perturbs neurodevelopment reinforcing reward seeking behaviour in adulthood. Current animal models are limited in their portrayal of this behaviour and the assessment of neuroimmune involvement (specifically the role of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)). Therefore, the aims of this project were to develop a more relevant animal model of adolescent alcohol exposure and to characterise its effects on TLR4 signalling and alcohol-related behaviours later life. Balb/c mice received a short (P22-P25), low d

IMPORTANCE: Relatively little is known about the prevalence of concerns with physique and eating disorders among males and their relation to subsequent adverse outcomes. A broader range of eating disorders needs to be defined to diagnose these illnesses appropriately in males.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether males with psychiatric symptoms related to disordered eating and concern about physique are more likely to become obese, to start using drugs, to consume alcohol frequently (binge drinking), or to develop high levels of depressive symptoms.

PURPOSE: To examine the role of both positive and negative styles of self-control, and gender-role stereotypes in binge eating and problem drinking.
METHOD: Participants were 428 adolescent boys and 555 girls from predominantly Anglo-Australian backgrounds who attended regional state schools in New South Wales, Australia. Students completed standardized questionnaires that assessed problem drinking, binge eating, self-control styles, and identification with gender-role stereotypes. ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests were conducted to examine differences among adolescents who reported problems in

Binge drinking is a relatively common pattern of alcohol use among youth with normative trajectories peaking in emerging and early adulthood. Frequent binge drinking is a critical risk factor not only for the development of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) but also for increased odds of alcohol-related injury and death and thus constitutes a significant public health concern. Changes in binge drinking across development are strongly associated with individual differences and changes in impulsive personality traits, which have been hypothesized as intermediate phenotypes associated with genetic ris

OBJECTIVE: Excessive alcohol consumption is a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. However, knowledge of the biological factors that influence ad libitum alcohol intake may be incomplete. Two large studies recently linked variants in the KLB locus with levels of alcohol intake in humans. KLB encodes β-klotho, co-receptor for the liver-derived hormone fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). In mice, FGF21 reduces alcohol intake, and human Fgf21 variants are enriched among heavy drinkers. Thus, the liver may limit alcohol consumption by secreting FGF21. However, whether full-length, act

BACKGROUND: Recently, procedures have been developed to model specific facets of human alcohol abuse disorders, including those that model excessive binge-like drinking (i.e., "drinking-in-the-dark," or DID procedures) and excessive dependence-like drinking (i.e., intermittent ethanol [EtOH] vapor exposure). Similar neuropeptide systems modulate excessive EtOH drinking stemming from both procedures, raising the possibility that both paradigms are actually modeling the same phenotypes and triggering the same central neuroplasticity. Therefore, the goal of this present project was to study the e

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of binge drinking among U.S. college students has decreased over the last two decades but remains high. We examined the extent to which state-level alcohol policies and drinking environments are associated with excessive and underage alcohol use among college students.
METHOD: Repeated cross-sectional surveys were administered to 902,486 college students ages 18-24 years from 591 4-year institutions in 47 states biannually from 2008 to 2019. Time-varying, state-level Alcohol Policy Scale (APS) scores and population-level binge drinking and alcohol consumption rates w

BACKGROUND: Condom use among young people in South Africa has declined in recent years and adolescent girls and young women continue to bear the highest incidence of HIV in the country. Young women who have dropped out of school may be more at risk because of traditional gender norms that create substantial power imbalances and a lack of power to negotiate condom use with their male partners, especially when using alcohol and other drugs.
METHODS: This study presents an analysis of baseline data provided by 500 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) from Cape Town communities between Novembe

Alcohol is the most commonly abused drug by young adults across North America. Although alcohol consumption itself incurs a risk of neurological damage, it is also a significant risk factor for traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI among young adults is described as a modern healthcare epidemic. The drastic changes occurring within their neurological networks put young adults at greater risk for developing long-term post-traumatic deficits. Contradictory findings have been indicated regarding the effects of alcohol consumption on TBI outcomes in adults, with some studies demonstrating detrimental

The relationship between being a victim of physical violence by an intimate partner and binge drinking (BD) is a poorly explored line of research, especially in men. To determine the association between being a victim of physical violence by an intimate partner and BD in men and women in Peru in 2020, a secondary analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using the Demographic Health Survey. BD was categorized according to the Center of Disease Control definition for men and women, based on the type and amount of alcoholic beverage ingested. Physical violence was based the report of being

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) during adolescence is related to cardiovascular alterations. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic properties, essential for correct heart function.
OBJECTIVES: To study the protective cardiovascular effects of selenium in adolescent rats exposed to a BD-like procedure.
METHODS: 32 adolescent male rats exposed to an intraperitoneally BD-like model or not, and supplemented with 0.4ppm of selenite or not, were divided into 4 groups: control, alcohol, control-selenium and alcohol-selenium. Blood pressure

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: Preclinical studies suggest learned immune system responses to alcohol cues and consumption may contribute to alcohol's pharmacodynamic properties and/or Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) pathogenesis. Mechanistically, these immune alterations may be associated with increased craving and alcohol consumption, both acutely and over time. We sought to characterize this relationship in a randomized, counter-balanced, crossover neuroimaging experiment which took place between June 2020-November 2021.
METHODS: Thirty-three binge drinkers (BD) and 31 non-binge, social drinkers (SD), m

Everyday experiences of racial discrimination are associated with negative mental health outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and alcohol misuse among ethnoracially minoritized adults. Less is known, however, about potential pathways in the association between racial discrimination and alcohol misuse. This study examines PTSD symptoms as a potential pathway in the association between everyday racial discrimination (ERD) and past 12-month binge drinking among ethnoracially minoritized emerging adults. Participants were emerging adults (N = 271), aged 18-29 years (M

BACKGROUND: Binge alcohol drinking is a dangerous pattern of consumption that can contribute to the development of more severe alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Importantly, the rate and severity of AUDs has historically differed between men and women, suggesting that there may be sex differences in the central mechanisms that modulate alcohol (ethanol) consumption. Corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is a centrally expressed neuropeptide that has been implicated in the modulation of binge-like ethanol intake, and emerging data highlight sex differences in central CRF systems.
