Measuring bioaccumulation of contaminants from field-collected sediment in freshwater organisms: a critical review of laboratory methods.

To be effective, decision-making frameworks require data from robust and reliable test methods. Using standard methods allows for more effective comparison between studies and application of data, and it reduces unnecessary duplication of efforts. Laboratory methods to assess the toxicity of sediment have been standardized and extensively used; however, procedures for measuring the bioaccumulation of contaminants from sediment into aquatic organisms need further standardization. Bioaccumulation methods using freshwater invertebrates and fish exposed to field-contaminated sediment were reviewed

Bioaccumulation, food web transfer, and tissue distribution of polonium-210 and lead-210 in Canadian freshwater ecosystems.

Understanding the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of naturally occurring radionuclides is essential for assessing ecological risk in freshwater systems. This study provides a large-scale assessment of polonium-210 (210Po) and lead-210 (210Pb) bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and tissue-specific biodistribution in freshwater food webs across Canada. Activity concentrations were measured in water and biota samples collected from multiple ecozones and land-use settings. Bioaccumulation factors were calculated to evaluate water-to-food web transfer, while trophic position patterns and 210Po:

Aquaculture-relevant florfenicol exposure causes hepatopancreatic bioaccumulation and metabolic-immune toxicity in the mud crab Scylla paramamosain.

The overuse of the broad-spectrum antibiotic florfenicol (FF) and its residues in coastal benthic environments pose toxicological risks to marine crustaceans. As an economically important benthic species, the mud crab is vulnerable to FF pollution stress, yet its toxicological responses and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic responses of the mud crab hepatopancreas following FF exposure. Healthy mud crabs were assigned to one control group and three FF exposure groups (5, 50, and 500 μg/L) and exposed for

Assessing a tailings-topsoil amendment approach for mine site restoration using earthworm bioaccumulation, stress biomarkers, and transcriptomics.

Global demand for raw materials is driving extensive mining projects with the consequent generation of mine waste, which contain potentially harmful elements including Pb and Zn. The rehabilitation of industrial residue sites and mine tailings represents an important environmental challenge for effective closure of tailings sites. While different rehabilitation strategies have been well studied based on plant performance and geochemical analyses, less is known about the impacts of mine tailings and their rehabilitation on soil infauna, including earthworms, despite their essential role in soil

Bioaccumulation of three typical antibiotics in the edible bivalve Tegillarca granosa: Potential mechanisms and human health implications.

Marine bivalves may be exposed to various terrigenous antibiotics, while empirical evidence supporting antibiotic accumulation and potential health risks remains limited. Thus, the accumulation of three typical antibiotics, ciprofloxacin (CIP), erythromycin (ERY), and oxytetracycline (OTC), in an edible bivalve species, blood clam (Tegillarca granosa), was measured in this study. Moreover, microbiological target hazard quotients (mTHQs) and dietary exposure doses of the human gut microbiota (DEGMs) were estimated to assess food safety risks to consumers. Furthermore, the detoxification process

ZnO nanoparticle-mediated cadmium adsorption induces bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, and apoptotic responses in Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegelii.

Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) and trace metals may co-occur in polluted coastal waters, and their interactions can alter trace metal behavior and toxicity in aquatic organisms. Here, we evaluated the finteraction between zinc oxide (ZnO) NP and cadmium (Cd) and their effects on Cd accumulation and physiological responses in Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegelii. Changes in zeta potential and Cd concentrations in the supernatant were analyzed to assess ZnO NP-Cd interactions. Fish were exposed to ZnO NP at 0.5 or 5 mg/L and Cd at 10 µg/L, either individually or in combination, for 5 days. Hepat

Influences on bioaccumulation and biota-sediment accumulation factors for methyl-mercury in High Arctic lake food webs.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in the fillets of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) differ widely among neighboring oligotrophic lakes on Cornwallis Island (Nunavut, Canada), but the reasons for these differences are poorly understood. Climate change is likely affecting Hg cycling in lakes, although studies report conflicting or mixed responses. We quantified Hg bioaccumulation (BAFs), biota-sediment accumulation (BSAFs), and trophic transfer factors (TTFs) for chironomids and Arctic char in Char, Small, Resolute, and Meretta Lakes to explain lake-to-lake differences. Simultaneously, we leveraged t

Osmoregulatory disruption and metal bioaccumulation in the estuarine fish Centropomus parallelus exposed to settleable atmospheric particulate matter.

Estuarine fishes experience marked environmental variability and rely on tightly regulated osmoregulatory mechanisms to maintain internal homeostasis. Settleable atmospheric particulate matter (SePM), a complex mixture of metals and metalloids, is an emerging stressor in aquatic systems and may interfere with regulatory processes. This study investigated the effects of SePM exposure on osmoregulatory homeostasis in the estuarine fish Centropomus parallelus. Fish were exposed for 96 h to either 0 g.L⁻¹ (control) or 1 g.L⁻¹ SePM, and key physiological endpoints associated with ion and water bala

Growth-Linked, Tissue-Specific Antioxidant Reprogramming During Natural Zn/Cu Bioaccumulation in the Pacific Oyster Magallana gigas.

Whether zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) bioaccumulation in the Pacific oyster (Magallana gigas) reflects toxicological stress or is an incidental consequence of growth remains unclear. We cultured three commercial triploid M. gigas stocks for approximately one year, sampling gill and hepatopancreas at the start and end of this period, when Zn/Cu burden was naturally low and high, respectively. Pooled samples from both time points were profiled by whole-transcriptome sequencing, enzyme activity and oxidative damage assays, qPCR validation, and protein-protein interaction network analysis. Behaviors of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine (6:2 FTAB) in wheat seedlings: Bioaccumulation, biotransformation and ecotoxicity.

As a new alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine (6:2 FTAB) has been currently used in industrial and consumer applications, which has been frequently detected in environment media. However, the behaviors of 6:2 FTAB in plants are still unclear. This study investigated the bioaccumulation, biotransformation and ecotoxicity of 6:2 FTAB in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) by hydroponic exposure. 6:2 FTAB was easily taken up by roots with the root concentration factor (RCF) as high as 94.8, but difficult to be acropetally translocated in the shoots

The Complex Interactions Between Sediment Geochemistry, Methylmercury Production, and Bioaccumulation in Intertidal Estuarine Ecosystems: A Focused Review.

Due to their natural geochemistry, intertidal estuarine ecosystems are vulnerable to bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxin that readily bioaccumulates in organisms. Determining MeHg concentrations in intertidal invertebrates at the base of the food web is crucial in determining MeHg exposure in higher trophic level organisms like fish and birds. The processes that govern the production of MeHg in coastal ecosystems are influenced by many geochemical factors including sulfur species, organic matter, and salinity. The interactions of these factors with mercury are complex, and a

Toxicokinetics and edible tissues-specific bioaccumulation of decabrominated diphenyl ethers (BDE-209) after exposure to the broilers.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), the primary constituent of a widely used flame retardant formulation, is often present in high levels in avian derived products and could be transferred to humans through consumption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the toxicokinetics and bioaccumulation patterns of BDE-209 in different tissues of broilers, which would benefit the evaluation of chicken product safety. Male broilers received a single oral administration of BDE-209 at 25 mg/kg.BW and then BDE-209 concentrations in the plasma, liver, leg muscle, breast muscle, and other tissues were

Standardized experimental model for cement dust exposure; tissue heavy metal bioaccumulation and pulmonary pathological changes in rats.

A controlled experimental model of exposure to aerosols particularly for cement dust was recently invented in a study from the laboratory that found high serum levels of heavy metals, decrease gastrointestinal motility, and altered hematological variables in cement dust exposed rats. However, reproducibility was not considered. This work aims at standardizing the model and investigating preliminary toxicological indicators. Thirty male rats used in this study were divided into 3 groups (n = 10). Group 1; control, while groups 2 and 3 were exposed to cement dust for 14 days and 28 days respecti

Terrestrial diet influences mercury bioaccumulation in zooplankton and macroinvertebrates in lakes with differing dissolved organic carbon concentrations.

Dietary uptake is a key step in conveying both toxic mercury (Hg; particularly as highly bioavailable methylmercury, MeHg) and essential dietary biochemicals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), across trophic levels within aquatic food webs. Using stable isotopes and fatty acids we evaluated the role of food sources in size-fractioned plankton and littoral macroinvertebrates for the bioaccumulation of total Hg and MeHg in six oligotrophic and one mesotrophic Swedish lakes with differing concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We found that the consumption of both algal and t

Patterns of total mercury and methylmercury bioaccumulation in Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) along the West Antarctic Peninsula.

We examined mercury (Hg) accumulation in juvenile and adult subpopulations of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) collected west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Samples were collected along a northern cross-shelf transect beginning near Anvers Island and farther south near the sea ice edge in the austral summers of 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Regardless of geographical position, mean concentrations of total Hg and methylmercury (MeHg), the form of Hg that biomagnifies in marine food webs, were significantly higher in juvenile than adult krill in all years. In 2013, juvenile Antarctic krill collect

Comparison of mercury and methylmercury bioaccumulation in earthworms (Bimastus parvus) native to landfill-leachate-contaminated forest soil.

Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation was explored in the Bimastus parvus species of earthworm (B. parvus) native to the leachate-contaminated forest soils around a Hg-polluted traditional landfill in Japan. General soil properties and concentrations of THg and MeHg in forest soils and in B. parvus were determined. The results indicated that the average THg concentrations in B. parvus and in forest soils in the leachate-contaminated sites were 10.21 and 14.90 times higher than those in the reference sites, respectively, whereas similar average MeHg concentrations were ob

Experimental dosing of wetlands with coagulants removes mercury from surface water and decreases mercury bioaccumulation in fish.

Mercury pollution is widespread globally, and strategies for managing mercury contamination in aquatic environments are necessary. We tested whether coagulation with metal-based salts could remove mercury from wetland surface waters and decrease mercury bioaccumulation in fish. In a complete randomized block design, we constructed nine experimental wetlands in California's Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, stocked them with mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), and then continuously applied agricultural drainage water that was either untreated (control), or treated with polyaluminum chloride or ferric
