Gamma-Aminobutyric acid profiling (GABA) and standardization of in-vitro regeneration protocol in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) genotypes.

This present study focused on assessing Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in seventy kharif tomato genotypes to highlight its importance in neurotransmission. The experiment was performed at ICAR- Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, during 2021-2022. Analysis revealed that most genotypes exhibited a decline in GABA content from the green to turning stages. However, the yellow and orange fruited genotypes K-69 and K-70 consistently maintained stable GABA levels throughout ripening, underscoring their potential for biofortification. In this experiment, efforts were also made t

Natural Variation in Vitamin B1 and Vitamin B6 Contents in Rice Germplasm.

Insufficient dietary intake of micronutrients contributes to the onset of deficiencies termed hidden hunger-a global health problem affecting approximately 2 billion people. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) are essential micronutrients because of their roles as enzymatic cofactors in all organisms. Metabolic engineering attempts to biofortify rice endosperm-a poor source of several micronutrients leading to deficiencies when consumed monotonously-have led to only minimal improvements in vitamin B1 and B6 contents. To determine if rice germplasm could be exploited for biofortif

Iron, zinc, and protein bioavailability proxy measures of meals prepared with nutritionally enhanced beans and maize.

Nutritionally enhanced beans (NEB) with more Fe and Zn than conventional beans (CB) and nutritionally enhanced maize (NEM) with more tryptophan and lysine than conventional maize (CM) were developed as part of a crop-biofortification strategy to improve human nutrition. Proxy measures were used to assess Fe and Zn bioavailability and protein digestibility of a bean recipe (fríjol sancochado) and a maize-milk recipe (mazamorra) prepared with enhanced or conventional crops in Colombia. Fe concentration was similar in the cooked NEB and CB and in NEM and CM (P> or = 0.05); in vitro Fe dialyzabili

L-DOPA induces iron accumulation in roots of Ipomoea aquatica and Arabidopsis thaliana in a pH-dependent manner.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anemia worldwide, particularly in countries with predominant plant-based diets. Plants constitute the main source of dietary iron. Increasing their iron concentration could reduce the occurrence of anemia. The water spinach Ipomoea aquatica is consumed as a vegetable throughout Asia and tolerates high iron concentrations making it an attractive candidate for iron biofortification. L-DOPA is an allelopathic molecule secreted by some legumes. L-DOPA can trigger the expression of Fe deficiency-inducible genes, and could potentially be used as a

Zinc and Provitamin A Biofortified Maize Genotypes Exhibited Potent to Reduce Hidden-Hunger in Nepal.

Zinc deficiency affects one third of the population worldwide, and vitamin A deficiency is a prevalent public health issue in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-Asia, including Nepal. Crop biofortification is the sustainable solution to these health-related problems, thus we conducted two different field trials in an alpha lattice design to identify zinc and provitamin A biofortified maize genotypes consistent and competitive in performance over the contrasting seasons (Season 1: 18 February to 6 July 2020 and Season 2: 31 August to 1 February, 2020/21). In our study, the performance of introduced m

Antioxidant response and carboxylate metabolism in Brassica rapa exposed to different external Zn, Ca, and Mg supply.

Zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) malnutrition are common deficiencies in many developed and developing countries, resulting in a widespread health problem. Biofortification of food crops is an agricultural strategy that can be used to increase the levels of these elements in the edible portions of crops. Deficiency or toxicity of these cations in soils reduces plant growth, crop yield, and the quality of plant foodstuff. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of external Zn, Ca, and Mg supply on accumulation and distribution of this elements as well as antioxidant respo

Transcriptional-metabolic networks in beta-carotene-enriched potato tubers: the long and winding road to the Golden phenotype.

Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in a large number of countries. Biofortification of major staple crops (wheat [Triticum aestivum], rice [Oryza sativa], maize [Zea mays], and potato [Solanum tuberosum]) with β-carotene has the potential to alleviate this nutritional problem. Previously, we engineered transgenic "Golden" potato tubers overexpressing three bacterial genes for β-carotene synthesis (CrtB, CrtI, and CrtY, encoding phytoene synthase, phytoene desaturase, and lycopene β-cyclase, respectively) and accumulating the highest amount of β-carotene in the four aforementioned

Unveiling genetic loci and natural alleles for seed iron accumulation in adzuki bean via genome-wide association study.

BACKGROUND: Iron is an essential micronutrient for both plant growth and human health and iron deficiency affects over 30% of the global population. Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), an iron-rich legume, serves as a strategic dietary iron source to combat global iron deficiency anemia. Despite its nutritional significance, the genetic basis of iron accumulation in legumes remains unexplored. RESULTS: This study addresses this gap by performing the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) targeting seed iron content in a diverse panel of 320 adzuki accessions (220 cultivated, 100 wild/semi-wild)

Transcriptomic and targeted metabolomic insights into carotenoid-mediated color formation in sorghum grains.

INTRODUCTION: Sorghum is a major staple crop in semi-arid regions; however, its generally low grain carotenoid content limits its potential contribution to alleviating vitamin A deficiency. Elucidating the regulatory mechanisms underlying carotenoid accumulation is therefore essential for the nutritional improvement of sorghum. METHODS: Five sorghum varieties with distinct grain colors (white, gray, yellow, red, and black) were analyzed using integrated targeted carotenoid metabolomic and transcriptomic approaches to characterize carotenoid composition and its molecular regulation. RESULTS A

Precision dietary strategies for enriching animal-derived foods with antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.

Functional food demand has driven research into dietary strategies that enhance the nutritional value of animal-derived foods. This narrative review (2010-2025; 225 studies) evaluates supplementation with selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), vitamin E (Vit E) and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) to enrich livestock-derived meat, milk and eggs, proposing a precision enrichment framework. Organic and some novel forms of Se and Zn generally show greater efficacy than inorganic sources in many studies, largely due to differences in bioavailability and metabolic handling. Potent synergies were

Natural folates from biofortified tomato and synthetic 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate display equivalent bioavailability in a murine model.

Folate deficiency is a global health problem related to neural tube defects, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and cancer. Considering that folic acid (FA) supply through industrialized foods is the most successful intervention, limitations exist for its complete implementation worldwide. Biofortification of plant foods, on the other hand, could be implemented in poor areas as a complementary alternative. A biofortified tomato fruit that accumulates high levels of folates was previously developed. In this study, we evaluated short-term folate bioavailability in rats infused with this folate-bi

Perceptions and Acceptability of a Low Phytate: Iron Molar Ratio Biofortified Bean and Sweet Potato Dish Among Pregnant Women in Rural Uganda.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) disproportionately affects pregnant women who reside in low-income countries because they predominantly consume staple legumes and tubers such as conventional common beans (CCBs) and white-fleshed sweet potatoes (WFSPs). Such staples are either low in iron or rich in iron absorption inhibitors such as phytates. To fight IDA, a high-iron-biofortified common bean (IBCB) was introduced in Uganda. However, there is limited knowledge about its acceptability among pregnant women. This experimental crossover study determined the sensory acceptability of a low

Expressing CaCCS encoding capsanthin/capsorubin synthase in tomato increases fruit provitamin A content and yield.

We developed a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) biofortification strategy by engineering the simultaneous accumulation of β-carotene (provitamin A) and the pepper (Capsicum annuum)-specific ketocarotenoids capsanthin and capsorubin. Capsanthin/capsorubin synthase (CaCCS), an enzyme related to lycopene β-cyclase (LCYB) known for β-carotene biosynthesis, was investigated for its in vivo role in ripening pepper fruit (C. annuum). Silencing CaCCS by virus-induced gene silencing reduced flux from lycopene to β-carotene (the β-branch), altering carotenoid profiles and expression of carotenogenic genes.

Assessing the carotenoid profiles and allelic diversity of yellow maize inbred lines adapted to mid-altitude subhumid maize agroecology in Ethiopia.

Biofortification of provitamin A in maize is an attractive and sustainable remedy to the problem of vitamin A deficiency in developing countries. The utilization of molecular markers represents a promising avenue to facilitate the development of provitamin A (PVA)-enriched maize varieties. We screened 752 diverse tropical yellow/orange maize lines using kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) makers to validate the use of KASP markers in PVA maize breeding. To this end, a total of 161 yellow/orange inbred lines, selected from among the 752 lines, were evaluated for their endosperm PVA and other
