A century and a half of research on the evolution of insect flight.

The gill and paranotal lobe theories of insect wing evolution were both proposed in the 1870s. For most of the 20th century, the paranotal lobe theory was more widely accepted, probably due to the fundamentally terrestrial tracheal respiratory system; in the 1970s, some researchers advocated for an elaborated gill ("pleural appendage") theory. Lacking transition fossils, neither theory could be definitively rejected. Winged insects are abundant in the fossil record from the mid-Carboniferous, but insect fossils are vanishingly rare earlier, and all earlier fossils are from primitively wingless

Evolution of Venomous Cartilaginous and Ray-Finned Fishes.

Venom and its associated delivery systems have evolved in numerous animal groups ranging from jellyfishes to spiders, lizards, shrews, and the male platypus. Building off new data and previously published anatomical and molecular studies, we explore the evolution of and variation within venomous fishes. We show the results of the first multi-locus, ordinal-level phylogenetic analysis of cartilaginous (Chondrichthyes) and ray-finned (Actinopterygii) fishes that hypothesizes 18 independent evolutions of this specialization. Ancestral-states reconstruction indicates that among the 2386-2962 extan

Sleep in amphibians and reptiles: a review and a preliminary analysis of evolutionary patterns.

Despite the ubiquitous nature of sleep, its functions remain a mystery. In an attempt to address this, many researchers have studied behavioural and electrophysiological phenomena associated with sleep in a diversity of animals. The great majority of vertebrates and invertebrates display a phase of immobility that could be considered as a sort of sleep. Terrestrial mammals and birds, both homeotherms, show two sleep states with distinct behavioural and electrophysiological features. However, whether these features have evolved independently in each clade or were inherited from a common ancesto

The natural immunity to evolutionary atavistic endotoxin for human cancer.

We propose a new theory of the immunological control of cancer corresponding to the hypothesis that the specific natural immunity to evolutionary atavistic endotoxin has a potential role in human cancer prevention. The results of our studies have shown that IgMNAE, i.e. endogenous or spontaneous IgM class antibodies to enterobacterial lipopolysaccharide molecules (lipid A), control the immune mechanisms responsible for the internal medium stability not only against the damaging impact of the carcinogenic factors, but also against the malignant transformation of its own degenerated cells. Dental and Mandibular Morphologies of Arboroharamiya (Haramiyida, Mammalia): A Comparison with Other Haramiyidans and Megaconus and Implications for Mammalian Evolution.

BACKGROUND: Two recent studies published in the same issue of Nature reached conflicting conclusions regarding the phylogeny of early mammals: One places the clade containing haramiyidans and multituberculates within the Mammalia and the other separates haramiyidans from multituberculates and places the former outside of the Mammalia. These two contrasting results require that the minimally oldest divergence time of the Mammalia was within the Late Triassic or the Middle Jurassic, respectively. Morphological descriptions of the species named in the two papers were brief, and no comparisons bet

Proliferation and significance of clinically relevant β-lactamases.

Inactivation of β-lactam antibiotics by β-lactamases in bacterial infections is associated with some of the most serious infectious disease issues that are currently encountered. The evolution of unique β-lactamases has resulted in more than 1,300 distinct enzymes that have been identified in natural clinical isolates. Of these enzymes, the most deleterious β-lactamases are the extended-spectrum β-lactamases, or ESBLs, that hydrolyze most penicillins and cephalosporins, and the carbapenemases that may inactivate all β-lactam classes of drugs. The most prominent ESBLs worldwide are the CTX-M-14

Shedding of genes that interfere with the pathogenic lifestyle: the Shigella model.

Pathoadaptive mutations are evolutionary events leading to the silencing of specific anti-virulence loci. This reshapes the core genome of a novel pathogen, adapts it to the host and boosts its harmful potential. A paradigmatic case is the emergence of Shigella, the causative agent of bacillary dysentery, from its innocuous Escherichia coli ancestor. Here we summarize current views on how pathoadaptation has allowed Shigella to progressively increase its virulence. In this context, modification of the polyamine pattern emerges as a crucial step towards full expression of the virulence program

Morphological evolution through integration: a quantitative study of cranial integration in Homo, Pan, Gorilla and Pongo.

Morphological integration refers to coordinated variation among traits that are closely related in development and/or function. Patterns of integration can offer important insight into the structural relationship between phenotypic units, providing a framework to address questions about phenotypic evolvability and constraints. Integrative features of the primate cranium have recently become a popular subject of study. However, an important question that still remains under-investigated is: what is the pattern of cranial shape integration among closely related hominoids? To address this questio

Do associated microbial abundances impact marine demosponge pumping rates and tissue densities?

The evolution of marine demosponges has led to two basic life strategies: one involving close associations with large and diverse communities of microorganisms, termed high microbial abundance (HMA) species, and one that is essentially devoid of associated microorganisms, termed low microbial abundance (LMA) species. This dichotomy has previously been suggested to correlate with morphological differences, with HMA species having a denser mesohyl and a more complex aquiferous systems composed of longer and narrower water canals that should necessitate slower seawater filtration rates. We measur

Evolution of plant pathogenicity in Streptomyces.

Among the multitude of soil-inhabiting, saprophytic Streptomyces species are a growing number of plant pathogens that cause economically important diseases, including potato scab. Streptomyces scabies is the dominant pathogenic species worldwide, but is only one of many that cause very similar disease symptoms on plants. Molecular genetic analysis is beginning to identify the mechanisms used by plant pathogenic species to manipulate their hosts. The nitrated dipeptide phytotoxin, thaxtomin, inhibits cellulose biosynthesis in expanding plant tissues, stimulates Ca2+ spiking, and causes cell dea

Evolution of development in nematodes related to C. elegans.

The knowledge about C. elegans provides a paradigm for comparative studies. Nematodes are very attractive in evolutionary developmental biology given the species richness of the phylum and the easiness with which several of these species can be cultured under laboratory conditions. Embryonic, gonad, vulva and male tail development were studied and compared in nematodes of five different families, providing a detailed picture of evolutionary changes in development. In particular, vulva development has been studied in great detail and substantial differences in the cellular, genetic and molecula

[The phylogenesis of equine teeth].

Phylogenetic research on the teeth of equidae beginning with dagger Hyracotherium ('Eohippus') will be summarized, subdivided into its components, analysed in a new way and finally interpreted according to several theories of evolution. In this context, specific cells (ameloblasts, odontoblasts, cementoblasts) are discussed and valued according to Preuss (1987) as active carriers of the evolution of teeth.

Evolution and development--the nematode vulva as a case study.

To understand how morphological characters change during evolution, we need insight into the evolution of developmental processes. Comparative developmental approaches that make use of our fundamental understanding of development in certain model organisms have been initiated for different animal systems and flowering plants. Nematodes provide a useful experimental system with which to investigate the genetic and molecular alterations underlying evolutionary changes of cell fate specification in development, by comparing different species to the genetic model system Caenorhabditis elegans. Phylogeny and classification, origins, and evolution of host associations of lice.

Lice are highly successful ectoparasites. Most species of mammals and birds are infested by at least 1 but up to 6 species of lice. Current opinion is that lice evolved from free-living Psocoptera (booklice, barklice and psocids). It is generally agreed that there are 4 main groups of lice: Anoplura, Amblycera, Ischnocera and Rhyncophthirina. In contrast, there is no agreement on the phylogenetic relationships of these groups and their classification. In particular, there is much debate over the validity of the taxon Mallophaga, which is almost certainly paraphyletic. For many years the sister

Homology of retractile filaments of vampire squid.

The axial filament nerves of Vampyroteuthis infernalis are joined to two separate parts of the brain. One branch of the nerve, apparently efferent, arises from the anterior portion of the middle subesophageal mass, and the other, apparently afferent. enters the ventral magnocellular lobe. Since this innervation is entirely different from that of the arms, the filaments can no longer be considered homologous with the arms. The validity and primitive nature of the order Vampyromorpha, therefore, needs to be reexamined.
