Multi-emissive metal nanoclusters: luminescence origin, tailoring strategies, and biomedical applications.

Multicolor (multi-emissive) luminescent materials are attracting increasing attention because, compared with single-emission systems, they can deliver two or more emission bands under the same or different excitation conditions, enabling ratiometric readouts that suppress environmental and instrumental interference and improve quantitative reliability in complex bioenvironments. Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters (MNCs), consisting of several to hundreds of metal atoms, provide a particularly powerful single-component platform because their ultrasmall, molecule-like electronic structures and

A self-powered hydration-monitoring and drug-delivery skin patch for closed-loop treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that typically manifests in infancy and is characterized by dry, irritated skin. Here, we propose a self-powered hydration-monitoring and drug-delivery skin patch for closed-loop treatment of atopic dermatitis. The patch is composed of piezoelectric generator, hydration sensing unit, microneedle treatment module and flexible circuit. The piezoelectric PZT generator can achieve self-powering by harvesting mechanical energy from patient activities, allowing for long-term work of the system without external power sources. The hydration se

From Gelatin to GelMA: Versatility, Challenges, and Biomedical Applications of GelMA Hydrogels.

Gelatin is a natural biopolymer derived from collagen and is widely employed in biomedical applications because of its biocompatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity, water solubility, and intrinsic thermo-responsive gelation behavior. Owing to the presence of bioactive motifs and its ability to form hydrogels under mild conditions, gelatin has emerged as a promising material for tissue engineering, drug delivery, and in vitro modeling. However, the poor mechanical stability and rapid dissolution of native gelatin under physiological conditions limit its direct use in advanced biomedical sys

Volumetric 3D printing of a fluoropolymer and closed-loop chemical recycling of its fluorinated content.

Fluorinated polymers are indispensable in fields such as microfluidics, electronics, and biomedical engineering. Yet, their chemical stability leads to long-term environmental persistence, rendering end-of-life management essential. In parallel, their insolubility and lack of melt behavior complicate fabrication into complex geometries, restricting their use in 3D printing. Here, a fluorinated photoresist is introduced that enables tomographic volumetric 3D printing with closed-loop chemical recycling of its fluorinated content. The photoresist-based on an alkene-functionalized fluorinated dio

Potential of organ-on-a-chip in advancing synthetic extracellular matrix technology for bone tissue engineering in dentistry (Review).

Bone tissue engineering (BTE) is a cutting-edge approach within biomedical sciences, especially in regenerative medicine, addressing key challenges such as organ transplantation and complex tissue repair. At the core of BTE is the development of biomimetic scaffolds to replicate native tissue environments. However, conventional models often fall short in accurately mimicking the complexity of human tissue microenvironments. Organ-on-a-chip (OOAC) technology offers a transformative alternative. These microscale systems combine microfluidics, biomaterials and cell cultures to emulate the structu

Polymer Scaffolds for Biomedical Applications in Peripheral Nerve Reconstruction.

The nervous system is a significant part of the human body, and peripheral nerve injury caused by trauma can cause various functional disorders. When the broken end defect is large and cannot be repaired by direct suture, small gap sutures of nerve conduits can effectively replace nerve transplantation and avoid the side effect of donor area disorders. There are many choices for nerve conduits, and natural materials and synthetic polymers have their advantages. Among them, the nerve scaffold should meet the requirements of good degradability, biocompatibility, promoting axon growth, supporting

Engineering inkjet bioprinting processes toward translational therapies.

Bioprinting is the assembly of three-dimensional (3D) tissue constructs by layering cell-laden biomaterials using additive manufacturing techniques, offering great potential for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Such a process can be performed with high resolution and control by personalized or commercially available inkjet printers. However, bioprinting's clinical translation is significantly limited due to process engineering challenges. Upstream challenges include synthesis, cellular incorporation, and functionalization of "bioinks," and extrusion of print geometries. Downstream

Technology You Can Swallow: Moving Beyond Wearable Sensors, Researchers Are Creating Ingestible Ones.

Around 6 p.m. each evening, the streets of Boston's suburbs come alive with the physically fit and those aspiring to be. They are runners, bikers, walkers, and scooter riders of all different body shapes and ages who would seem to have little in common except one thing-an electronic band wrapped around their wrist. For many of these people, it's hard to imagine life without the daily nagging from a personal health device to meet their daily prescript of 10,000 steps.

The Great Harmony in Translational Medicine: Biomaterials and Stem Cells.

Thanks to novel approaches and emerging technologies, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have made a great effort to regenerate damaged tissue or organ with no donor needed. The approaches involve two fundamental components: bioengineered scaffolds and stem cells. Bioengineered scaffolds which can also be enriched with bioactive molecules such as cytokines, growth factors, and so on have been fabricated using a wide range of synthetically or naturally derived biodegradable and biocompatible polymers. These scaffolds should support cell attachment, migration, proliferation, and/or dif

Energy of gait in below-knee casts with different soles.

This study aims to provide some guidelines for the use of soles on below-knee walking casts. Whole-body energy changes during the single limb support phase of the gait cycle have been quantified in twenty volunteer subjects fitted with below-knee casts and each wearing one of five soles in turn. Simple gait analysis was carried out with a Kistler force plate and an Apple II microcomputer, the data were sampled at 50 Hz. Three commercial soles and two 'home made' ones were used; it was generally found that the commercial products produced a more energy efficient gait. Some recommendations are i

Static weight-bearing patterns of below-knee amputees using patellar-tendon-bearing prostheses.

While the weight-bearing patterns under human feet during dynamic conditions (i.e. walking or running) have been investigated by many scientists, only a few studies have been reported on such patterns during erect standing posture. This paper describes an investigation where a system composed of strain gauge load cells has been employed to study the static weight-bearing patterns of a group fo below-knee amputees using patellar-tendon-bearing prostheses, and of a matching group of normal persons. Experimental data were analysed to recognize the static weight-bearing patterns; it has been found

A 3D polydimethylsiloxane microhourglass-shaped channel array made by reflowing photoresist structures for engineering a blood capillary network.

This paper describes an innovative yet straightforward fabrication technique to create three-dimensional microstructures with controllable tapered geometries by combining conventional photolithography and thermal reflow of photoresist. Positive photoresist-based microchannel structures with varying width-to-length ratios were reflowed after their fabrication to generate three-dimensional funnel structures with varying curvatures. A polydimethylsiloxane hourglass-shaped microchannel array was next cast on these photoresist structures, and primary human lung microvascular endothelial cells were

Photoacoustic Imaging of Nanoparticle Transport in the Kidneys at High Temporal Resolution.

Noninvasive monitoring of kidney elimination of engineered nanoparticles at high temporal and spatial resolution will not only significantly advance our fundamental understandings of nephrology on the nanoscale, but also aid in the early detection of kidney disease, which affects more than 10 % of the worldwide population. Taking advantage of strong NIR absorption of the well-defined Au25 (SG)18 nanocluster, photoacoustic (PA) imaging was used to visualize its transport in situ through the aorta to the renal parenchyma and its subsequent filtration into the renal pelvis at a temporal resolutio

A Review on Microengineering of Epithelial Barriers for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research.

Epithelial tissue forms a barrier around the human body and visceral organs, providing protection, permeation, sensation, and secretion. It is vital for our sustenance as it protects the tissue from harm and injury by restricting the entry of foreign bodies inside. Furthermore, it is a strong barrier to drugs, nutrients, and other essential deliverables. This layer also houses a large consortium of microbes, which thrive in tandem with human tissue, providing several health benefits. Moreover, the complex interplay of the microbiome with the barrier tissue is poorly understood. Therefore, repl
