Molecular detection of Coxiella burnetii in raw meat samples collected from different abattoirs in districts Kasur and Lahore of Punjab, Pakistan.

Coxiella burnetii is the zoonotic pathogen that causes Q fever; it is widespread globally. Livestock animals are its main reservoir, and infected animals shed C. burnetii in their birth products, feces, vaginal mucus, urine, tissues, and food obtained from them, i.e., milk and meat. There were previously very few reports on the prevalence of C. burnetii in raw meat. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of C.burnetii and its molecular characterization in raw ruminant meat from the Kasur and Lahore districts in Punjab, Pakistan, as this has not been reported so far. In this study, 200 me

Effect of breeding method and season on pregnancy rate and embryonic and fetal losses in lactating Nili-Ravi buffaloes.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of breeding method and season on pregnancy rate and cumulative embryonic and fetal losses in Nili-Ravi buffalo. Estrus detection was performed twice a day by teaser buffalo bull for 1 hour each. A 2 × 2 factorial design was used to address the breeding method and season. Buffaloes (n = 130) exhibiting estrus were randomly assigned to be bred either in peak breeding season (PBS; n = 80) or low breeding season (LBS; n = 50). Within each season, buffaloes were divided to receive either natural service (NS; n = 65) or artificial insemination (AI; n

Application of centromeric fluorescence in situ hybridization probes for embryological and cell studies-A practical approach to validate chromosome stability in Bovinae.

BACKGROUND: Advances in reproductive and cellular biotechnology have significantly enhanced the ability to study, conserve, and manipulate species within the Bovinae family, including domestic cattle and the endangered European bison (wisent). Central to the success of such technologies, including in vitro fertilization, somatic cell nuclear transfer, and the culture of pluripotent stem cells (PSCs), is the chromosome stability of cultured cells and embryos. RESULTS: Here, we present the design and application of a specific centromere Cot-1 DNA probe for fluorescence in situ hybridization (FI

Prevalence and Implications of Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli in Farm and Wild Ruminants.

Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a food-borne pathogen that causes human gastrointestinal infections across the globe, leading to kidney failure or even death in severe cases. E. coli are commensal members of humans and animals' (cattle, bison, and pigs) guts, however, may acquire Shiga-toxin-encoded phages. This acquisition or colonization by STEC may lead to dysbiosis in the intestinal microbial community of the host. Wildlife and livestock animals can be asymptomatically colonized by STEC, leading to pathogen shedding and transmission. Furthermore, there has been a steady up

Seroprevalence of malignant catarrhal fever in cattle and sheep from South Brazil.

Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF) is caused by a group of gammaherpesviruses in the genus Macavirus. The virus is transmitted via nasal shedding from adapted hosts, such as sheep, which do not develop the disease, to non-adapted hosts such as cattle, pigs, bison, and deer, which can develop an often-fatal form of the disease. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available to control MCF, and the resulting losses significantly affect livestock industries worldwide. To assess the seroprevalence of MCF in southern Brazil, blood samples were collected from sheep and cattle reared simu

Reconstructing Late Pleistocene paleoclimate at the scale of human behavior: an example from the Neandertal occupation of La Ferrassie (France).

Exploring the role of changing climates in human evolution is currently impeded by a scarcity of climatic information at the same temporal scale as the human behaviors documented in archaeological sites. This is mainly caused by high uncertainties in the chronometric dates used to correlate long-term climatic records with archaeological deposits. One solution is to generate climatic data directly from archaeological materials representing human behavior. Here we use oxygen isotope measurements of Bos/Bison tooth enamel to reconstruct summer and winter temperatures in the Late Pleistocene when

Gammaherpesvirus Infections in Cattle in Europe.

The genus Macavirus, subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae, comprises ungulate viruses that infect domestic and wild ruminants and swine. They cause asymptomatic latent infections in reservoir hosts and malignant catarrhal fever in susceptible species. Lung, spleen, bronchial lymph node, and tongue were collected from 448 cattle (348 necropsied, 100 slaughtered) in Switzerland, United Kingdom, Finland, Belgium, and Germany to determine their infection with bovine herpesvirus-6 (BoHV-6) and gammaherpesviruses of other ruminants, i.e., ovine herpesvirus-1 and -2, caprine herpesvirus-2, and bison lymphotr

A study on the epidemiology of brucellosis in bovine population of peri-urban and rural areas of district Multan, southern Punjab, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by a bacterial pathogen belonging to the genus Brucella. It is one of the most frequent bacterial zoonoses globally but unfortunately, it is still considered as a neglected disease in the developing world. Keeping in view, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence and risk determinants of brucellosis in large ruminants of peri-urban and rural areas of district Multan-Pakistan. For this purpose, blood samples (n = 490) were collected from the cattle (n = 245) and buffalo (n = 245) population of the study area and subjected to preli

Effects of propolis-loaded nanoliposomes fortification in extender on buffalo semen cryopreservation.

Buffalo sperm is sensitive to cryoinjuries, thus improving sperm cryoresistance is a critical approach for wide spreading the assisted reproductive technologies in buffalo. The intention of this work was to assess the effect of propolis-loaded in nanoliposomes (PRNL) supplementation of semen extender on semen quality, antioxidant status and some apoptotic genes of cryopreserved buffalo semen. PRNL were prepared using cholesterol (Chol) as well as soybean lecithin and their physicochemical properties were characterized. Egyptian buffalo bulls (4-6 years) were involved, and the semen samples wer

Mycoplasma bovis pneumonia in marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) from a natural reserve of Argentina.

Mycoplasma bovis is a well-known respiratory pathogen in cattle and has also been reported in bison, white-tailed deer and free-ranging pronghorn. Here, we describe an outbreak of pulmonary mycoplasmosis in marsh deer within a wildlife reserve in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The affected marsh deer were part of an extensive grazing system, cohabiting with Pampas deer and separated by a fence from cattle and red deer. Over a five-month period, a cumulative incidence and mortality rate of 21.15% (11/52) resulted, with all affected animals found dead. Overall, six animals presented caseonecr

Body size modulates the extent of seasonal diet switching by large mammalian herbivores in Yellowstone National Park.

Prevailing theories about animal foraging behaviours and the food webs they occupy offer divergent predictions about whether seasonally limited food availability promotes dietary diversification or specialization. Emphasis on how animals compete for food predominates in work on the foraging ecology of large mammalian herbivores, whereas emphasis on how the diversity of available foods generally constrains dietary opportunity predominates work on entire food webs. Reconciling predictions about what promotes dietary diversification is challenging because species' different body sizes and mobilit

Comparative analysis of tuberculin and defined antigen skin tests for detection of bovine tuberculosis in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in Haryana state, India.

BACKGROUND: Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic disease that results from infection with any member of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Infected animals are typically diagnosed with tuberculin-based intradermal skin tests according to World Organization of Animal Health which are presently in use. However, tuberculin is not suitable for use in BCG-vaccinated animals due to a high rate of false-positive reactions. Peptide-based defined skin test (DST) antigens have been identified using antigens (ESAT-6, CFP-10 and Rv3615c) which are absent from BCG, but their performance in buffaloes

Development of a new quantification method of Sarcocystis cruzi through detection of the acetyl-CoA synthetase gene.

Sarcocystis cruzi is a member of the genus Sarcocystis, infecting bovine animals such as cattle and bison as intermediate hosts, and canids such as dogs and raccoon dogs as definitive hosts. Acute sarcocystosis of S. cruzi causes occasional symptoms in cattle, including weight loss, reduced milk production, abortions, and death, and similar to other Sarcocystis species can potentially cause food poisoning in humans when raw or undercooked infected cattle meat is consumed. Despite these issues, genetic information on S. cruzi is scarce, and there is no specific quantitative method for the detec

Cryptosporidium infections in terrestrial ungulates with focus on livestock: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium spp. are causative agents of gastrointestinal diseases in a wide variety of vertebrate hosts. Mortality resulting from the disease is low in livestock, although severe cryptosporidiosis has been associated with fatality in young animals. METHODS: The goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to review the prevalence and molecular data on Cryptosporidium infections in selected terrestrial domestic and wild ungulates of the families Bovidae (bison, buffalo, cattle, goat, impala, mouflon sheep, sheep, yak), Cervidae (red deer, roe deer, white-tailed deer),

Cross-Reactivity of Neutralizing Antibodies among Malignant Catarrhal Fever Viruses.

Some members of the gamma herpesvirus genus Macavirus are maintained in nature as subclinical infections in well-adapted ungulate hosts. Transmission of these viruses to poorly adapted hosts, such as American bison and cattle, can result in the frequently fatal disease malignant catarrhal fever (MCF). Based on phylogenetic analysis, the MCF viruses (MCFV) cluster into two subgroups corresponding to the reservoir hosts' subfamilies: Alcelaphinae/Hippotraginae and Caprinae. Antibody cross-reactivity among MCFVs has been demonstrated using techniques such as enzyme linked immunosorbent and immuno

The efficacy and safety of alphacypermethrin as a pour-on treatment for water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) infested with Haematopinus tuberculatus (Phthiraptera: Haematopinidae).

The sucking louse Haematopinus tuberculatus (Burmeister 1839) is an ectoparasite of buffaloes, cattle, camels, and American bison. Alphacypermethrin (ACYP) is a pyrethroid insecticide commonly used to control arthropods of veterinary and public health interest. Therapeutics, such as antiparasitic compounds, is often administered to buffaloes based on dosage and intervals recommended for cattle because very few drugs have buffalo-specific label indications. A trial was conducted on 20 louse-infested buffaloes at a farm to assess the efficacy and safety of ACYP pour-on, at the manufacturer's rec

Immunohistochemical study of experimental malignant catarrhal fever in rabbits.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is an often-fatal lymphoproliferative disease of a variety of ungulates that occurs worldwide. It is caused by either of the highly related but distinct gammaherpesviruses alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 (AlHV-1, wildebeest reservoir) or ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2, sheep reservoir). MCF in rabbits is an excellent model as it closely resembles the disease in susceptible ungulates that include cattle, deer and bison. In this study, newly available and previously characterized monoclonal antibodies specific for rabbit leucocyte differentiation molecules were used to per
