HYPOTHESIS: Intracochlear pressures (PIC) and stapes velocity (Vstap) elicited by bilaterally placed bone-anchored hearing devices (BAHD) will be systematically modulated by imposed interaural time (ITD) and level differences (ILD), demonstrating the potential for users of bilateral BAHD to access these binaural cues.
BACKGROUND: BAHD are traditionally implanted unilaterally under the assumption that transcranial cross-talk limits interaural differences. Recent studies have demonstrated improvements in binaural and spatial performance with bilateral BAHD; however, objective measures of binaur

BACKGROUND: Postoperative hearing improvement is measured as Air-Bone gap changes. Changes in bone conduction threasholds as a results of otosurgery is also discussed.
AIM: We discuss factors that have influence on bone conduction threasholds changes in individuals operated due to chronic otitis media.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prospective analysis involves the patients operated on middle ear due to chronic infection in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Jagiellonian University of Krakow in the years 2010-2013. 457 otosurgeries were performed in this period of time.

OBJECTIVES: We present indications and clinical outcomes of fitting an 8.5-mm abutment for bone conduction devices.
METHODS: In 39 cases with a follow-up time of more than 12 months after fitting of an 8.5-mm abutment, the preintervention and postintervention courses were retrospectively evaluated. The outcome measures were indications for fitting and complications during the preintervention and postintervention courses (local skin reaction, skin level, revision surgery, and implant loss).
RESULTS: Soft tissue overgrowth was the most frequent reason (31 of 39 cases) for fitting the 8.5-mm ab

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) is an important rehabilitation alternative for patients who have conductive or mixed hearing loss. However, these devices use a percutaneous and bone-anchored implant that has some drawbacks reported. A transcutaneous bone conduction implant system (BCI) is proposed as an alternative to the percutaneous system because it leaves the skin intact. The BCI transmits the signal to a permanently implanted transducer with an induction loop system through the intact skin. The aim of this study was to compare the electroacoustic performance of th

The effect of preoperative bone conduction (BC) threshold levels on the results of stapedectomy was evaluated in 378 adult patients with otosclerosis. The mean follow-up period was 8.8 years. Both short-term and long-term postoperative hearing levels were found to be significantly dependent on preoperative BC levels. Only 2 of 31 patients (7%) with preoperative BC thresholds > 40 dB had postoperative hearing levels of 30 dB or better. However, hearing still improved by > or = 21 dB as often in patients with elevated preoperative BC thresholds as in patients with normal BC thresholds. These fin

The conventional bone conduction audiometry does not allow an objective assessment of hearing in patients with otospongiosis. We evaluated a new method of direct bone conduction audiometry with the stimulator applied to the promontory intraoperatively. A comparison of conventional and direct bone conduction audiometry thresholds was made in 100 patients in various stages of otospongiosis before stapedectomy. A significant correlation between hearing thresholds obtained by both methods was observed for all frequencies tested (500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz). The direct bone conduction method was a

PURPOSE: Bone conduction hearing devices (BCDs) that deliver sound across the skin (i.e., transcutaneous) are suitable for some individuals who have conductive or mixed hearing losses. Prescriptive targets for percutaneous devices are available, for example, from the Desired Sensation Level-Bone Conduction Hearing Device (DSL-BCD) algorithm. These targets, however, may require modification for use with transcutaneous BCDs. The current study investigated three key variables that may inform target modification: (a) comparison of thresholds measured using an audiometric bone conduction (BC) trans

The aim of this study was to assess the conductive loss component (CLC) by brainstem electric response audiometry. A bone-conducted noise was used to mask out the response to a conventional air-conducted click stimulus. The difference between the levels of the click and the noise is defined as the masked threshold to noise ratio (MTNR). This MTNR was determined for 21 normal ears (MTNR = -13 +/- 5 dB). The increase in MTNR compared to this normative value is a measure of the CLC. For 10 ears with an artificially induced purely conductive loss, the increase in MTNR is in good agreement with the

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the surgical and postoperative clinical outcomes of punch-only and linear incision techniques for implantation of the Ponto® bone conduction implant. Methods: Surgical and follow-up data were collected from 101 patients: 46 treated with Minimally Invasive Ponto® Surgery (MIPS) and 55 with the linear incision technique (LT). The analysis focused on: (1) the surgical procedure, including operative time and intraoperative complications; (2) the healing process; and (3) long-term implant-site outcomes, including implant loss. Results: Median operati

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the appearance of percutaneous bone conduction devices (perBCDs) or active transcutaneous bone conduction devices (atBCDs) is preferred by BCD-users and non-users. The second aim is to examine the degree to which the appearance of a device matters in comparison to other BCD traits, and whether certain participant characteristics predict this.
METHODS: An online questionnaire was designed and administered to BCD-users and non-users (i.e., persons with no experience using a BCD). Pair-wise comparisons showing pictures of the latest generation perBCD and atBCD sou

OBJECTIVES: A variety of bone conduction hearing devices (BCHD) exist for the treatment of conductive hearing loss including percutaneous, passive transcutaneous, and active transcutaneous devices. The purpose of this study was to evaluate trends in selection of pediatric BCHD according to demographic and socioeconomic factors.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on all patients who underwent BCHD placement at a tertiary academic pediatric healthcare system between January 2019 to April 2023. Audiology discussed all BCHD options during the consultation, with families deciding

Bone conduction (BC) is an important modality of hearing. It enables us to differentiate conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, perceive sounds despite a disabled middle ear, and listen to conversation and music privately without blocking the ear canal. Yet the mechanism underlying BC is not fully understood mainly because the bone-conducted vibrations in the skull simultaneously stimulate the outer ear, the middle ear, and the cochlea. The nature of the parallel stimulation on those interconnected parts makes it difficult to contemplate the dynamics in each compartment and the influences

The prevalence of unilateral deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) among patients with hearing impairments ranges from 7.2% to 15.0%, indicating a relatively significant proportion. However, these individuals often overlook their hearing loss, resulting in delayed or inadequate treatment. This oversight can lead to a lack of binaural summation and squelch effect, as well as the head shadow effect, which can significantly impact their speech recognition and sound localization abilities, especially in noisy environments.Recently, a groundbreaking Sound Bite™ Pinyin® Bone Conduction Hea

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Conserved specimens do not decay and therefore permit long-term experiments thereby overcoming limited access to fresh (frozen) temporal bones for studies on middle ear mechanics. We used a Thiel conservation method which is mainly based on a watery solution of salts. In contrast to pure Formalin, Thiel conservation aims to preserve the mechanical proprieties of human tissue. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Thiel conservation on bone conduction in the same specimen before and after conservation.
METHODS: Nine ears of five defrosted whole heads were stimu
