Behavioural distinction between strategic control and spatial realignment during visuomotor adaptation in a viewing window task.

We must frequently adapt our movements in order to successfully perform motor tasks. These visuomotor adaptations can occur with or without our awareness and so, have generally been described by two mechanisms: strategic control and spatial realignment. Strategic control is a conscious modification used when discordance between an intended and actual movement is observed. Spatial realignment is an unconscious recalibration in response to subtle differences between an intended and efferent movement. Traditional methods of investigating visuomotor adaptation often involve simplistic, repetitive

Individualized Cognitive Effort to Failure Does Not Affect Subsequent Strenuous Physical Performance.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between cognitive tasks and physical performance has garnered significant attention, with evidence suggesting that cognitive effort before exercise may impair physical performance. However, recent findings challenge the robustness of this effect, necessitating a reassessment of the mechanisms linking cognitive load to physical performance. This study introduces a novel approach to address methodological limitations, emphasizing individualized cognitive task difficulty and duration. Using techniques such as temporal experience tracing and psychophysiological monit

Online dating: predictors of problematic tinder use.

BACKGROUND: Geolocation apps have radically transformed dating practices around the world, with profound sociocultural implications. Few studies, however, have explored their addictive potential or factors that are associated with their misuse. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess the level of problematic Tinder use (PTU) in an adult sample, using a machine learning algorithm to determine, among 29 relevant variables, the most important predictors of PTU. METHODS: 1,387 users of Tinder (18-74 years-old; male = 50.3%; female = 49.1%) completed an online questionnaire, and a machine le

Predicting U.S. county opioid poisoning mortality from multi-modal social media and psychological self-report data.

Opioid poisoning mortality is a substantial public health crisis in the United States, with opioids involved in approximately 75% of the nearly 1 million drug related deaths since 1999. Research suggests that the epidemic is driven by both over-prescribing and social and psychological determinants such as economic stability, hopelessness, and isolation. Hindering this research is a lack of measurements of these social and psychological constructs at fine-grained spatial and temporal resolutions. To address this issue, we use a multi-modal data set consisting of natural language from Twitter, p

Clinical profile of responders to buprenorphine as a substitution treatment in heroin addicts: results of a multicenter study of 73 patients.

In France, high-dosage buprenorphine (HDB) is the main substitution treatment for narcotic addiction. Few data have been published concerning clinical factors predicting a good response to this treatment in a daily practice. A hospital-based multicenter clinical research program (PHRC) was undertaken in heroin-addicted patients, diagnosed according to DSM-III-R, to detect clinical criteria susceptible of predicting a good response to HDB administered during a 3-month treatment period. At the inclusion time in the study, a diagnostic structured interview (DIGS) was performed, and the Addiction

Two subtypes of compulsive sexual behavior disorder.

Models explaining addictive behaviors such as the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model emphasize the importance of reinforcement mechanisms for developing and maintaining these behaviors, including compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) as well as personal characteristics as vulnerability factors. This study aimed to determine whether there are CSBD subtypes distinguished by reinforcement sensitivity. We hypothesize that one subtype is sensitive to positive reinforcement (C+subtype) and one is sensitive to negative reinforcement (Ȼ-subtype). We calculated a clust

Changes in Maternal Substance Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal stress and mental health challenges have increased since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic began. Experts are concerned about elevated substance use given its well-known association with negative emotions, but existing research has not examined substance use among mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a crucial next step to inform policy and service supports given links between maternal substance use and adverse family experiences. METHOD: Data were collected online between April 14 and 28, 2020. A total of 508 mothers (mean age = 34.8 years, SD = 5.

A qualitative assessment of discharge against medical advice among patients hospitalized for injection-related bacterial infections in West Virginia.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) and other systemic bacterial infections is increasing, and people who inject drugs (PWID) have higher rates of discharge against medical advice (AMA) for these infections than patients whose infections are not injection-related. In this study, we characterize factors that contribute to AMA hospital discharge among PWID. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with twenty PWID hospitalized with serious injection-related bacterial infections in West Virginia. Participants completed a brief survey and in-depth qualitative interview. I

Reasons for Tobacco Use and Perceived Tobacco-Related Health Risks in an Inpatient Psychiatric Population.

People with mental illness (MI) have a disproportionate tobacco-related disease burden and mortality. Tobacco-use rates in people with MI are nearly twice that of the general population. Reasons for tobacco-use in this population may be a result of diminished tobacco-related disease risk perceptions. The purpose of this study was to examine the reasons for tobacco-use and perceived tobacco-related health risks among psychiatric inpatients. A correlational design was employed to survey a convenient sample of 137 patients from a psychiatric facility in central Kentucky. Information obtained from

Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), Personality Traits, and Iterative Decompression Sickness. Retrospective Analysis of 209 Cases.

Introduction: There is a need to evaluate the influence of risk factors such as patency of foramen ovale (PFO) or "daredevil" psychological profile on contra-indication policy after a decompression sickness (DCS). Methods: By crossing information obtained from Belgian Hyperbaric Centers, DAN Emergency Hotline, the press, and Internet diving forums, it was possible to be accountable for the majority if not all DCS, which have occurred in Belgium from January 1993 to June 2013. From the available 594 records we excluded all cases with tentative diagnosis, medullary DCS or unreliability of report

Correlates and predictors of loneliness in older-adults: a review of quantitative results informed by qualitative insights.

BACKGROUND: Older persons are particularly vulnerable to loneliness because of common age-related changes and losses. This paper reviews predictors of loneliness in the older population as described in the current literature and a small qualitative study. METHODS: Peer-reviewed journal articles were identified from psycINFO, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar from 2000-2012. Overall, 38 articles were reviewed. Two focus groups were conducted asking older participants about the causes of loneliness. RESULTS: Variables significantly associated with loneliness in older adults were: female gender, non-

To better understand why people use new psychoactive substances in prison - outcomes of polish, qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) have become increasingly prevalent in prison environments, serving both social and emotional functions. While research has extensively examined NPS use in the general population, little is known about the specific motivations driving their use among incarcerated individuals. Given the restrictive nature of prison life, substance use motivations may differ from those outside correctional facilities. This study aimed to identify the key motives behind NPS use among prisoners in Poland. RESULTS: 6 Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with prisoners and 32 i

A psychometric network perspective of a brief measure of fear of monkeypox.

Mpox symptoms and strategies implemented to control its spread may be associated with fear, anxiety, anger, boredom, exhaustion, social isolation, and stigma. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Monkeypox Fear Scale (MFS) in 421 Peruvian adults from the Piura region, based on a psychometric network model. Additionally, this study assessed the centrality, stability, and accuracy of the symptom network associated with fear of Mpox. The participants were selected through non-probability sampling, with a mean age of 26.4 years (SD = 9.3), and the majority were women (23

Research note: Expert opinions of feather sucking and licking behavior in meat chicken breeder birds.

Feather sucking, or feather licking, has been reported anecdotally by employees in the Australian meat chicken breeder industry, but scarcely in the scientific literature. Consequently, the causes and implications of this behavior in meat chicken breeding chickens is relatively unknown. We surveyed 17 industry experts to generate hypotheses about feather sucking behavior. We aimed to understand the frequency and when it occurs, and attempted to understand what may cause an "outbreak". The recruitment of participants was intentionally biased towards Australian perspectives; only 5 of the 17 par

Breast cancer survivors' experiences of barriers and facilitators to lymphedema self-management behaviors: a theory-based qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Lifelong self-management plays a critical role in the prevention and management of lymphedema among breast cancer survivors. However, adherence to lymphedema self-management behaviors has remained suboptimal. Hence, we adopted a theory-informed method to elucidate the facilitators and barriers of lymphedema self-management for breast cancer survivors. METHODS: In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted between August and October 2022 in the lymphedema nursing clinic of a tertiary cancer hospital. The maximum variation sampling technique was used to ensure a diverse sample. Th
