The brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) or, more appropriately, the auditory brain stem response (ABR) is a series of 5-7, vertex-positive, time-locked electric events. Auditory brain stem evoked responses to air-conducted and bone-conducted signals were recorded in subjects with normal hearing and in subjects with conductive hearing loss. In normal subjects, the latency to wave V for bone-conducted signals was approximately 0.5 ms longer than the latency for air-conducted signals delivered at the same sensation level. In conductive hearing loss, the separation of the latency-intensity functions for air conduction and bone conduction (corrected for the 0.5-ms delay) provided a valid estimate of the behavioral air-bone gap in the 1,000- to 4,000-Hz region.

In the continuing search for methods to diagnose acoustic neuromas at an early stage, we have applied the auditory brain stem response examination to 27 patients with surgically verified acoustic neuromas. It is confirmed that the main indicator of retrocochlear versus cochlear disease is the interaural latency difference of the Jewett5 wave, the IT5. Women exhibit significantly lower latency values to J5 than men, approximately 0.25 msec. Age also has some influence, so that the J5 latency tends to increase with age, but in this investigation the trend did not reach statistical significance.

OBJECTIVE: There is no standard of care for patients with progredient brain stem gliomas. Therefore, we report about clinical, radiological and metabolic response to anti-angiogenic treatment with bevacizumab in a series of 3 patients with gliomas involving the brain stem.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three patients with histologically confirmed gliomas involving the brain stem were treated with bevacizumab for tumor progression.
