Blue Lymphangitis of the Breast after Breast Cancer: Case Report.

Carcinomatous lymphangitis accounts for 5% of all skin metastases, but blue lymphangitis of the breast has never been described. We report a case of blue lymphangitis of the breast in a patient 11 years after treatment for ipsilateral breast cancer that was in full remission. Breast examination and imaging showed no other abnormalities. Skin biopsy revealed a carcinomatous-pigmented infiltration corresponding to melanoma metastasis, which helped highlight a primitive right flank injury. This case report emphasizes that a full body exam should always be performed with unusual presentation of br

Breast metastasis from cutaneous malignant melanoma mimicking a breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Breast metastases are very uncommon, either from solid tumors or malignant melanoma. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 42-year-old woman with a history of cutaneous melanoma of the shoulder excised 21 years ago. She presented with a palpable lump in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. Ultrasound demonstrated a solid mass within a cystic lesion. A core biopsy was taken and first histology reported a poorly differentiated primary breast cancer suspected to be triple negative. MRI detected a satellite lesion in the same breast, a focus of suspected enhancement in the

Pattern of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence after breast-conserving therapy.

PURPOSE: To analyze the incidence and prognostic factors of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) after breast-conserving therapy (BCT) in a large, population-based, single-center study with long-term follow-up. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We analyzed 3595 cases in which BCT was performed in 3824 women with stage I or II breast cancer. The incidence of IBTR was analyzed over time and was based on IBTR as first event. RESULTS: The 15-year local relapse-free survival was 90.9%. The hazard estimates for IBTR showed a time course with 2 peaks, the first at approximately 5 years and the second, t

Ultrasound screening of contralateral breast after surgery for breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether supplemental screening ultrasound (US) to mammography could improve cancer detection rate of the contralateral breast in patients with a personal history of breast cancer and dense breasts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During a one-year study period, 1314 screening patients with a personal history of breast cancer and dense breasts simultaneously underwent mammography and breast US. BI-RADS categories were given for mammography or US-detected lesions in the contralateral breast. The reference standard was histology and/or 1-year imaging follow-up, and the cancer rate

[Successful treatment of multiple breast tumors with breast-conserving surgery].

We report a case in which we were able to treat multiple tumors in the right breast with breast-conserving surgery. The patient was a 60-year-old woman in whom mammography revealed grouped round calcifications and distortion in the right breast. The tumor was not palpable. Ultrasonography revealed 3 tumors in the patient's right breast. One tumor, 14.5 mm in diameter, was located in the AC area of her right breast. Vacuum-assisted core-needle biopsy was performed on this tumor, and histopathological examination revealed invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. The tumor was estrogen receptor (

Lactating breast abscess: a rare presentation of adenosquamous breast carcinoma.

We report the case of a 33-year-old lactating woman who presented with a 10-cm breast abscess. Biopsy of the abscess wall revealed a poorly differentiated invasive ductal carcinoma. The patient had no family history of breast cancer or other risk factors for breast cancer. The disease was considered to be a large noninflammatory invasive breast cancer, for which the patient received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, breast-conserving surgery using axillary dissection (the patient did not consent to a mastectomy), and postoperative radiotherapy. Final histologic examination revealed a 4-cm, triple nega

Breast fine-needle aspiration malondialdehyde deoxyguanosine adduct in breast cancer.

This study has analysed the generation of 3-(2-deoxy-β-D-erythro-pentafuranosyl)pyrimido[1,2-α]purin-10(3H)-one deoxyguanosine adduct [M₁dG], a biomarker of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, in breast fine-needle aspirate samples of 22 patients with breast cancer, at different clinical stages, in respect to 13 controls. The multivariate analysis show that M(1)dG adduct was higher in cases than in controls (Mean Ratio (MR) = 5.26, 95% CI = 3.16-8.77). Increased M₁dG was observed in women with a tumour grade 3 and a pathological diameter 2 (MR = 7.61, 95% CI = 3.91-14.80 and MR = 5.75, 95

Birth weight, breast cancer susceptibility loci, and breast cancer risk.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable evidence that birth weight is positively associated with breast cancer risk, and seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been conclusively associated with this risk. We have hypothesized that breast cancer susceptibility loci may have a greater influence on breast cancer risk among women with higher birth weight, who are expected to have a larger pool of mammary stem cells that are susceptible to malignant transformation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the context of a nationwide, population-based case-control study in Sweden, we retrieved recorded birth

[Immunohistochemistry in breast pathology: differential diagnosis of epithelial breast lesions].

Proliferative epithelial breast lesions include a wide variety of benign hyperplastic and noninvasive neoplastic lesions, as well as invasive carcinomas. Mammographically these lesions may show microcalcifications, architectural distortions or mass lesions. The task of the pathologist begins with a preoperative diagnosis by means of minimally invasive biopsy. His diagnosis forms the basis for not only the radiological-pathological correlation diagnosis, but also for the management of benign proliferative breast disease lesions, as well as therapeutic decisions in the case of malignant lesions.

Accessory breast tissue in axilla masquerading as breast cancer recurrence.

Ectopic or accessory breast tissue is most commonly located in the axilla, though it may be present anywhere along the milk line. Development is hormone dependent, similar to normal breast tissue. These lesions do not warrant any intervention unless they produce discomfort, thus their identification and distinction from other breast pathologies, both benign and malignant, is essential. We report a case with locally advanced breast cancer who presented with an ipsilateral axillary mass following surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Subsequent evaluation with excision biopsy showed duct ecta

Benign breast disease and breast cancer risk: morphology and beyond.

Evidence from clinical follow-up studies has indicated that there is a relationship between the presence of histologically proven benign breast disease and breast cancer risk and that the level of risk varies according to the histologic category of benign breast disease. In particular, proliferative lesions without atypia are associated with a 1.5- to 2-fold increase in risk, whereas atypical hyperplasias are associated with a fourfold to fivefold increase in breast cancer risk. A number of clinical factors appear to modify the risk associated with these lesions, including the time since biops

Family history of breast cancer, age and benign breast disease.

A major risk factor for breast cancer is having a first-degree family history of the disease. Benign breast disease (BBD), particularly atypical hyperplasia, is also associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. However, the relationship between family history of breast cancer and BBD is unclear. From 1989 through 1997, 80,995 participants in the Nurses' Health Study II were followed; 16,849 reported a first diagnosis of BBD. Pathology slides were reviewed for 1,465 women who reported having a tissue biopsy, and these were classified as nonproliferative BBD, proliferative BBD without aty

Palpable breast cancers are inherently different from nonpalpable breast cancers.

BACKGROUND: We examined the clinicopathologic profile of T1 cancers to determine whether palpable cancers are different from nonpalpable cancers. METHODS: A prospective database was reviewed. Palpable T1 cancers were compared with nonpalpable T1 cancers. Initial significance was determined by chi2 analysis. Factors found to be significant were then reanalyzed. controlling for tumor size by logistic or linear regression, as appropriate. RESULTS: Of 1263 T1 cancers treated between 1981 and 2000, 857 (68%) were palpable and 401 (32%) were nonpalpable. Palpability correlated with pathologic tumo

Breast conservation after induction chemotherapy for locally advanced breast cancer.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NC) has been shown to reduce primary breast tumor size in 80 to 90 per cent of patients. This study prospectively evaluated a series of women with locally advanced operable breast cancer treated with NC with the purpose of identifying eligibility for breast conservation surgery (BC) and clinical parameters predictive of chemotherapy response. Patients with stage IIB and III primary operable breast cancer were evaluated prospectively between 1/1/91 and 12/31/95. Thirty-two patients received NC consisting of three cycles of 5-fluorouracil, doxirubicin, and cyclophospham

Breast-duct endoscopy to study stages of cancerous breast disease.

BACKGROUND: In breast-cancer research, we lack reproducible non-invasive access to breast tissue. Breast cancer is thought to start in the lining of the milk duct or lobule. We have had no direct access to this area other than in tissue removed surgically or by fine-needle aspiration. Our objective was to explore an intraductal approach to studying breast cancer and precancerous changes by duct cannulation and endoscopy. METHODS: In this pilot study, women in a university hospital were asked to participate. Nine patients with previously diagnosed ductal carcinoma-in-situ (DCIS) or invasive br

Silicone gel breast implants, breast cancer and connective tissue disorders.

Recent worldwide media speculation that silicone gel-filled breast implants may be linked to an increased incidence of breast and other cancers, and connective tissue disease (particularly systemic sclerosis) has caused concern to the medical profession and public alike. Until carefully controlled studies have been performed to prove the safety of these implants, the US Food and Drug Administration has restricted their use to research and breast reconstruction. Research has so far failed to prove a causative relationship between silicone implants and cancer or connective tissue disorders.
