Breast density changes in a randomized controlled trial evaluating bazedoxifene/conjugated estrogens.

OBJECTIVE: Breast density is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. This study assessed changes in mammographic breast density after 24 months of treatment with bazedoxifene (BZA)/conjugated estrogens (CE) in postmenopausal women. METHODS: This was an ancillary study in a subset of nonhysterectomized postmenopausal women enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and active-controlled phase 3 study. Treatments evaluated were BZA 20 mg/CE 0.45 mg, BZA 20 mg/CE 0.625 mg, raloxifene 60 mg, and placebo. Women who were eligible for participation in the ancillary study

Mammographic density and estimation of breast cancer risk in intermediate risk population.

It is not clear to what extent mammographic density represents a risk factor for breast cancer among women with moderate risk for disease. We conducted a population-based study to estimate the independent effect of breast density on breast cancer risk and to evaluate the potential of breast density as a marker of risk in an intermediate risk population. From November 2006 to April 2009, data that included American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) breast density categories and risk information were collected on 52,752 women aged 50-69 years without previou

Age-specific trends in mammographic density: the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study.

Mammographic density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer, yet few studies have evaluated density trends, and associated factors, over time. The authors retrieved and digitized mammograms (> or =1 per woman) imaged in 1990-2003 to evaluate percent density (PD) in the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family cohort. Multivariable-adjusted, mixed-effects, repeated-measures models incorporating a natural cubic spline provided estimates of nonlinear trends in PD with age and were used to examine association with covariates. Overall, 5,698 mammograms from 1,689 women with covariate information were digi

Assessment of salivary cadmium levels and breast density in the Marin Women's Study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine if salivary cadmium (Cd) levels had any association with breast density, hoping to establish a less invasive cost-effective method of stratifying Cd burden as an environmental breast cancer risk factor. METHODS: Salivary Cd levels were quantified from the Marin Women's Study, a Marin County, California population composite. Volumetric compositional breast density (BDsxa ) data were measured by single x-ray absorptiometry techniques. Digital screening mammography was performed by the San Francisco Mammography Registry. Radiologists reviewed mammograms and assi

Correlation of RANK and RANKL with mammographic density in primary breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: The receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B (RANK) and its ligand (RANKL) have been shown to promote proliferation of the breast and breast carcinogenesis. The objective of this analysis was to investigate whether tumor-specific RANK and RANKL expression in patients with primary breast cancer is associated with high percentage mammographic density (PMD), which is a known breast cancer risk factor. METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining of RANK and RANKL was performed in tissue microarrays (TMAs) from primary breast cancer samples of the Bavarian Breast Cancer Cases and Controls (

Chemotherapy effects on bone mineral density and microstructure in women with breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy involves the administration of steroids to prevent nausea and vomiting; however, its effect on bone microstructure remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microstructure associated with chemotherapy using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in women with early breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective single-arm observational study included non-osteoporotic, postmenopausal women with breast cancer. The patients underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), HR-

Evaluation of the association of endometriosis and mammographic breast density, a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common benign but painful gynecologic condition. Studies suggest that the risk of some types of malignancies such as breast cancer is higher in women with endometriosis. Mammographic breast density (MBD) is known as an important predictor for breast cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between endometriosis and MBD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 370 women over 40 years of age. Laparoscopic surgery was carried out for the diagnosis of endometriosis. MBD was classified into four categories according to th

Breast Density Notification: A Systematic Review of the Impact on Primary Care Practitioners.

Background: In the last decade, there has been an unprecedented amount of advocacy and attention surrounding the issue of breast density (BD) in relation to mammography screening. It is largely unknown what impact notifying women of their BD has had on clinical practice for PCPs. This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence from existing studies to understand the impact of BD notification on primary care practitioners' (PCPs) knowledge, attitudes, and practice implications. Methods: Empirical studies were identified through relevant database searches (database inception to May 2020). Tw

A review of the influence of mammographic density on breast cancer clinical and pathological phenotype.

PURPOSE: It is well established that high mammographic density (MD), when adjusted for age and body mass index, is one of the strongest known risk factors for breast cancer (BC), and also associates with higher incidence of interval cancers in screening due to the masking of early mammographic abnormalities. Increasing research is being undertaken to determine the underlying histological and biochemical determinants of MD and their consequences for BC pathogenesis, anticipating that improved mechanistic insights may lead to novel preventative or treatment interventions. At the same time, techn

[Tumoral vascular density in breast tumors and their effect on recurrence-free survival].

Angiogenesis quantitation of 106 patients with primary breast cancer and 35 patients with adenofibroma of the breast was compared and examined to its prognostic relevance for five-years disease-free survival in breast cancer patients. Immunocytochemical staining for Factor VIII-related antigen was performed to outline vascular endothelium. We found a significant higher vessel density in breast cancer patients who experienced recurrence (17.4) than in those with no recurrence (9.4) or with adenofibroma (8.7) [p < 0.0001]. The probability of five-years recurrence-free survival for patients with

Breast density knowledge and willingness to delay treatment for pre-operative breast cancer imaging among women with a personal history of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Following a breast cancer diagnosis, it is uncertain whether women's breast density knowledge influences their willingness to undergo pre-operative imaging to detect additional cancer in their breasts. We evaluated women's breast density knowledge and their willingness to delay treatment for pre-operative testing. METHODS: We surveyed women identified in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium aged ≥ 18 years, with first breast cancer diagnosed within the prior 6-18 months, who had at least one breast density measurement within the 5 years prior to their diagnosis. We assessed w

Lifestyle, Behavioral, and Dietary Risk Factors in Relation to Mammographic Breast Density in Women at High Risk for Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women at high risk for breast cancer due to genetics or risk factor profiles are counseled to adopt lifestyle, behavioral, and dietary changes to help reduce their risk. These recommendations are based on studies of women at average risk, so their effectiveness in high-risk women is unclear. METHODS: We evaluated the impact of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and intake of folate and carotenoids on mammographic breast density-a proxy for breast cancer risk-among 387 high-risk women. Exposures were self-reported on questionnaires. Breast dense area, nondense area, a
