Features of the speech processing network in post- and prelingually deaf cochlear implant users.

The onset of hearing loss can lead to altered brain structure and functions. However, hearing restoration may also result in distinct cortical reorganization. A differential pattern of functional remodeling was observed between post- and prelingual cochlear implant users, but it remains unclear how these speech processing networks are reorganized after cochlear implantation. To explore the impact of language acquisition and hearing restoration on speech perception in cochlear implant users, we conducted assessments of brain activation, functional connectivity, and graph theory-based analysis u

Pilot-RCT Finds No Evidence for Modulation of Neuronal Networks of Auditory Hallucinations by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is used as treatment for auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). The theory behind the treatment is that tDCS increases activity in prefrontal cognitive control areas, which are assumed to be hypoactive, and simultaneously decreases activity in temporal speech perception areas, which are assumed to be hyperactive during AVH. We tested this hypofrontal/hypertemporal reversal theory by investigating anatomical, neurotransmitter, brain activity, and network connectivity changes over the course of tDCS treatment. METHODS: A double-blind, ra

Processing nouns and verbs in the left frontal cortex: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Neuropsychological and neurophysiological studies suggest that the production of verbs in speech depends on cortical regions in the left frontal lobe. However, the precise topography of these regions, and their functional roles in verb production, remains matters of debate. In an earlier study with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), we showed that stimulation to the left anterior midfrontal gyrus disrupted verb production, but not noun production, in a task that required subjects to perform simple morphological alternations. This result raises a number of questions: for examp

Benzodiazepine receptor imaging with iomazenil SPECT in aphasic patients with cerebral infarction.

To investigate the relationship between prognosis of aphasia and neuronal damage in the cerebral cortex, we evaluated the distribution of central-type benzodiazepine receptor (BZR) binding in post-stroke aphasics with [123I]iomazenil and SPECT. We performed iomazenil SPECT in six aphasic patients (aged from 45 to 75 years; all right-handed) with unilateral left cerebral infarction. Three patients showed signs of Broca's aphasia and the other three Wernicke's aphasia. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) imaging was performed with [123I]iodoamphetamine (IMP). The regions of interest (ROIs) on both images

Acute prenatal ethanol exposure and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone messenger RNA expression in the fetal mouse brain.

Ethanol exposure during critical periods of development results in alterations of central nervous system morphology and function. In this study, the effects of acute ethanol exposure on the number of neurons expressing luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) messenger RNA (mRNA) has been analyzed. Also, the expression of LHRH mRNA in the diagonal band of Broca/preoptic area (DBB/POA) was determined. Pregnant C57BL/6J mice were intubated with two doses of a 25% solution of ethanol or water (2.9 g/kg body weight) 4 hr apart on gestation day 7 (G7), G10, or G11. Animals were killed on G18, a

[Magneto-encephalographic (MEG) brain recordings during traumatic memory recall in women with post-traumatic stress disorder: A pilot study].

AIM OF THE STUDY: The experiment studied the effects of a short duration exposure to traumatic memories using magneto-encephalography (MEG). PATIENTS: Nine right-handed DSM-4 PTSD patients were recruited from a unit for anxiety disorders and an organisation supporting victims of violence. In order to have a homogeneous sample, we included only women who suffered from civilian PTSD. Exclusion criteria were co-morbid major medical illness, metallic dental prostheses that would interfere in the magnetic measurement, and current drug treatment. All participants were free from neurological disease

Translation direction and word familiarity in word translation: an fNIRS study of intermediate Japanese learners of English.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have examined the neural bases of word translation based on the revised hierarchical model (RHM). However, the findings reported thus far, mostly focusing on advanced or elementary second-language (L2) learners, have been diverse and often inconsistent. Thus, to explore possible neural bases for translation asymmetry, there is a distinct need to examine word translations by intermediate L2 learners. METHODS: We examined differences in cortical activation patterns during L1 (first language)-to-L2 and L2-to-L1word translation for high and low word familiarity in inter

Connectivity Gradient in the Human Left Inferior Frontal Gyrus: Intraoperative Cortico-Cortical Evoked Potential Study.

In the dual-stream model of language processing, the exact connectivity of the ventral stream to the anterior temporal lobe remains elusive. To investigate the connectivity between the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the lateral part of the temporal and parietal lobes, we integrated spatiotemporal profiles of cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) recorded intraoperatively in 14 patients who had undergone surgical resection for a brain tumor or epileptic focus. Four-dimensional visualization of the combined CCEP data showed that the pars opercularis (Broca's area) is connected to the post

Neuromodulation of Right Auditory Cortex Selectively Increases Activation in Speech-Related Brain Areas in Brainstem Auditory Agnosia.

Auditory agnosia is an inability to make sense of sound that cannot be explained by deficits in low-level hearing. In view of recent promising results in the area of neurorehabilitation of language disorders after stroke, we examined the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in a young woman with general auditory agnosia caused by traumatic injury to the left inferior colliculus. Specifically, we studied activations to sound embedded in a block design using functional magnetic resonance imaging before and after application of anodal tDCS to the right auditory cortex. Before

Brain activation modulated by the comprehension of normal and pseudo-word sentences of different processing demands: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Recent data from lesion and brain imaging studies have questioned the well-established assumption of a close functional-anatomic link between syntax and Broca's area and semantics and Wernicke's area. In the present study we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neuroanatomical correlates of semantic and syntactic functions and possible interdependencies between the related brain systems. In a completely crossed design we varied syntactic processing demands (easy vs difficult to process word order sequences) and the meaningfulness of sentences (real- vs pseudo-wo

Combining fMRI and MEG increases the reliability of presurgical language localization: a clinical study on the difference between and congruence of both modalities.

To avoid neurological impairment during surgery near language-related eloquent brain areas, we performed presurgical functional brain mapping with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) in 172 patients using language tasks. For MEG localizations, we used either a moving equivalent-current dipole fit or a current-density reconstruction using a minimum variance beamformer with a spatial filter algorithm. We localized the Wernicke and Broca language areas for every patient. We integrated the results into a frameless stereotaxy system. To visualize the result

Primary face motor area as the motor representation of articulation.

No clinical data have yet been presented to show that a lesion localized to the primary motor area (M1) can cause severe transient impairment of articulation, although a motor representation for articulation has been suggested to exist within M1. Here we describe three cases of patients who developed severe dysarthria, temporarily mimicking speech arrest or aphemia, due to a localized brain lesion near the left face representation of the human primary motor cortex (face-M1). Speech was slow, effortful, lacking normal prosody, and more affected than expected from the degree of facial or tongue

The neural mechanisms of hallucinations: A quantitative meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging data was used to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying auditory-verbal and visual hallucinations (AVHs and VHs). Consistent activation across studies during AVHs, but not VHs, in Wernicke's and Broca's areas is consistent with involvement of speech and language processes in the experience of hearing voices when none are present. Similarly, greater activity in auditory cortex during AVHs and in visual cortex during VHs supports models proposing over-stimulation of sensory cortices in the generation of these percept

Framing effects: behavioral dynamics and neural basis.

This study examined the neural basis of framing effects using life-death decision problems framed either positively in terms of lives saved or negatively in terms of lives lost in large group and small group contexts. Using functional MRI we found differential brain activations to the verbal and social cues embedded in the choice problems. In large group contexts, framing effects were significant where participants were more risk seeking under the negative (loss) framing than under the positive (gain) framing. This behavioral difference in risk preference was mainly regulated by the activation

Functional lateralisation of pitch accents and intonation in Norwegian: Monrad-Krohn's study of an aphasic patient with altered "melody of speech".

The present article provides a linguistic analysis of Monrad-Krohn's famous description of a patient with deviant prosody (1947). Monrad-Krohn found it particularly striking that the patient's "melody of speech" had been damaged although her musical abilities showed no impairment. The patient had suffered a traumatic motor aphasia as the result of a shrapnel wound in Broca's area. In East Norwegian, accented syllables are associated with one of two pitch patterns, either a fall in pitch or a low-level pitch. The patient had trouble producing the distinction between these two accents. Monrad-Kr

Neuroimaging epicenters as potential sites of onset of the neuroanatomical pathology in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia lacks a clear definition at the neuroanatomical level, capturing the sites of origin and progress of this disorder. Using a network-theory approach called epicenter mapping on cross-sectional magnetic resonance imaging from 1124 individuals with schizophrenia, we identified the most likely "source of origin" of the structural pathology. Our results suggest that the Broca's area and adjacent frontoinsular cortex may be the epicenters of neuroanatomical pathophysiology in schizophrenia. These epicenters can predict an individual's response to treatment for psychosis. In addition, c

The neural representation of intrusive thoughts.

Based on the philosophical notion that language embodies thought we investigated whether a habitual tendency for intrusive thought that younger and older participants report over a period of 100 sessions, spread out over about 6 months, is associated with brain regions related to language production. In favour of this hypothesis, we found that individual differences in habitual intrusive thoughts are correlated with activity in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG, Broca's area) as well as the cingulate cortex (CC) during a two-choice reaction-time task in fMRI. Participants who habitually ten

[Amusia and its topic specification].

A historical development of views on amusia and its clinical phenomenology is reviewed. The authors present a case of atypical amusia in a patient aged 32 years with glioma of the right temporal lobe including the upper temporal gyrus. Amusia was combined with euphoria and disturbances of evaluation of speech intonation. It has been assumed that different mechanisms implicated with different regions of both brain hemispheres may underlie amusia. Sometimes these mechanisms appear to be universal, e.g. disorders of symbolic gnosis in posterior hemisphere lesions, being comorbid with amusia as di
