Dengue transmission remains a major public health challenge in rapidly urbanising regions, yet spatial risk patterns may vary across residential environments. This study investigated how housing typology, surrounding land use, and built-vegetation interfaces may represent environmental zones associated with elevated dengue occurrence in Kuala Selangor, Malaysia. Using validated georeferenced dengue surveillance records collected between 2020 and 2024, we applied GIS-based spatial analyses across three dominant residential housing typologies: terrace/landed housing, high-rise housing, and tradi

Among many long-term policy questions raised by the COVID-19 pandemic, renewed energy has been given to arguments about the importance of built environments to wellbeing. Restricting access to space outside the home helped to newly expose the relational value of public spaces, including mundane commercial spaces. Drawing on qualitative evidence from mapping interviews with 46 Australians during the period of restrictions, we explore the ways that loss of access to public space influenced multiple forms of loneliness-emotional, social, collective, and existential. Public space, we argue, can be

INTRODUCTION: How well can older adults adapt to retrofitted spaces that were never designed to meet their evolving needs? Retrofitted senior living facilities often magnify safety risks that purpose-built environments are specifically designed to mitigate, forcing older adults with functional limitations to contend with bathroom spaces ill-suited to their needs. Among these, bathroom microenvironments stand out as critical zones of vulnerability, warranting immediate investigation.
PURPOSE: This study explored the lived experiences of older adults with functional limitations in retrofitted s

Increasing attention is being paid to the importance of built environment characteristics for participation, especially among people with various levels of impairment or activity limitations. The purpose of this research was to examine the role of specific characteristics in the urban environment as they interact with underlying impairments and activity limitations to either promote or hinder participation in life situations. Using data from the Chicago Community Adult Health Study (2001-2003) in the United States, we used logistic regression to examine the effect of built environment characte

INTRODUCTION: Gait disturbance is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) that worsens under complex conditions and might change according to environmental context. In this study, we aimed to determine how observing gait demands and context affects arousal and valence in PD.
METHODS: Fifty PD participants and 50 healthy subjects (HS) completed a questionnaire evaluating arousal and valence of gait observation. This consisted of 36 videos showing a person walking, which were categorized based on two factors: (i) context: natural or built environment; and (ii) walking demand: Low-Demand (LD, e.g

This paper draws from Hägerstrand's space-time framework to generate new insights on the everyday mobilities of individuals with visual impairments in the San Francisco Bay Area. While existing research on visual impairment and mobility emphasizes individual physical limitations resulting from vision loss or inaccessible public spaces, this article highlights and bridges both the behavioral and social processes that influence individual mobility. A qualitative analysis of sit-down and mobile interview data reveals that the space-time constraints of people with visual impairments are closely li

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major health problem in the United States and around the world. To date, relationships between obesity and aspects of the built environment have not been evaluated empirically at the individual level.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between the built environment around each participant's place of residence and self-reported travel patterns (walking and time in a car), body mass index (BMI), and obesity for specific gender and ethnicity classifications.
METHODS: Body Mass Index, minutes spent in a car, kilometers walked, age, income, educational attainment, an

PURPOSE: Machine learning methods accurately predict physical activity outcomes using accelerometer data generated by wearable devices. Thus, they allow investigation of the impact of the built environment on population physical activity. Although traditional machine learning methods do not provide prediction uncertainty, a new method, Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART), can quantify such uncertainty as a posterior predictive distribution. Our objective was to evaluate the performance of BART in regard to predicting physical activity status.
METHODS: We applied multinomial BART and a b

In this paper we explore the potential applicability of evidence of health-enabling effects of elements of the built environment - particularly access to nature - deriving from research in healthcare facilities to evidence-based design in the custodial context. Drawing on comparative qualitative research conducted in the UK and the Nordic region, we argue that although available data lack direct comparability, there is evidence that access to nature generates the same health-enabling effects in custody as are recognised in healthcare facilities. Reflecting on the differing political contexts o

BACKGROUND: Neighbourhood environmental features, including green and blue spaces, access to amenities, traffic, and ambient air pollution, may influence mental health in later life. Depression in older adults is associated with morbidity, cognitive decline, and reduced quality of life. While cross-sectional studies have linked environmental features to depressive symptoms, longitudinal evidence remains limited. This study examined longitudinal associations between built and natural neighbourhood characteristics, ambient air pollution, and depressive symptoms in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Access to green space has been hypothesized to have a beneficial impact on children's mental well-being and cognitive development. The underlying mechanisms of the mental health benefits of green space are not fully understood, but different pathways have been suggested, such as the psychologically restoring capacities of green space, the ability to facilitate physical activity and social cohesion, and the mitigation of exposure to air pollution.
OBJECTIVES: In this nationwide cohort study, we investigated associations between residential green space in early childhood and a clini

The impact of environmental risk factors on chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of the literature on the association between the general external exposome and CKD development or progression. We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for case-control or cohort studies, that investigated the association of the general external exposome with a change in eGFR or albuminuria, diagnosis or progression of CKD, or CKD-related mortality. The risk of bias of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Summary effect estimates were cal

BACKGROUND: The International Space Station (ISS) is a unique built environment due to the effects of microgravity, space radiation, elevated carbon dioxide levels, and especially continuous human habitation. Understanding the composition of the ISS microbial community will facilitate further development of safety and maintenance practices. The primary goal of this study was to characterize the viable microbiome of the ISS-built environment. A second objective was to determine if the built environments of Earth-based cleanrooms associated with space exploration are an appropriate model of the

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a parasitic, vector-borne infection with a broad, global distribution is prevalent in Mashhad, a city in north-eastern Iran, which is known as a significant hyperendemic area both for anthroponotic and zoonotic CL. This study evaluates the spatial distribution probability of CL prevalence by examining various factors such as socio-demography, built environment, geology, and climate within Mashhad. Data from 3,033 CL patients diagnosed between 2013 and 2020 were analyzed. Sociological, environmental, and climatic variables were assessed using the generalized linear

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of research on the effects of the built environment, including mass transit systems, on health-related outcomes. While there is general agreement that the built environment affects travel choices and physical activity, it remains unclear how much of a public health benefit (in dollars) can be derived from land use policies that support walking, biking, and transit. In the present study, we develop a model to assess the potential cost savings in public health that will be realized from the investment in a new light rail transit system in Charlotte

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an increasingly prevalent condition among older adults, yet relatively little is known about how built environment variables may be associated with obesity in older age groups. This is particularly the case for more vulnerable older adults already showing functional limitations associated with subsequent disability.
METHODS: The Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders (LIFE) trial dataset (n = 1600) was used to explore the associations between perceived built environment variables and baseline obesity levels. Age-stratified recursive partitioning methods wer

This study aimed to determine the risk factors associated with unsafe events involving a motor vehicle, that occurred while group riding (cycling) in Perth, Western Australia. Naturalistic video footage was collected from 52 group riders and unsafe events identified. A case-crossover study was used to compare the road infrastructure and group behavioural characteristics of 108 case sites where unsafe events occurred to 216 control sites where no unsafe events occurred. After controlling for potential confounding factors, roundabouts increased the risk of an unsafe event compared to midblocks (

Few studies have considered the potential role of the built environment in increasing adolescent substance use. The current study explored the relationship between alcohol outlets, a potential malleable component of the neighborhood environment, and adolescent behavioral outcomes. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between alcohol outlet density, perceived alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana availability (ATOD), perception of substance use as a problem at the school, and self-reported ATOD use. Data come from Maryland Safe and Supportive Schools (MDS3) Initiative, a statewide project f

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a rising global health problem. The rapid urbanization experienced in Latin America might impact childhood obesity through different pathways involving urban built and social features of cities. We aimed to evaluate the association between built and social environment features of cities and childhood obesity across countries and cities in Latin America.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of data from 20,040 children aged 1-5 years living in 159 large cities in six Latin American countries. We used individual-level anthropometric data for excess weight (overweig
