Penis "En Bloc": From Reproducible Harvesting to Transplantation in a Cadaver study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the reproducibility of en bloc penile harvesting with a focus on the vascular structures to determine whether the procedure could be performed while preserving critical vascular supply. METHODS: A single-center, prospective cadaver study was conducted from November 2023 to October 2024 using 15 male cadavers, a number determined a priori. The main outcome criterion was successful harvesting and transplantation. This was defined as a harvest that included the entire corpora cavernosa, the urethra up to the subprostatic region, the pudendal nerves

High radial nerve entrapment neuropathy: an anatomical cadaver study and case report.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenetic mechanism of high radial nerve entrapment neuropathy involves the fibrous arch of the lateral head of the triceps brachii and lateral intermuscular septum. However, the details of these anatomical structures remain unknown. We described the anatomical course of the radial nerve in the upper arm and its relationship with the lateral head of the triceps brachii and lateral intermuscular septum. METHODS: Eleven freshly frozen cadavers (22 limbs, 7 females, and mean age: 87.3 years) were used. The elbow joint was placed at 90° flexion and a lateral incision was made.

Patient-matched osseointegrated prostheses for thumb amputees: a cadaver and feasibility study.

Thumb amputations affect 50% of hand functionality. Common solutions consist of microsurgical treatments or silicone vacuum prosthesis. Not all patients are eligible for microsurgical treatment and the use of vacuum prosthesis is often discouraged because of their instability. On the contrary, osseointegrated prosthesis provide stable retention and osseoperception. This cadaveric study evaluated the process of a patient-matched osseointegrated prosthesis for the treatment of thumb amputees. Computed tomography (CT) medical images reconstruction provided information on metacarpal stump, used as

Cadaver Homologous Banked Fascia Lata in Skull Base Reconstruction: Preliminary Multidisciplinary Experiences.

Skull base reconstruction has been a widely debated issue. Both autologous and heterologous materials have been proposed, however the formers are usually preferred due to their optimal healing outcomes and integration. Nevertheless they are still associated with donor-site functional and aesthetic morbidity. The aim of this study is to report a preliminary experience of different sites defects skull base repair with Cadaver homologous banked fascia lata graft. Patients who underwent reconstruction of skull base defects with Cadaver homologous banked fascia lata between January 2020 until July

Biomechanical comparison of different fixation methods in tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Various fixation methods are available for tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis: nail, plate, or screws. An intramedullary bone stabilization system within a balloon catheter has not previously been used in tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis. The aim of this study was to compare the stability of these techniques. METHODS: Twenty-four lower legs from fresh-frozen human cadavers were used. Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis was performed with a retrograde nail, a lateral locking plate, three cancellous screws, or an intramedullary bone stabilization system. The ankles were loaded cyclically in pl

An aberrant right subclavian artery in a 63-year-old male cadaver.

An aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA), also called "arteria lusoria", is described as a right subclavian artery (RSA) with a retro-oesophageal course that most frequently originates as the most distal branch of the aortic arch. The aim of the following study was to present and thoroughly describe a case of an ARSA, its course, branches, and relation to the surrounding anatomical structures and discuss the clinical significance and embryology of this variant. During routine dissection, a 63-year-old male cadaver with an abnormal variant of the RSA was found. The RSA branched off from the a

Bihemispheric posterior inferior cerebellar artery in a cadaver with Chiari I malformation.

Typically, patients with Chiari I malformations (CM I) do not have other intracranial anatomical variations, especially vascular derailments. Here, we report the findings of a cadaveric specimen found to have CM I and cerebellar tonsils supplied by a single posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) i.e., a bihemispheric PICA. An adult male cadaver was found to have CM I. It was also noted that the left PICA descended inferiorly to the level of C1 and that there was absence of the right PICA. The territory of the right PICA was supplied by the left PICA. The tonsillar component of the left PI

Avoiding the Deep Plantar Arterial Arch in Transmetatarsal Amputations: A Cadaver Study.

BACKGROUND: The deep plantar arterial arch (DPAA) is formed by an anastomosis between the deep plantar artery and the lateral plantar artery. The potential risk of injury to the DPAA is concerning when performing transmetatarsal amputations, and care must be taken to preserve the anatomy. We sought to determine the positional anatomy of the DPAA based on anatomical landmarks that could be easily identified and palpated during transmetatarsal amputation. METHODS: In an effort to improve our understanding of the positional relationship of the DPAA to the distal metatarsal parabola, dissections

Kinematic Analysis of Sequential Partial-Midfoot Arthrodesis in Simulated Gait Cadaver Model.

BACKGROUND: Primary tarsometatarsal (TMT) arthrodesis is gaining popularity in the surgical treatment of Lisfranc injuries. However, few studies have evaluated biomechanical effects of TMT arthrodesis. The purpose of this study was to compare the kinematics of joints adjacent to the midfoot during simulations of stance before and after sequential arthrodesis of the first, second, and third TMT joints. METHODS: Ten midtibia cadaveric specimens were loaded on a 6-degree-of-freedom robotic gait simulator. Motion capture cameras were used to collect joint kinematics throughout simulations of the

A Cadaver Study Confirming the Location of Dye after Trigeminal Ganglion Rhizotomy.

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency thermal rhizotomy demonstrates an excellent treatment outcome with a high success rate among patients of intractable trigeminal neuralgia. The triangular plexus which is an immediate retrogasserian portion of the trigeminal root is suggested as the best place of lesioning during radiofrequency thermal rhizotomy. However, the anatomy of the triangular plexus has been relatively unrecognized, while the anatomical study related to therapeutic procedure is scarce. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to confirm with gross and microscopic finding of the trigeminal sys

Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation Cadaver Donors: What about Tissues Used as Allografts?

Several studies demonstrated the efficacy of post-mortem extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) on donors in preserving organ function addressing organ transplantation. Nevertheless, no common and shared evidence was reached about the possibility of using ECMO donors in tissue harvesting. Therefore, this work aimed first to review the current scientific literature about ECMO donors, and then to focus on the use of ECMO tissues as allografts, mainly addressing musculoskeletal tissues, which are of the most interest for reconstruction. A search was conducted on the current scientific literat

Reappraisal of the Mawangdui Han Tomb Cadaver Thirty Years After Its Unearthing.

The Mawangdui tomb No.1 cadaver, a female corpse from the Western Han Dynasty, was unearthed in 1972. Forensic examination at the time of discovery indicated fairly remarkable presence of bodily constituents at the anatomical, histological, and molecular levels. The cadaver was preserved in a formalin-based fixative afterward, and maintained in the Hunan Museum. To better protect this rare human corpse, a reappraisal of the status of preservation was carried out using noninvasive approaches, including X-ray radiography, gross anatomical examination, and histological, microbiological, and molec

Estimation of occupational formaldehyde exposure in cadaver dissection laboratory and its implications.

The formaldehyde (FA) is a universally used chemical for preservation of cadavers in dissection halls. The adverse effects of formalin exposure are health concern to faculty, workers, and students. The benefits of using formalin, its cost effectiveness, and its proper fixation and efficient preservation of tissue, have to outweigh its adverse effects on the health of those working with it. The best way to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks are providing adequate ventilation, using personal protective equipment, and developing awareness of FA's adverse effects. This study observed that both

Transoral Thyroidectomy Using A Flexible Robotic System: A Preclinical Cadaver Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Traditionally, most thyroid surgery utilizes a curvilinear cervical incision with a resulting permanent scar. Minimally invasive and remote access thyroid surgery techniques continue to evolve. Transoral approaches through a vestibular incision have been developed at several centers throughout the world, obviating the need for a cutaneous incision and optimizing aesthetics. To date this technique has been performed using rigid endoscopes or a linear robotic platform. The goal of this study was to test the feasibility of a novel flexible robotic system to perform a transv

Anastomotic patterns of the facial parotid plexus (PP): A human cadaver study.

Details of the human facial parotid plexus (PP) are not readily accessible during ordinary anatomical teaching because of insufficient time and difficulties encountered in the preparation. For parotid and facial nerve surgery however, precise knowledge of PP is of crucial importance. The aim of this study was therefore to provide more details of PP in anatomic specimens. Following anatomical dissection, its location, syntopy and morphology were analyzed in 158 cervico-facial halves of 95 cadavers. The facial nerve (FN) divides into a larger temporo-facial and a smaller cervico-facial trunk. Bo
