The effects of developmental cadmium exposure on health and disease.

Cadmium (Cd) is a naturally occurring toxic heavy metal found ubiquitously throughout the environment. Anthropogenic activities since the onset of industrialization have led to widespread environmental contamination that has substantially increased human exposure and associated health risks. As one of the top ten chemicals of major public health concern of the World Health Organization, Cd poses significant risks to human health, particularly when exposure occurs during the critical stages of development. Cd accumulates in the placenta and can be detected in cord blood and fetal and neonatal t

Cadmium transport characteristics in the phloem of sweet potato.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in farmland soil poses serious threats to human health. The Cd transport and accumulation in the aboveground tissues of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) variety "Fu Cai 18″ and the characteristics of phloem-mediated Cd transport were elucidated in this study. Sweet potato seedlings grown in hydroponics were analyzed. The scanning through μ-XRF revealed that Cd was mainly distributed in cortex cells and vascular tissues of the stem; in leaves, it was mainly distributed in veins. The root regeneration and leaf smearing tests revealed that Cd accumulated in the stem can be

Mechanisms of Phytoremediation by Resveratrol against Cadmium Toxicity.

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity poses a significant threat to human health and the environment due to its widespread occurrence and persistence. In recent years, considerable attention has been directed towards exploring natural compounds with potential protective effects against Cd-induced toxicity. Among these compounds, resveratrol (RV) has emerged as a promising candidate, demonstrating a range of beneficial effects attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This literature review systematically evaluates the protective role of RV against Cd toxicity, considering the various mec

Cadmium and lead implication in testis cancer; is there a connection?

Testis cancer (TC) is the most common malignancy of young men. Current evidence from studies, alongside genetics and hormonal status, suggests a significant role of toxic metals, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), in the origin and development of TC. Besides oxidative stress and endocrine disruption, interaction with bioelements is one of the critical mechanisms of Cd and Pb toxicity and malign transformation. This study aimed to investigate metal levels in blood, healthy, and tumor testis tissue and to reveal hormone, oxidative status, and bioelements levels in patients with TC. The study enrolled 5

CHRONIC EFFECTS OF CADMIUM CHLORIDE ON RAT EMBRYOGENESIS.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of cadmium toxicity on rat embryogenesis when exposed to other heavy metal citrates. Despite the variety of scientific publications discussing the influence of cadmium on mammalian postnatal development, the effect of this metal on embryogenesis has not yet been sufficiently studied. In this experimental study, cadmium chloride was administered to experimental pregnant female Wistar rats at a daily dose of 1.0 mg/kg. Rats were allocated at random into groups receiving either cadmium chloride alone or additional zinc citrate, cerium citrate,

Phytoremediation of cadmium from soil, air and water.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pose a great threat to ecosystems and long-term exposure causes adverse effects to wildlife and humans. Cadmium induces a variety of diseases including cancer, kidney dysfunction, bone lesions, anemia and hypertension. Here we review the ability of plants to accumulate cadmium from soil, air and water under different environmental conditions, focusing on absorption mechanisms and factors affecting these. Cadmium possess various transport mechanisms and pathways roughly divided into symplast and apoplast pathway. Excessive cadmium concentrations in the environm

Accumulation, transportation, and distribution of tetracycline and cadmium in rice.

Co-exposure to heavy metal and antibiotic pollution might result in complexation and synergistic interactions, affecting rice growth and further exacerbating pollutant enrichment. Therefore, our study sought to clarify the influence of different Tetracycline (TC) and Cadmium(Cd) concentration ratios (both alone and combined) on rice growth, pollutant accumulation, and transportation during the tillering stage in hydroponic system. Surprisingly, our findings indicated that the interaction between TC and Cd could alleviate the toxic effects of TC/Cd on aerial rice structures and decrease polluta

Biological Effects of Human Exposure to Environmental Cadmium.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal for the human organism and for all ecosystems. Cd is naturally found at low levels; however, higher amounts of Cd in the environment result from human activities as it spreads into the air and water in the form of micropollutants as a consequence of industrial processes, pollution, waste incineration, and electronic waste recycling. The human body has a limited ability to respond to Cd exposure since the metal does not undergo metabolic degradation into less toxic species and is only poorly excreted. The extremely long biological half-life of Cd essentially makes

Effects of Cadmium Exposure on the Immune System and Immunoregulation.

Cadmium (Cd), a biologically non-essential heavy metal, is widespread in the environment, including the air, water, and soil, and is widely present in foods and quantum dot preparations. Cd enters the body primarily through inhalation and ingestion. Its biological half-life in humans is 10-35 years; therefore, Cd poses long-term health risks. While most studies on Cd toxicity have focused on organ and tissue damage, the immunotoxicity of Cd has drawn increasing attention recently. Cd accumulates in immune cells, modulates the function of the immune system, triggers immunological responses, and

Involvement of metal transporters in the intestinal uptake of cadmium.

We investigated the mechanism underlying intestinal cadmium (Cd) uptake based on the mediators (metal transporters) of essential elements, such as Fe, Zn, Cu, and Ca, under normal conditions in female rats. These elements interact with Cd uptake from the intestinal tract. Cd concentration at each site of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) increased as Cd exposure increased. However, Cd concentration was the highest in the duodenum. The gene expression of ZIP14, DMT1, and ATP7A increased with increase in Cd concentration. Further, Cu concentration decreased as Cd concentration i

Effect of cadmium on the sorption of tylosin by polystyrene microplastics.

Microplastics are widespread in the environment and might transport readily by ocean currents, wind and atmospheric deposition. Simultaneously, antibiotics and heavy metals could often be detected in the environment. They are both positively charged, it is necessary to clarify the interactions of these pollutants with microplastics when they were coexist. In this study, the most commonly used polystyrene (PS) was selected as a representative microplastic. This study investigated the effect of Cd(II) on the sorption of TYL by PS in different coexistence systems. The results showed that: in the

Structural Features and HER activity of Cadmium Phosphohalides.

We have carried out a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the structures and properties of a family of cadmium phosphochlorides with varying Cl/Cd and P/Cd ratios, Cd2 P3 Cl, Cd4 P2 Cl3 , Cd3 PCl3, and Cd7 P4 Cl6 . Their optical band gaps are in the visible region and the values are sensitive to the Cl/Cd and P/Cd ratios, leading to an increase and decrease, respectively. First-principles calculations were used to understand the bonding and electronic structures. All phosphochlorides except Cd2 P3 Cl possess direct band gaps. The calculated dielectric constants and Born effe

Impact of cadmium stress on two maize hybrids.

Some physiological parameters and composition of the root cell walls of two maize hybrids (monocots), the sensitive Novania and the tolerant Almansa were studied after treatment with cadmium cations. After 10 days of Cd2+ treatment (1 × 10-5 M and 5 × 10-5 M), plant growth inhibition, in the sensitive hybrid in particular, as well as a certain alteration in root structure and pigment content were observed. The Cd2+ accumulation was ten times higher in the roots than in the shoots. Chemical analyses and atomic absorption spectroscopy proved that Cd2+ modified the composition of the root cell wa

Endothelial dysfunction in subjects with chronic cadmium exposure.

Vascular endothelium is a target of cadmium (Cd) toxicity. Cd exposure has been reported to be associated with vascular disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of Cd exposure on markers of endothelial function in human subjects chronically exposed to Cd. Based on blood Cd levels, seventy-five women were categorized into non-exposed, Cd-exposed and severely Cd-exposed groups. Nitrite, L-arginine, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and soluble thrombomodulin levels in blood were measured. Nitrite levels were lower in Cd-exposed subjects than non-exposed subjects. Plasma L-

A review of molecular events of cadmium-induced carcinogenesis.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic, heavy industrial metal that poses serious environmental health hazards to both humans and wildlife. Recently, Cd and Cd-containing compounds have been classified as known human carcinogens, and epidemiological data show causal associations with prostate, breast, and lung cancer. The molecular mechanisms involved in Cd-induced carcinogenesis are poorly understood and are only now beginning to be elucidated. The effects of chronic exposure to Cd have recently attracted great interest due to the development of malignancies in Cd-induced tumorigenesis in animals models. Br

The role of GSTs in the tolerance of Rhizobium leguminosarum to cadmium.

A high intraspecific difference in cadmium (Cd) tolerance exits among Rhizobium leguminosarum strains. The higher tolerance to Cd appeared to be related to the efficiency of the glutathione (GSH)-Cd chelation mechanism, but it is not known how efficiency is influenced. Thus, in this work it was intended to investigate the traits behind the efficiency of intracellular Cd chelation by GSH. Glutathione-S-transferases (GST; EC 2.5.1.18) are a family of multi-functional dimeric proteins, found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, which are implicated in a variety of stress conditions. The common fea

Perspectives on the toxicology of cadmium-based quantum dots.

As the number of applications of quantum dots (QDs) grows, the likelihood of exposure increases. Because these metals have the potential for detrimental environmental and health effects, concerns have been raised over our lack of understanding about the fate of these products. Among various types of QDs, cadmium-based quantum dots attract the greatest attention due to their wide applications. To properly assess the potential risk of cadmium-containing QDs, we summarize the current state of academic knowledge on the toxicity of cadmium-based QDs.

Toxicology of cadmium and its damage to mammalian organs.

The detrimental health effects of cadmium (Cd) were first described in the mid 19th century. As part of industrial developments, increasing usage of Cd has led to widespread contamination of the environment that threatens human health, particularly today. Rather than acute, lethal exposures, the real challenge in the 21st century in a global setting seems to be chronic low Cd exposure (CLCE), mainly from dietary sources. Ubiquity of Cd makes it a serious environmental health problem that needs to be thoroughly assessed because it already affects or will affect large proportions of the world's
