Data of insecticide action of a nanoemulsion of Citronella essential oil on Cochliomyia hominivorax blowfly.

Cochliomyia hominivorax is the dipteran that causes the worst and most serious types of myiasis in animals and humans in the Americas. The data described here show the effects of a commercial product formulated on the basis of citronella essential oil nanoemulsified (Nano Citronela Plus®) directly on eggs, first, second and third stage larvae of the C. hominivorax blowfly, in addition to the indirect effect on the oviposition of adult flies. These data make up the gross base that was used in the preparation of the article "Repellent, ovicidal, larvicidal and adulticidal action of a nanoemulsio

Forensic entomology and the estimation of the minimum time since death in indoor cases.

Eight cases that occurred indoors in which the insects played an important role in the mPMI estimation are presented. The bodies of socially isolated people and old people living alone were discovered in central Italy between June and November. mPMI ranged from a few days to several weeks. Insects were collected during the body recovery and the postmortem. Climatic data were obtained from the closest meteorological stations and from measurements performed on the site. Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae species were present in 75% of the cases with Lucilia sericata and Chrysomya albiceps collected

Cutaneous myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax in a drug user.

Myiasis is the condition resulting from the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by dipterous larvae. The blowflies (Calliphoridae) of Argentina comprise several species that may cause myiasis by colonizing wounds or infected body orifices, and one specific parasite: Cochliomyia hominivorax. This species often causes traumatic myiasis in cattle, dogs and cats, and it is not rare in humans. The larvae consume living tissues, so they are dangerous unless speedily removed. Immediate operative exploration along with the removal of larvae and primary defect closure is recommended in ever

New records of Muscidae (Diptera) in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil.

Synanthropic flies outstanding beside other flies due their relative abundance close to domestic animals and human population, to which they are able to cause myiasis or transmit pathogenic agents. As they're necrophagous they act as corpse decomposers and are useful in the forensic entomology in the post mortem interval determination. This study aimed to know flies diversity and abundance in Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Captures were made weekly, utilizing three traps baited with decaying fish meat, from June of 2008 to May of 2009 in a remainder ciliary forest of the Embrapa's

Methods for the optimal preservation of blow fly intra-puparial forms for morphological analysis in forensic casework.

Accurate minimum post-mortem interval (minPMI) estimations often rely on a precise age determination of insect developmental stages, which is significantly influenced by environmental temperature. An optimal preservation of the entomological samples collected at crime scenes is pivotal for a reliable aging of immature insect samples. For blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the most widely used insect indicators in forensic investigations, an appropriate preservation of tissues is particularly important in the case of puparial samples because aging methods for intra-puparial forms usually depe

Myiasis in Kuwait: nosocomial infections caused by lucilia sericata and Megaselia scalaris.

Myiasis, the invasion of live human tissue by larvae of Diptera, is reported in the nasopharynx and a leg wound in two patients who were hospitalized for more than 72 hours in Mubarak Al-Kabeer Teaching Hospital in Kuwait City, Kuwait. On the fourth and fifth days after a 10-year-old Kuwaiti boy was admitted to the hospital intensive care unit in a bloodied and comatose state following a traffic accident, 'worms' that came out of his nostrils were fixed, cleared, and identified as second and third instar of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). After 14 days, 'worms' were seen in the orig

Insects dispersing taeniid eggs: Who and how?

Taeniosis/cysticercosis and echinococcosis are neglected zoonotic helminth infections with high disease burden caused by tapeworms which circulate between definitive and intermediate host reflecting a predator-prey interaction. Taeniid eggs can remain vital for months, allowing arthropods to mechanically transport them to intermediate hosts. However, the multiple routes that arthropods provide as carriers of taeniid eggs are still often unregarded or not considered. This review focuses on the prevalence and importance of arthropods as carriers and spreaders of taeniid eggs in the epidemiology

Insects and associated arthropods analyzed during medicolegal death investigations in Harris County, Texas, USA: January 2013- April 2016.

The application of insect and arthropod information to medicolegal death investigations is one of the more exacting applications of entomology. Historically limited to homicide investigations, the integration of full time forensic entomology services to the medical examiner's office in Harris County has opened up the opportunity to apply entomology to a wide variety of manner of death classifications and types of scenes to make observations on a number of different geographical and species-level trends in Harris County, Texas, USA. In this study, a retrospective analysis was made of 203 forens

Enabling technologies to improve area-wide integrated pest management programmes for the control of screwworms.

The economic devastation caused in the past by the New World screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to the livestock industry in the U.S.A., Mexico and the rest of Central America was staggering. The eradication of this major livestock pest from North and Central America using the sterile insect technique (SIT) as part of an area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programme was a phenomenal technical and managerial accomplishment with enormous economic implications. The area is maintained screwworm-free by the weekly release of 40 million sterile flies

Cutaneous tumbu fly myiasis in a returning child traveller and a novel EMLA-assisted extraction technique in paediatric emergency care.

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation caused by dipterous larvae and is an important diagnostic consideration in travellers returning from endemic regions with infected skin lesions. Paediatric cases present unique management challenges, particularly when invasive procedures or general anaesthesia are considered. We report a case of cutaneous myiasis with associated cellulitis in a toddler following travel to Gambia, caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga (tumbu fly). A novel non-operative approach using eutectic mixture of local anaesthetic cream was successfully employed to facilitate larval extrac

Efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®) for the treatment of myiasis caused by the zoonotic tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga, in domestic dogs under field conditions.

Cordylobia anthropophaga is a major cause of furuncular myiasis in dogs and humans in sub-Saharan Africa, yet evidence for pharmacological control remains limited. Current management relies mainly on mechanical larval removal, and no controlled studies have assessed the efficacy of modern antiparasitic agents. This study evaluated the curative and preventive efficacy of a single dose of afoxolaner (NexGard®) in dogs with naturally acquired C. anthropophaga infestation under field conditions and explored a possible indirect protective effect in puppies after maternal treatment. Characterising the innate immune response in breech strike resistant and non-selected sheep to the sheep blowfly (Lucilia cuprina).

Breech strike is a major parasitic problem affecting wool-producing sheep. While skin wrinkles and fecal soiling are recognized risk factors, much of the difference in susceptibility between individual sheep remains unexplained. This study compared the early immune response of 3-year-old Merino ewes genetically selected to be resistant to breech strike to that of the non-selected ewes following a brief Lucilia cuprina larval challenge. Fourteen sheep (seven breech strike resistant and seven non-selected sheep) were challenged with L. cuprina eggs at four random sites on their back. Skin biopsi

Australian surveys on incidence and control of blowfly strike in sheep between 2003 and 2019 reveal increased use of breeding for resistance, treatment with preventative chemicals and pain relief around mulesing.

Blowfly strike or cutaneous myiasis, caused principally by the Australian sheep blowfly Lucilia cuprina is endemic to Australian sheep producing areas and is a major cause of suffering and economic loss. This article reports incidence and control practices as determined by three cross-sectional surveys of Australian sheep farmers covering the years 2003 (n = 1365), 2011 (n = 575) and 2018 (n = 354) with more questions relating to blowfly strike in the latter two surveys. Breech strike was reported at a higher rate than body strike in all survey years. Reported annual incidence of breech strike

Muscle attachment site patterns for species determination in West Palaearctic Wohlfahrtia (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) of medical and veterinary importance.

The flesh fly genus Wohlfahrtia Brauer & Bergenstamm contains at least six species of medical and veterinary importance. Traditional methods of species identification in specimens of Wohlfahrtia, however, are restricted mostly to adult forms. Muscle attachment site (MAS) patterns allow for species determination in larval forms. MAS patterns in third instar larvae of six common West Palearctic species of Wohlfahrtia have been analyzed for this study. As in previously investigated Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae, MAS patterns were found to be species specific. A genus pattern was established to

Oral myiasis in an elderly patient.

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is the invasion of living tissue of humans and other mammals by eggs or maggots of flies of the order of Diptera. It occurs mainly in the Tropics and is associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene. Oral myiases in an older man appears to be rare. OBJECTIVE: To relate a case of oral myiases in a debilitated older man treated by mechanical removal of the maggots, identifying the adult insect that caused the infestation. METHODS: The diagnosis of oral myiasis was established by the clinical examination and it was detected that the infestation involved only soft ti

Gene flow, kinship, and source population assignment in Chrysomya blow flies.

Blow flies of the genus Chrysomya are among the earliest colonizers of human remains and are important forensic indicators in Africa and the Middle East. However, the population genetic structure of Old World Chrysomya species in North Africa remains poorly understood. We conducted the first amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP)-based population genetic analysis of Chrysomya albiceps and Chrysomya marginalis in Egypt to assess geographic and temporal structure and to evaluate their forensic utility for population assignment. Adult flies were collected from multiple localities in Egypt

Thermal developmental models of a Chinese population of the blow fly Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy.

Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is widely distributed across the Holarctic, Oriental, and Neotropical realms, and has also been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Numerous case reports confirmed that this species frequently colonizes corpses at death scenes, validating its considerable forensic value. Therefore, investigating the developmental patterns of C. vicina is crucial for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). This study observed developmental duration and larval body length in C. vicina under seven constant temperature conditions (16-34

Weathered oil fragments as an ecotoxic legacy of ocean oil spills: Developmental and redox disruption in necrophagous Chrysomya albiceps larvae.

Oil spills in marine and coastal environments represent one of the most severe ecotoxicological threats, with effects that can persist for years due to the formation of weathered oil fragments (WOFs). These residues accumulate on beaches and shorelines, acting as continuous sources of exposure and constituting a long-term legacy of spills that remains largely unexplored, particularly in the context of decomposition and necrophagous interactions. In this study, we simulated mammalian mortality in contact with WOFs and assessed their effects on the development of the necrophagous fly Chrysomya a

Urethral Myiasis Associated With an Indwelling Urethral Catheter in a Male Patient.

Human myiasis is an infestation caused by fly larvae. Although cutaneous myiasis is the most common form, involvement of the urogenital tract is rare. We present a case of urethral myiasis in an elderly male with a long-term indwelling urethral catheter. The patient presented to the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Northern Greece with urethral pain. Approximately twenty larvae, each measuring about 10 mm, were removed manually. There were no signs of deeper tissue involvement or bladder infestation. The patient received a short course of oral broad-spectrum antibiotics and repor
