Sugarcane is grown extensively throughout the world including more than 100,000 ha in Khuzestan province, Iran. The pink stalk borers Sesamia are key pests of sugarcane in this region, while other stalk borers will occur in sugarcane worldwide. CONTEXT: Policosanol is a natural substance derived from sugar cane that is advertised for its lipid-lowering effects as a nonprescription drug. More than 80 placebo-controlled or comparative trials, performed mostly by a single research institute, suggest that policosanol at doses of 5 to 40 mg/d has lipoprotein-lowering effects comparable with statins.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the lipoprotein-lowering effects of Cuban sugar cane-derived policosanol and to establish, if effective, dose-dependency up to 80 mg/d in patients with hypercholesterolemia or combined hyperlipidemia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between physical activity levels and atypical femoral fractures (AFF) in bisphosphonate (BP) users.
METHODS: In the Assessing Daily-Activity-Level for Decisions on Bisphosphonate Prescription (ADD-BP) study, we retrospectively analyzed 27 women with AFF from five hospitals (2019-2023), categorized into BP (n = 18) and no-BP (n = 9) groups. The authors report a case of histoplasmosis with H. duboisii authenticated by an histopathologic examination, serology on cross-section. The patient, a 22 year old man from comorian ascent had never left Madagascar and was working on a sugar-cane plantation. He was carrier of ulcerated and suppurated lesions in the inguinal folds and the ombilic and was to die without having received a proper treatment. It is the first case of great form histoplasmosis noticed in Madagascar, outside Continental Africa, geographical distribution area attributed until today to H. duboisii.

A stab wound to the right flank of a 24-year-old man produced immediate paralysis of both legs but spared sensation. Recovery was slow but sufficient to allow walking with a cane. Radicular artery interruption, in combination with systemic hypotension, is presumed to have caused selective watershed infarction of the spinal cord. Strokes of the spinal cord after trauma are rare, and those at a thoracic level usually represent delayed infarctions after pediatric chest or abdominal injuries. Our patient sustained an immediate and highly selective infarction.

During a 20 yr period (1978 to 1998), 233 isolates of Salmonella spp. were cultured from 179 wildlife animals (representing 25 species), 32 crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) eggs and six crocodile nesting sites, and represented 59 different serotypes. Salmonella serotype Virchow, the major serotype infecting humans in north Queensland, (Australia) was common in macropodids, but was not found in reptiles and was isolated only once from cane toads (Bufo marinus). Investigations of human cases of salmonellosis should include simultaneous studies on wild and domestic animals in contact with the case.

Five total hip and three total knee arthroplasties were performed, from 1969 to 1990, in six patients who had osteogenesis imperfecta. The patients who had a hip arthroplasty were followed for a mean of seven years, and those who had a knee arthroplasty, for a mean of ten years. Postoperatively, all had relief of pain and were able to walk; one patient used a walker and two used a cane. The only postoperative complication was an intrapelvic protrusion of the acetabular component six years after a bipolar hip replacement.

Sugarcane smut is the most severe sugarcane disease in China. The typical symptom is the emerging of a long, black whip from the top of the plant cane.
