Five samples of ampicillin capsules with a label claim of 250 mg were purchased from different dispensing points in a small town in Nigeria. Eighty-six patients with duodenal ulcer were treated in a multicentre controlled trial with carbenoxolone capsules (Duogastrone, 50 mg four times a day for six weeks) or a placebo. Sixty-nine patients accepted endoscopy at the beginning and end of the treatment. Symptomatic responses and endoscopic improvement were significantly greater in those receiving the active preparation than in those receiving the control capsules, complete, endoscopically assessed, healing being achieved in 65% and 20%, respectively, of individuals having accepted endoscopy, after six weeks' treatment. Capsule endoscopy (CE) is considered the first-line for the investigation of OGIB after conventional non-diagnostic endoscopic examinations. A detection rate of lesions outside the small bowel segment has been reported to range from 3.5% to >30%. Our primary objective was to analyze the role of CE in identifying lesions outside the small bowel segment that were not identified on conventional endoscopy in patients suspected of OGIB. In our study, CE appears to be effective and safe in diagnosing OGIB, also proving to be a tool in identifying lesions outside the small intestine segment.

Melanoma is a cancer that frequently metastasises to the small bowel, but most cases are asymptomatic and are diagnosed postmortem. Therefore, CT and PET CT cannot detect all lesions and conventional endoscopic study only detects 10-20% of lesions. The article describes clinical observations of helminthiasis detection in 18 of 208 patients during video capsule endoscopy (VCE). Indications for the appointment of VCE were complex clinical situations associated with the search for inflammatory diseases of the small intestine and sources of small intestine bleeding. Because of the high cost of VCE the diagnosis of parasitic diseases should be based on laboratory techniques in clinical practice.
