A 61-year-old woman with low grade obesity index complained of general fatigue. Cardiomegaly had been present since the age of 45. According to a roentgenogram on admission, her cardia-thoracic ratio was 61%. Pericardial effusion was strongly suspected because of extra echo spaces on both posterior and anterior walls, and unsynchronized echocardiograph waves of epicardium and pericardium. However, values of dynamic CT measured at areas equivalent to the extra echo spaces were -120. On admission, T1-emphasized MRI image showed a high signal density in those areas. After significant weight reduc

Over a 10 year period, 95 children aged 15 years and less underwent replacement of one or several of their heart valves, usually by a Starr-Edwards ball prosthesis. The predominant pathology was rheumatic heart disease and the most commonly affected valve was the mitral. Severe symptomatology, heart failure, cardiomegaly and high wedged-capillary and pulmonary arterial pressures were practically constant findings. Operative mortality was low (3.2%) and the long-term mortality was 10 patients. With an average follow-up of 40 months, results were excellent in the great majority of patients, with

Echocardiography adds a new dimension to diagnosis of cardiac disorders. This safe, noninvasive technique aids in the differential diagnosis of systolic murmur, chest pain, and cardiomegaly, in the etiologic diagnosis of mitral regurgitation and atrial fibrillation, and in assessing left ventricular function.

OBJECTIVES: To assess in a population of 21 fetuses diagnosed with absent pulmonary valve syndrome (APVS) the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis, the incidence of extracardiac and chromosomal anomalies and the perinatal outcome.
METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study of 21 fetuses with a confirmed diagnosis of APVS. All of them underwent fetal echocardiography and a detailed anatomical scan. Karyotyping was performed in 20/21 cases, with fluorescent in-situ hybridization analysis to detect the 22q11 microdeletion performed in 16/21 cases. The following variables were retrieved from

The neonatal form of carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (CPT II) deficiency is a rare lethal inherited disorder of fatty acid oxidation. Carnitine essentially transfers long-chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial membranes for β-oxidation, where CPT II plays a key role. CPT II deficiency phenotypical forms include lethal neonatal, severe infantile and myopathic forms. We present a term small-for-gestational-age neonate with hypoglycaemia, seizures, refractory cardiac arrhythmias and intracranial haemorrhage. Plasma acylcarnitine profile and the genetic study confirmed CPT II deficiency. Add

A case of glycogenosis type II infantile onset (Pompe's disease) is presented, and the literature is reviewed in order to establish the basis of the diagnostic suspect. We studied an 8-month old female with muscular weakness--and cardiac failure. The chest X-ray: cardiomegaly; electrocardiogram: PR interval of 0.06 seconds, gigant QRS complexes, biventricular hypertrophy, and the echocardiogram and cineangiography: left ventricle hypertrophy and hypokinesia. The patient died because of refractory heart failure. Histochemical examination demonstrated excessive intracellular accumulation of glyc

Pericardial effusion is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity. It can be associated with various cardiac and non-cardiac disorders. Dense deposit disease (DDD) is a rare kidney disease caused by uncontrolled activation of the alternative complement pathway. We are reporting a seven-year-old male child who was diagnosed to have DDD approved by renal biopsy and presented with shortness of breath, cough, and fever. Chest X-ray displayed cardiomegaly. Thereafter, echocardiography showed massive pericardial effusion and left ventricle compression with a risk for cardiac tampon

The dog is considered the main domestic reservoir for Trypanosoma cruzi infection and a suitable experimental animal model to study the pathological changes during the course of Chagas disease (CD). Vaccine development is one of CD prevention methods to protect people at risk. Two plasmids containing genes encoding a trans-sialidase protein (TcSP) and an amastigote-specific glycoprotein (TcSSP4) were used as DNA vaccines in a canine model. Splenomegaly was not found in either of the recombinant plasmid-immunized groups; however, cardiomegaly was absent in animals immunized only with the plasmi

Early fetal echocardiography and serial surveillance are crucial in pregnancies complicated by pregestational diabetes. Tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve syndrome may cause progressive cardiomegaly, ventricular hypertrophy, hydrops, and fetal demise. Timely diagnosis enables informed parental counseling and multidisciplinary perinatal planning.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether chest radiographs can contribute to prognosis in patients with acute heart failure (AHF).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Consecutive patients with AHF were enrolled by the participating emergency departments. Radiographic variables assessed were the presence or absence of evidence of cardiomegaly and pleural effusion and the pulmonary parenchymal pattern observed (vascular redistribution, interstitial edema, and/or alveolar edema). We gathered variables for the AHF episode and the patient's baseline state. Outcomes were in-hospital and 1-year mortality; hospital stay l

An artificial intelligence (AI)-based computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithm to detect some of the most common radiographic findings in the feline thorax was developed and tested. The database used for training comprised radiographs acquired at two different institutions. Only correctly exposed and positioned radiographs were included in the database used for training. The presence of several radiographic findings was recorded. Consequenly, the radiographic findings included for training were: no findings, bronchial pattern, pleural effusion, mass, alveolar pattern, pneumothorax, cardiomegal

Apixaban, a direct factor Xa inhibitor, is a novel oral anticoagulant (NOAC) indicated for prevention of embolic events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. The agent is associated with a lower risk of bleeding compared with vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin. Hemopericardium is a life-threatening bleeding event that is rarely caused by anticoagulants. We describe the case of a 76-year-old woman who was diagnosed with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and treated with apixaban. Six weeks later, she was hospitalized after complaints of weakness and dizziness, and a chest radiogra

We present a case of fetal tricuspid valve dysplasia, which was diagnosed at 22 weeks of gestation during a routine obstetrical examination. Serial fetal echocardiographic evaluation revealed progressive right ventricular outflow tract obstruction and persistent cardiomegaly. A female infant weighing 1,916 g was delivered by elective cesarean section at 38 weeks of gestation. Longstanding compression of the fetal lungs secondary to the persistent cardiomegaly resulted in severe respiratory distress and cyanosis immediately after birth. Although, mechanical ventilation and continuous infusion o

A seventy-seven-year old woman, with mitral stenosis, presented with cardiomegaly evident on her chest roentgenogram. The cardiac enlargement was due to a giant left atrium that distorted the cardiac structures. An echocardiogram and a first-pass nuclear angiogram were able to delineate the huge left atrium.

We report a case of a markedly enlarged inferior vena cava and a cystic structure simulating a hydronephrotic kidney in the clinical setting of hypertension with cardiomegaly, congestive heart failure and a flank bruit. Ultrasonographic findings with the aid of angiography were highly suggestive of a renal arteriovenous fistula or malformation.

The vertebral heart score (VHS) measurement is commonly used to provide a more objective measurement of cardiomegaly in canines. However, several studies have shown significant breed variations from the value previously established by Buchanan and Bücheler (9.7 ± 0.5). This study describes VHS measurements in Pug, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier, Dachshund, Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, and Boston Terrier dog breeds. Dogs with two or three view thoracic radiographs, no subjective radiographic evidence of cardiomegaly, and no physical examination findings of heart murmurs or gallop rhythms were
