[A study on wounds caused by cats as basic materials of cat scratch disease].

Between October, 1992 and March, 1993, the incidence of bite or scratch by the cat, was surveyed by questionnaire in 1,619 peoples who were veterinarians, veterinary technicians, students and the general population (male 652, female 967). The wound rate by cat: Veterinarians, veterinary technicians, students of veterinary college, students of veterinary technician school were significantly higher than the general population. Incidence of bite or scratch in the cat owner were significantly higher than the non cat owner, and the incidence of wounds in cat owners was more than 90%. Most injuries

Cat-scratch disease and the role of the domestic cat: vector, reservoir, and victim?

An unidentified coccobacillus has been implicated recently as the agent of Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD) in human beings. Although a history of close contact with a domestic cat is frequently elicited from CSD patients, the exact role of this animal in the epidemiology of the disease remains obscure. Current thinking holds that the cat merely serves as an efficient inoculator of a free-living organism. We believe that the cat is not only an important vector of the CSD bacillus, but it may also serve as the principal reservoir, with the organism occasionally present among the oral flora. Under some

Dynamics of domestic cat hepatitis B virus infection in juvenile cats.

Domestic cat hepatitis B virus (DCHBV) is a homologue of human hepatitis B virus (HBV). This study investigated the dynamics of DCHBV infection in a cohort of 70 female cats, aged from 6 months to 10 years. The prevalence of DCHBV viremia was 7.1% (5/70), exclusively in juvenile cats, while antibodies for either the core or surface antigens, or both, were detected in 27.1% (19/70) cats. Most seropositive cats (16/19, 84.2%) had IgM for the core protein, a marker of early acute infection. A follow-up of four viremic cats over one year revealed persistent, high-titre viremia in serum (up to 1.39

Sensitization to cat and dog components and prediction of symptoms in cat-sensitized children.

BACKGROUND: Sensitization to cat and/or dog allergens during childhood represents a risk factor for the development of allergic diseases later in life. OBJECTIVE: The study investigated the association of patterns of sensitization to cat and dog allergen components with clinical symptoms of allergy to these furry animals among cat-sensitized children. METHODS: The children were evaluated for the presence of bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis. Their mothers completed a questionnaire on pet exposure at home. Levels of serum IgE cat epitopes Fel d (1, 2, 4), as well as do

Xanthinuria in a familial group of Munchkin cats and an unrelated domestic shorthair cat.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Four confirmed cases of xanthinuria in cats, and one suspected case based on pedigree analysis, were identified. Clinical presentations varied and included haematuria, pollakiuria, dysuria, and urethral and ureteral obstruction. All cats had upper urinary tract uroliths. Diagnosis was obtained through infrared mass spectrometry of uroliths or urine. Clinical signs commenced at 3-8 months of age and reduced in all cats in the medium to long term after the introduction of a protein-restricted diet. Four cats were castrated males and one was a spayed female. Cases consisted o

Identification of domestic cat hepadnavirus from a cat blood sample in Japan.

The hepatitis B virus (Hepadnaviridae) induces chronic hepatitis and hepatic cancer in humans. A novel domestic cat hepadnavirus (DCH) was recently identified in several countries, however, the DCH infection status of cats in Japan is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the DCH infection rate of 139 cat samples collected in Japan. We identified one positive blood sample (0.78%) from a 17-year-old female cat with chronically elevated alanine aminotransferase. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the DCH strain identified in this study is genetically different from strains in other countries.

Effect of cat litters on feline coronavirus infection of cell culture and cats.

OBJECTIVES: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is caused by infection with feline coronavirus (FCoV). FCoV is incredibly contagious and transmission is via the faecal-oral route. FCoV infection, and therefore FIP, is most common in breeder and rescue catteries, where many cats are kept indoors, using litter trays. Whether it is possible to break the cycle of FCoV infection and reinfection using cat litters has never been investigated. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of cat litters on FCoV infectivity and virus load in multi-cat households, and transmission frequency. METHODS:

Rapid assessment with physical examination in dyspnoeic cats: the RAPID CAT study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the underlying disease prevalence in acute feline dyspnoea and to examine whether historical and clinical examination findings can differentiate between acute cardiac and non-cardiac dyspnoea in cats in primary practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively enrolled cats presenting with dyspnoea for the first time to primary practice between June 1, 2011 and October 31, 2016. We collected signalment, historical and clinical data at presentation using a standard form. Cases were investigated by primary clinicians, and the final diagnosis was confirmed by the authors

Changes in cat specific IgE and IgG antibodies with decreased cat exposure.

BACKGROUND: Current understanding of the effects of reducing exposure to cat allergens is limited. It has also become clear that there are different forms of immune response to cat allergens. OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in skin tests and cat specific IgG and IgE antibodies when students from a home with a cat move to a college dormitory. METHODS: Ninety-seven college students participated in a prospective study that consisted of allergy skin prick testing and serum measurement of IgE and IgG antibodies to cat at the beginning and end of one academic year in college. A subgroup returned

Sensitization to cat allergens in non-cat owner patients with respiratory allergy.

BACKGROUND: Cats represent one of the most important sources of indoor allergens. The sensitization rate can reach up to 60% in western countries. Keeping cats indoors is uncommon in big cities in Turkey, but cats living in the streets are common. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of sensitization to cats in patients with respiratory allergy from Izmir, Turkey, and its relationship to home cat allergen levels. METHODS: A total of 387 patients (70.8% female; mean age, 34.3 years) with respiratory allergic diseases (rhinitis and/or asthma) were included in this study. Skin prick test to

Evaluation of cat and owner characteristics and their relationships to outdoor access of owned cats.

OBJECTIVE: To examine characteristics of cats and their owners with regard to outdoor access of owned cats. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: 184 owned cats admitted to a veterinary referral center for nonemergency health concerns. RESULTS: Cats acquired recently were less likely to be allowed outdoors than those acquired during previous years. Outdoor access was often limited during the day; few owners allowed their cats to remain outdoors at night. Cats acquired from shelters were more likely to be kept exclusively as indoor pets than those cats acquired as strays. The presence of d

Prolonged Bartonella bacteremia in cats associated with cat-scratch disease patients.

Recent evidence supports a causal relationship between Bartonella (Rochalimaea) henselae, cat-scratch disease (CSD), and bacillary angiomatosis. Cats appear to be the primary reservoir. Blood from 19 cats owned by 14 patients diagnosed with CSD was cultured. Blood samples from cats owned by veterinary students (n = 25) having no association with CSD or bacillary angiomatosis were cultured as controls. Eighty-nine percent (17 of 19) of cats associated with CSD patients and 28% (7 of 25) of controls were bacteremic with Bartonella species (chi-square = 16.47; P < 0.001). Twenty-three isolates we

Reported cat bites in Dallas: characteristics of the cats, the victims, and the attack events.

Associated with the increased popularity of cats as pets in American households has been an increase in the number of cat bites reported to health departments. Bite reports from Dallas, TX, for 1985 were analyzed for different aspects of the cat bite event, including characteristics of the cats, the people bitten, the wounds, and the attack events. Cat bites and scratches constituted 25 percent of the 2,494 reported animal bites. Biting cats were typically stray females. People 21 to 35 years old were bitten in numbers disproportionate to their numbers in the Dallas population. Females were th

Tracheal melanoma in a cat.

Extraocular melanocytic neoplasms are rare in cats and occur mainly in the skin and oral cavity. Tracheal neoplasms are also rare in cats, with lymphoma being the most commonly reported tumor. Here, we describe a tracheal melanoma in an 8-y-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat that died after 8 d of cyanosis, dyspnea, and wheezing. Radiographic and tracheoscopy findings were consistent with a mid-tracheal obstruction. Gross findings consisted of a poorly demarcated, pale-yellow, 28 × 16 × 15-mm mass that effaced and expanded most of the mid trachea and partially occluded the tracheal lumen

Pericardial hemangiosarcoma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old, male castrated cat was presented with lethargy, tachypnea, and pleural and pericardial effusion. Echocardiographic assessment revealed an irregular hyperechoic structure that occupied a large portion of the thoracic cavity, expanding from the pericardium and surrounding the heart. Postmortem evaluation, histopathology and immunohistochemistry for factor VIII-related antigen confirmed the diagnosis of pericardial and splenic hemangiosarcoma. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: This case report highlights that hemangiosarcoma, despite being rarely reported, should be co

Pulmonary botryomycosis in a cat.

Pulmonary botryomycosis is an extremely rare bacterial infection that has not been previously documented in cats. This report describes a case of pulmonary botryomycosis in a 10-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat with chronic pulmonary lesions refractory to long-term corticosteroid therapy. Surgical lobectomy of the right cranial and middle lung lobes was performed. Histopathological examination revealed extensive necrotizing and fibrosing pyogranulomatous inflammation with characteristic club colonies composed of Gram-positive cocci surrounded by eosinophilic Splendore-Hoeppli mate
