Genotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility of Aeromonas veronii isolated from aquatic animals in Sichuan, China.

As one of the motile species of Aeromonas, Aeromonas veronii is widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and has been determined as an important pathogen for aquatic in addition to terrestrial animals and humans. In this study, we collected 34 A. veronii isolates from aquatic animals in Sichuan, China. Six housekeeping genes (gyrB, groL, gltA, metG, ppsA and recA) were used for multilocus sequence typing. The results showed that the isolates had high diversity, of which 21 subtypes could be divided into two groups. The group B consisted of 15 new sequence types (ST861-875), and the group A was

Root canal dressings for revascularization influence in vitro mineralization of apical papilla cells.

UNLABELLED: Endodontic revascularization is based on cell recruitment into the necrotic root canal of immature teeth after chemical disinfection. The clinical outcome depends on the ability of surviving cells from the apical tissue to differentiate and promote hard tissue deposition inside the dentinal walls. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of calcium hydroxide (CH) and modified triple antibiotic paste (mTAP - ciprofloxacin, metronidazole and cefaclor) on the viability and mineralization potential of apical papilla cells (APC) in vitro . MATERIAL AND METHODS: APC cultures were kept in c

Rapid and sensitive screening and selective quantification of antibiotics in human urine by two-dimensional ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

A rapid and sensitive method for the screening and selective quantification of antibiotics in urine by two-dimensional ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was developed. This method allowed the injection of 200 μL urine extract. The 200-μL injection volume used in this method increased the absolute sensitivity for target antibiotics in solvent by an average 13.3 times, with a range from 8.4 to 28.5 times, compared with the 10-μL conventional injection volume. A 96-well solid phase extraction procedure was established to eliminate the

Does the adoption of EUCAST susceptibility breakpoints affect the selection of antimicrobials to treat acute community-acquired respiratory tract infections?

BACKGROUND: In several European Countries, by the end of 2012, CLSI guidelines will be replaced by EUCAST. We compared antimicrobial susceptibility results of a large number of respiratory pathogens using both EUCAST and previously adopted CLSI criteria to evaluate the impact on susceptibility patterns and the possible consequences that could occur in clinical practice due to this replacement. For S. pyogenes and S. aureus, the interpretation of susceptibility data using the EUCAST criteria did not produce relevant changes in comparison to CLSI.Against S. pneumoniae, more restrictive EUCAST bre

Antibiotic prescribing for chronic skin wounds in primary care.

The aim of this study was to describe and quantify systemic antibiotic prescribing for patients with chronic skin wounds presenting at the primary care, nonspecialist setting. Data for 1 year were extracted from a general practice morbidity database comprising approximately 185,000 patients attending family medical practitioners in Wales. Patients with chronic wounds (PCW) were identified using Read Codes and compared with nonwound patients who were randomly selected after matching for age-band, sex, and general practice. PCW received a significantly greater number of antibiotic courses than n

Immunoglobulin E binding determinants on beta-lactam drugs.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergies to penicillins and cephalosporins remain an important clinical problem, but structural and immunochemical knowledge of the allergenic structures involved has tended to lag behind the heavy usage, consequent adverse reactions and introduction of new therapeutic members of these two families of antibiotics. Evidence of the increasing incidence of reactions to cephalosporins and to "minor" determinants of the beta-lactams is accumulating. Also, although numerous reports detail unique allergic recognitions of individual members of the two families, particularly the cep

Amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate, a beta-lactamase-resistant antibiotic combination.

The chemistry, microbiology, pharmacokinetics, therapeutic use, adverse effects, and dosage of amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate, a beta-lactamase-resistant antibiotic combination, are reviewed. Clavulanic acid is a "suicide" inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes and has been effective in preventing destruction of penicillins by these enzymes. Clavulanic acid alone has weak antibacterial activity against most organisms. After oral administration, clavulanic acid is rapidly absorbed; amoxicillin appears to increase its absorption. Absorption of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid is not affecte

Bacteriological aspects of infections of the upper respiratory tract.

In this introductory presentation, the bacteriology of acute otitis media, sinusitis and orofacial infections is surveyed, and recent data on antibiotic resistance of the most common pathogenic bacteria are reported. In addition, the difference in the immunogenic effect of capsular polysaccharides from pneumococci and Haemophilus influenzae in children of different ages is mentioned. In acute otitis media and sinusitis, pneumococci and H. influenzae are the most common isolates followed in frequency by Branhamella catarrhalis and streptococci group A. It should be emphasized that the average r

Biofilm formation in Haemophilus parasuis: relationship with antibiotic resistance, serotype and genetic typing.

Biofilms are surface-associated microbial communities, which are encased in self-synthesized extracellular environment. Biofilm formation may trigger drug resistance and inflammation, resulting in persistent infections. Haemophilus parasuis is the etiological agent of a systemic disease, Glässer's disease, characterized by fibrinous polyserositis, arthritis and meningitis in pigs. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between biofilm and antibiotic resistance among the clinical isolates of H. parasuis. In the present study, we tested biofilm-forming ability of 110 H. parasui
