Development of a model to describe the performance of electromethanosynthesis in two microbial electrolysis cells with different biocathode sizes.

Electromethanosynthesis in a Microbial Electrolysis Cell facilitates CH4 production through enhanced reaction kinetics and efficient CO2/CH4 separation, while concurrently facilitating wastewater treatment. Two MECs which differed in the biocathode projected surface area (1.25 and 0.25 m2) were constructed and operated. The results demonstrated that increasing the electrode size led to increased CH4 production and improved MEC efficiency. A mathematical model was developed to describe the two MECs in the COMSOL Multiphysics framework, which simulates the growth of six microbial populations, us

Segmentectomy versus lobectomy for small-sized pure solid non-small cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Segmentectomy has been recommended for ground glass opacity (GGO)-dominant small-sized non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or those with GGO component. Pure solid NSCLC is a special sub-type and has an inferior prognosis. Whether segmentectomy could achieve comparable long-term outcomes with lobectomy for pure solid small-sized NSCLC remained controversial. This study aimed to compare the prognosis of segmentectomy and lobectomy for pure solid NSCLC. METHODS: NSCLC patients with a pure solid nodule (≤2 cm) who received segmentectomy or lobectomy between January 2010 and June 2019 w

Size and density measurements of single sickle red blood cells using microfluidic magnetic levitation.

Single cells have unique biophysical signatures that can rapidly change during various disease states. For instance, cellular density is an inherent property differing between cell types. Characterizing changes in fundamental density properties down to the single-cell level can reveal sub-populations in pathological states. Here, we have developed a microfluidic, magnetic levitation-based assay (MagDense) that detects minute density differences of individual red blood cells (RBCs) down to 0.0001 g mL-1 resolution. This assay fractionates RBCs based on their density profiles in a non-ionic para

Microarray-assisted size-effect study of amorphous silica nanoparticles on human bronchial epithelial cells.

Amorphous silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) are not only abundant in nature, but also the second largest engineering nanomaterials in terms of annual output. Respiratory exposure is the main route for SiNPs to enter the human body. A large number of studies have focused on the respiratory toxicity of SiNPs and demonstrated that SiNPs could induce pulmonary tissue damage, inflammation, fibrosis, and even the malignant transformation of bronchial epithelial cells, while the size-dependent toxicity of SiNPs and their underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. In this regard, a transcriptomics st

Repair of critical sized cranial defects with BMP9-transduced calvarial cells delivered in a thermoresponsive scaffold.

Large skeletal defects caused by trauma, congenital malformations, and post-oncologic resections of the calvarium present major challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. We previously identified BMP-9 as the most osteogenic BMP in vitro and in vivo. Here we sought to investigate the bone regenerative capacity of murine-derived calvarial mesenchymal progenitor cells (iCALs) transduced by BMP-9 in the context of healing critical-sized calvarial defects. To accomplish this, the transduced cells were delivered to the defect site within a thermoresponsive biodegradable scaffold consisting of poly(p

The Relationship between the Size and the Invasion Depth of Tumors in Head and Neck Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which occurs in keratinocytes of the epidermis and is the second most common skin cancer, has a more invasive growth pattern and higher potential to metastasize than basal cell carcinoma. Total excision of the primary tumor is the treatment of choice. For clear excision of the tumor, invasion depth is one of the most important factors. This study was conducted to clarify the relationship between the size and the invasion depth of cutaneous SCC. METHODS: Twenty-six cases were collected for this prospective study. Frozen biopsies were examine

The effect of nanoparticle size on the probability to cross the blood-brain barrier: an in-vitro endothelial cell model.

BACKGROUND: During the last decade nanoparticles have gained attention as promising drug delivery agents that can transport through the blood brain barrier. Recently, several studies have demonstrated that specifically targeted nanoparticles which carry a large payload of therapeutic agents can effectively enhance therapeutic agent delivery to the brain. However, it is difficult to draw definite design principles across these studies, owing to the differences in material, size, shape and targeting agents of the nanoparticles. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to develop general de

The efficacy of intralesional cryosurgery in the treatment of small- and medium-sized basal cell carcinoma: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Cryotherapy has been used in treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In 1993, Weshahy described his technique for applying cryotherapy in depth, i.e. intralesional cryosurgery (ILC), using Weshahy's cryoneedles. OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical efficacy of ILC using Weshahy cryoneedles in the treatment of small- and medium-sized BCC with >5-year follow-up. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This pilot study included 43 patients with histopathologically proven BCCs of the nodular and superficial type. All BCCs were treated by Intralesional cryosurgery (Weshahy's technique) using specially de

Interplay of nanoscale domain purity and size on charge transport and recombination dynamics in polymer solar cells.

Charge transport and bimolecular recombination dynamics were correlated with nanomorphology in polymer solar cells. The morphology of poly(diketopyrrolopyrrole-terthiophene) (PDPP3T) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC60BM) blend films was modified using different solvent additives namely 1-chloronaphthalene (CN), 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and 1,8-octanedithiol (ODT) and their role on steady state and transient optoelectronic properties was investigated. The energy filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) images showed that additives (e.g. CN and DIO) improved the domain purity

Vitamin D signaling regulates proliferation, differentiation, and myotube size in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells.

Vitamin D deficiency is linked to a range of muscle disorders including myalgia, muscle weakness, and falls. Humans with severe vitamin D deficiency and mice with transgenic vitamin D receptor (VDR) ablation have muscle fiber atrophy. However, molecular mechanisms by which vitamin D influences muscle function and fiber size remain unclear. A central question is whether VDR is expressed in skeletal muscle and is able to regulate transcription at this site. To address this, we examined key molecular and morphologic changes in C2C12 cells treated with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and 1,25-dihydrox

Fine structural investigation of Malassezia furfur: I. Size and shape of the yeast cells and a consideration of their ploidy.

Small and medium sized yeast cells of cylindrical or oval shape predominated in two Malassezia furfur-standard strains CBS 1878 and CBS 6001 during the exponential growth phase. Large cells of wide-oval shape were rare. They were encountered at the beginning of the stationary phase in strain CBS 6001, which also tended to form filaments easily. In the scales of pityriasis versicolor, there were large wide-oval or spherical cells besides small and medium sized yeast cells and hyphal filaments. Considering the variable size and shape of the yeast cells, differences of their ploidy seemed likely,

Effects of background illuminations on the receptive field size of horizontal cells in the turtle retina are mediated by dopamine.

Intracellular recordings from luminosity-type horizontal cells of the turtle retina were used to analyze the effects of steady and flickering background illumination on the size of their receptive fields. Both types of background illumination reduce the size of the receptive field to about the same extent. The reduction seems largely due an increase in the coupling resistance between horizontal cells. The effects of both types of background illumination are sensitive to the dopamine antagonist fluphenazine. This suggests that steady and flickering illuminations stimulate the release of endogen

ASM-chip: an antibody-modified size-screening microfluidic chip for high-efficiency circulating glioma cell isolation and clinical application.

Peripheral blood circulating glioma cells (CGCs) are crucial for glioma screening, prognostic evaluation, and diagnostic applications. However, reliable methods for efficient CGCs capture and comprehensive clinical evaluation on whether CGCs could faithfully represent complicated heavy equipment (such as MRI) remain insufficiently explored. Here, we present an antibody modification and size screening-based microfluidic (ASM) chip for effectively capturing CGCs, specifically designed for potential clinical translational applications. The ASM chip consists of one inlet, three outlets, one white

Donor-Recipient Size Mismatch, Age at Transplant, and Elevated Donor-Derived Cell-Free DNA % Early After Pediatric Heart Transplant.

BACKGROUND: Acute rejection (AR) is a major cause of graft loss after orthotopic heart transplant (OHT). Donor-derived cell-free DNA fraction (dd-cfDNA%) is a noninvasive biomarker for AR but may be elevated without AR. We evaluated associations of donor-recipient size mismatch and recipient age with early dd-cfDNA% in pediatric OHT recipients without AR. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study evaluated initial dd-cfDNA% testing in pediatric OHT recipients without AR. Size mismatch was assessed using donor-to-recipient body surface area (BSA) ratio, weight ratio, and allograft left v

Postoperative Defect Size as a Criterion for Upstaging High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treated With Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) criteria classify cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) with a preoperative (clinical) size ≥2 cm as high risk. However, the role of postoperative defect (histologic) size after Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) in cSCC staging remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To compare outcomes of cSCCs treated with MMS that have a clinical size <2 cm but a histologic size ≥2 cm with those clinically ≥2 cm. METHODS: Data were collected at a tertiary academic center. Patients with cSCC were followed for at least 33 months postoperatively. Recurrence, nodal involvem

Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Tumour Size is Associated with Sentinel Lymph Node Metastasis in a Cohort of 69 Patients.

Ten to fifty percent of high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma may potentially metastasize. However, the concept of sentinel lymph node biopsy remains controversial for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. The aim of this study was to identify prognostic factors associated with sentinel lymph node positivity. A bicentric retrospective analysis was conducted between January 2006 and January 2018. All patients undergoing sentinel lymph node biopsy for high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma were included, based on the criteria of the prognostic classification of the French Society of Derm

powerTCR: A model-based approach to comparative analysis of the clone size distribution of the T cell receptor repertoire.

Sequencing of the T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire is a powerful tool for deeper study of immune response, but the unique structure of this type of data makes its meaningful quantification challenging. We introduce a new method, the Gamma-GPD spliced threshold model, to address this difficulty. This biologically interpretable model captures the distribution of the TCR repertoire, demonstrates stability across varying sequencing depths, and permits comparative analysis across any number of sampled individuals. We apply our method to several datasets and obtain insights regarding the differentia
