Age estimation of immature human skeletal remains from the diaphyseal length of the long bones in the postnatal period.

Age at death in immature human skeletal remains has been estimated from the diaphyseal length of the long bones, but few studies have actually been designed specifically for the purpose of age estimation and those which have, show important caveats. This study uses regression and classical calibration to model the relationship between age and diaphyseal length of the six long bones, in a sample of 184 known sex and age individuals (72 females and 112 males), younger than 13 years of age, selected from Portuguese and English skeletal collections. Age estimation models based on classical calibra

Dental affinities of the C-group inhabitants of Hierakonpolis, Egypt: Nubian, Egyptian, or both?

By c. 2050 BC a small community of C-Group Nubians was present deep within Egyptian territory at the city of Hierakonpolis. Their descendants stayed for the next 400 years. Today, the site of Hierakonpolis, 113 km north of Aswan, is known for its Egyptian deposits; however, it also contains a C-Group cemetery, which documents the northernmost occurrence of this culture. Sixty skeletons were excavated. Tombs feature Nubian architecture and goods, including leather garments, although the use of Egyptian mortuary practices and artifacts increased through time. Dates range from the early 11th Dyna

Missing lateral incisors in Iron Age South-East Asians as possible indicators of dental agenesis.

The absence of lateral incisors is generally a reflection of agenesis or hypodontia, with a significant genetic basis and possibly environmental influence on the phenotypic expression. A human skeletal sample from the Iron Age cemetery of Noen U-Loke in Thailand has a very high prevalence at 79% of adults (30/38) with at least one incisor missing in either maxilla or mandible. If the cause of this high rate is genetic, it may be indicative of homogeneity, and, therefore, endogamy and probably isolation, of the population represented. Supporting agenesis as the explanation for this is the lack

Mozart's chronic subdural hematoma.

No commemoration of the bicentennial of Mozart's death would be complete without some consideration of that premature yet predictable demise. Mozart's premonitions of death are well known and apparently played a role in the composition of the K.626 Requiem and perhaps other works. His death has traditionally been ascribed to infectious causes, chiefly rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, exacerbated by intemperance and chronic penury. Pathology has been difficult because of his supposed burial in a pauper's grave, the location and contents of which were later supposedly lo

Nasal septal deviation in a mediaeval population.

In modern populations, there is evidence that nasal septal deviation (NSD) may be associated with maxillary sinusitis, and that those with NSD may differ in craniofacial morphology from those without or with less severe NSD. Whether these associations hold true for earlier populations has yet to be investigated. The current work is a step toward remedying this. The study group comes from a mediaeval English archaeological site. NSD was quantified using image analysis. Maxillary sinusitis was identified from new bone formation in the antrum. Cranial morphology was assessed using standard cranio

Forensic approach to an archaeological casework of "vampire" skeletal remains in Venice: odontological and anthropological prospectus.

During the years 2006-2007, the Archeological Superintendent of Veneto (Italy) promoted a research project on mass graves located on Nuovo Lazzaretto in Venice, where the corpses of plague deaths were buried during the 16th and 17th centuries. The burials were of different stages and are believed to be the remains of plague victims from the numerous outbreaks of pestilence, which occurred between the 15th and 17th centuries. Among the fragmented and commingled human bones, an unusual burial was found. The body was laid supine, with the top half of the thorax intact, arms parallel to the rachis

Frailty and famine: Patterns of mortality and physiological stress among victims of famine in medieval London.

OBJECTIVES: Famine can be defined as a shortage of foodstuffs that instigates widespread excess mortality due to starvation, infectious disease, and social disruption. Like other causes of catastrophic mortality, famine has the potential to be selective. This study examines how famines in medieval London were selective with respect to previous stress, age, and sex. METHODS: This study compares famine burials to nonfamine (attritional) burials from the St Mary Spital cemetery, London (c. 1120-1540 AD). We evaluate the associations between age, sex, and skeletal stress indicators [cribra orbita

The massacre mass grave of Schöneck-Kilianstädten reveals new insights into collective violence in Early Neolithic Central Europe.

Conflict and warfare are central but also disputed themes in discussions about the European Neolithic. Although a few recent population studies provide broad overviews, only a very limited number of currently known key sites provide precise insights into moments of extreme and mass violence and their impact on Neolithic societies. The massacre sites of Talheim, Germany, and Asparn/Schletz, Austria, have long been the focal points around which hypotheses concerning a final lethal crisis of the first Central European farmers of the Early Neolithic Linearbandkeramik Culture (LBK) have concentrate

Markers of tuberculous infection in 17th-century Lucca (central Italy): An investigation through granular impressions on the endocranial surface.

OBJECTIVE: Granular impressions (GIs) on the endocranial surface have been regarded as evidence of tuberculous meningitis. However, recent studies suggest that these subtle lesions more likely reflect disseminated tuberculosis. This study examines the frequency of GIs in an epidemic skeletal assemblage from Lucca (Italy) dating to the 17th century CE. MATERIALS: Excavations at the convent of St Francesco uncovered a cemetery archaeologically and historically linked to an epidemic outbreak, likely the plague of 1630-31. The assemblage comprises 98 individuals of poor preservation. METHODS: En

Heterogeneity in experiences of vitamin D deficiency in an early to mid-19th century population from Montreal, Quebec.

OBJECTIVE: To use the prevalence of prenatal/infancy interglobular dentine (IGD) as a proxy for suboptimal vitamin D status and explore its link to mortality, biological sex, cultural behaviours and environmental factors during the end of the pre-industrial/ beginning of the industrial period. MATERIALS: 50 skeletons from the St. Antoine cemetery (1799-1854), Montreal, Quebec with a well-preserved first mandibular molar. METHODS: Thin sections were prepared for histological examination of IGD in crown dentine. RESULTS: IGD prevalence was 74 % (37/50) and not significantly correlated statist

Psychosocial stressors of adolescents with E-cigarette, or vaping, product-use associated lung injury: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adolescent electronic cigarette (EC) use has reached epidemic rates and has been linked to numerous mental health and psychosocial stressors (PS). There is limited qualitative data on PS for adolescents with e-cigarette, or vaping, product-use associated lung injury (EVALI), a severe complication of EC use. METHODS: All patients hospitalized at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas from 2018 to 2022 and met CDC case definitions for EVALI were included in the analysis. PS were extracted from the electronic health record and analyzed for recurring themes using th

Changes in mortality by tuberculosis in non-industrialized Coimbra (Portugal): Trends between 1861 and 1914.

Considering that before antibiotics and vaccination the course of tuberculosis depended mostly on the patient's immune response, this study tested the hypothesis that the mortality profile remained similar during the transition from the 19th to 20th century. The biographical data of the individuals buried in the Coimbra Municipal Cemetery of Conchada were analysed, and the records of those who were born in the city and had tuberculosis registered as the cause of death were analysed using SPSS. The years of death were grouped: 1861-1870 (n = 124, 22.5%), 1871-1880 (n = 234, 42.4%), and 1910-191

Identifying high-risk subdistricts for targeted dengue interventions: a spatio-temporal study in Mueang Chonburi district, Thailand, 2011-2020.

BACKGROUND: In Thailand, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) under the Ministry of Public Health typically implements dengue interventions at the district level, especially in urban districts and those with recurrent outbreaks. However, such district-level assessments often encompass diverse subdistricts with varying levels of risk. Consequently, more granular, subdistrict-level interventions may offer greater precision and effectiveness than uniform, district-wide approaches. METHODS: This observational ecological study with spatio-temporal components analyzed daily dengue incidence data

Disability in medieval Poulton (Cheshire): A case of hand amputation.

OBJECTIVE: Amputations are rarely identified in the British archaeological record from the Middle Ages, with survival following hand removal particularly uncommon. This study presents a case of a healed left-hand amputation from the medieval cemetery at Poulton (Cheshire). MATERIALS: The study focuses on Skeleton 861, recovered from the Poulton Chapel burial ground, part of a broader assemblage of over 800 individuals dated to the 13th-16th centuries CE. METHODS: Standard osteological techniques were used to establish the biological profile, while radiographic imaging and macroscopic analysi

Sex differences in workload in medieval Poland: Patterns of asymmetry and biomechanical adaptation in the upper limb at Giecz.

OBJECTIVES: This study characterizes sexual dimorphism in skeletal markers of upper limb mechanical loading due to lateralization as evidence of division of labor in medieval Giecz, Poland. METHODS: Twenty-six dimensions for paired humeri, clavicles, and radii representing adult males (n = 89) and females (n = 53) were collected from a skeletal sample from the cemetery site Gz4. Percent directional asymmetry (DA) and absolute asymmetry (AA) for each dimension were compared among bones, osteometric subcategories, and sex. Explaining the Decline in Coronary Heart Disease Mortality Rate Using IMPACT Model: Estimation of the Changes in Risk Factors and Treatment Uptake in Iran between 2007 and 2016.

INTRODUCTION: Coronary heart disease (CHD) contributes significantly to mortality and morbidity in Iran. A model was fitted in this study to determine changes in risk factors and treatment uptake to CHD mortality rate reduction in Isfahan between 2007 and 2016. METHOD: The IMPACT model was fitted to determine how much the decrease in CHD death can be explained by treatment uptake and significant risk factors included in the analyses for adults aged 35 to 84 years. Body mass index (BMI), diabetes, and smoking were considered as the CHD risk factors in the model. Medical and interventional trea

Life in the fast lane: Settled pastoralism in the Central Eurasian Steppe during the Middle Bronze Age.

OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that the purported unstable climate in the South Urals region during the Middle Bronze Age (MBA) resulted in health instability and social stress as evidenced by skeletal response. METHODS: The skeletal sample (n = 99) derived from Kamennyi Ambar 5 (KA-5), a MBA kurgan cemetery (2040-1730 cal. BCE, 2 sigma) associated with the Sintashta culture. Skeletal stress indicators assessed included cribra orbitalia, porotic hyperostosis, dental enamel hypoplasia, and tibia periosteal new bone growth. Dislocation and/or congenital malformation of the shoulder joint. Observations on a Mediaeval skeleton from Denmark.

The purpose of this paper is to present a Mediaeval skeleton of an approximately 16 year old boy, which was excavated at a Danish cemetery containing ca. 150 graves. The skeleton reveals several pathologic changes, probably due to congenital malformation. The most intriguing find is seen at both scapulae, and the changes are bilateral symmetric. Both the glenoid cavities are placed posterior but at the normal height of the bone. The joints are almost perpendicular to their normal direction. The size of the glenoid cavities is normal and the shape is rather flat in accordance to the development

Scurvy in the Great Irish Famine: evidence of vitamin C deficiency from a mid-19th century skeletal population.

Scurvy has increasingly been recognized in archaeological populations since the 1980s but this study represents the first examination of the paleopathological findings of scurvy in a known famine population. The Great Famine (1845-1852) was a watershed in Irish history and resulted in the death of one million people and the mass emigration of just as many. It was initiated by a blight which completely wiped out the potato-virtually the only source of food for the poor of Ireland. This led to mass starvation and a widespread occurrence of infectious and metabolic diseases. A recent discovery of
