In a prospective randomised trial 190 consecutive admissions undergoing emergency abdominal surgery were allocated to receive a 24-h peri-operative prophylactic regime of either cefotetan or gentamicin and tinidazole. Wound sepsis developed in 14 patients in each group and one patient in each group developed intra-abdominal abscess. The protective activity of cefbuperazone (T-1982) was compared with those of latamoxef, cefotaxime, and cefmetazole against intraperitoneal and urinary tract infections in mice. BACKGROUND: Although β-lactam antibiotics are heavily used in many developing countries, the diversity of β-lactamase genes (bla) is poorly understood. We screened for major β-lactamase phenotypes and diversity of bla genes among 912 E. coli strains isolated from clinical samples obtained between 1992 and 2010 from hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients.
