Authors report a paediatric patient with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOC) and complete cervical rib. The symptoms at the time of presentation result from pressure on either the subclavian vessels or the lower trunk of the brachial plexus. TOC is infrequent in young people and usually the symptomatology does'nt need a surgical approach. Some Authors affirm that there are necessary impulsive moments like growth, increased muscular mass and rib ossification, decreased elasticity of ligaments, vessels, muscles and nerves, for outcoming the clinical manifestations. Paediatric competention has risen u

Two young patients with ischemic strokes in the vertebrobasilar basin were observed. The results of the observation verified by brachiocephalic aortography and operation showed that the development of the ischemic lesion because of a circulation disorder in the vertebrobasilar basin in young people could be due to the presence of an additional cervical rib. The leading role in the pathogenesis of those disorders belongs to arterial spasms developing because of irritation of the vegetative structures of the subclavicular artery. The authors consider it reasonable to differentiate between the ad

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is an underdiagnosed condition that is frequently misattributed to cervical spine pathology. Neurogenic TOS (nTOS), the most common subtype, often presents nonspecific upper extremity pain and paresthesia, making diagnosis challenging. We report a case of nTOS associated with a cervical rib that was successfully treated with ultrasound-guided hydrodissection (HD). Dynamic ultrasound examination demonstrated brachial plexus tethering with symptom reproduction. Serial HD resulted in immediate and sustained symptom relief, suggesting that this minimally invasive tec

Cervical ribs, also known as Eve's ribs, are rare and found in 1% of population. They are more common in females and more common on right side. They are asymptomatic in 90% of cases. Cervical rib fused with transverse process of sixth vertebra is rarer. We present a case of dry gangrene of lateral three fingers with right radial and subclavian artery thrombosis with rest pain, due to right cervical rib fused with transverse process of sixth vertebra. After development of line of demarcation of the dry gangrene, patient was operated for excision of cervical rib and sixth cervical vertebral tran

A patient is reported with an anomalous rib that caused compression of the cervical spinal cord and presented with cervical myelopathy. This appears to be the first reported instance of this particular anomaly. The clinicoanatomical aspects of this case are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Cervical patterning abnormalities are rare in the general population, but one variant, cervical ribs, is particularly common in deceased fetuses and neonates. The discrepancy between the incidence in the general population and early mortality is likely due to indirect selection against cervical ribs. The cause for the co-occurrence of cervical ribs and adverse outcome remains unidentified. Copy number variations resulting in gain or loss of specific genes involved in development and patterning could play a causative role.
METHODS: Radiographs of 374 deceased fetuses and infants, i

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a rare neurovascular disorder generally caused by the presence of a cervical rib or hypertrophic scalene anterior muscle that can compress the brachial plexus and/or subclavian vessels. In the vascular form, the symptoms are caused by the compression of the artery and/or the subclavian vein. In the first case, the compression is caused by the cervical rib and leads to hypo-perfusion with cooling and cyanosis of the upper limb, while in the second case, the compression is caused by the anterior scalene muscle and leads to congestion, cyanosis, swelling and pain

Tuberculosis (TB) ravaged the Hungarian town of Vác in the 18th century. Nearly all of the young and middle-aged adults buried in the Dominican Church were infected with TB. Therefore, most women were likely infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) during pregnancy. In rodents, disruptions in early gestation, when the head-to-tail patterning of the embryo occurs, often result in an increased incidence of cervical ribs. Because TB severely disrupts pregnancy, we hypothesized that these disruptions would result in an increased number of cervical ribs in Vác residents. We examined 58 skelet

INTRODUCTION: Cervical ribs are the supernumerary ribs that usually arise from the seventh cervical vertebra. Ethnic and geographical variations in cervical ribs and elongated transverse processes have been reported. Therefore, we aimed to study the prevalence of cervical ribs and elongated transverse processes and morphometry of cervical ribs in Omani subjects using computed tomography (CT).
METHODS: A total of 1165 consecutive patients' CT scans of the cervical spine who had visited the tertiary care hospital from January 2016 to December 2020 were included in the study. The CT scans were s

BACKGROUND: The cervical rib can be a rare finding in asymptomatic subjects. When it produces compression, it affects variably the vasculo-nervous structures of the brachial plexus; the clinical history is progressive. The imaging studies indicate the site of osteo-neuro-vascular conflict and electrophysiological studies indicate the degree of neural involvement.
CASE REPORT: We present a patient with an eight-month history of paresis and right dysesthesias, with an image of bilateral cervical ribs with different anatomical characteristics. This case discusses how a variant of the anatomy pro

OBJECTIVE: Although the supraclavicular approach has been widely adopted for cervical rib resection, a transaxillary approach has been favored by many. We have reviewed more than two decades of experience with decompression of the thoracic outlet to treat thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) in patients with complete cervical ribs using a novel transaxillary approach.
METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of patients undergoing surgery for TOS was searched for patients with complete (class 3 and 4) cervical ribs from 1997 to 2019. All these patients had undergone transaxillary resection usin

We present a case report of a foetus with a herniated Dandy-Walker cyst and bilateral rudimentary cervical ribs. The cervical ribs were visualised prenatally by three-dimensional ultrasound and confirmed by post-termination radiography. The prevalence of cervical ribs is higher in deceased fetuses and neonates with or without structural abnormalities compared with healthy individuals and might be regarded as a marker of disadvantageous fetal development. We demonstrate that evaluation of the fetal vertebral pattern by three-dimensional ultrasonography, including the cervical region, is feasibl

This article describes migraine without aura since childhood in a patient with bilateral cervical ribs. In addition to usual migraine triggers, symptoms were triggered by neck extension and by arm abduction and external rotation; paresthesias and pain preceded migraine triggered by arm and neck movement. Suspected thoracic outlet syndrome was confirmed by high-resolution bilateral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the brachial plexus. An unsuspected aberrant right subclavian artery was compressed within the scalene triangle. The aberrant subclavian ar

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe the indications, technique, and initial outcomes of autologous rib graft with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP) in pediatric patients undergoing posterior cervical fusion.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of all pediatric patients who underwent autologous rib grafting with extra-small rhBMP-2 for posterior craniocervical or cervical arthrodesis at a single institution between May 2020 and July 2023. Patients with less than 3 months of postoperative follow-up and no postoperative CT data were excluded. Primary outcomes inc

"Effort" thrombosis, also called the Paget-Schroetter syndrome or primary thrombosis of the upper extremity, has been well documented in the literature. However, in our review of the United States, Canadian, and British literature, we found only 52 cases in which it was related to sports participation. We report a case of axillary and subclavian vein "effort" thrombosis in a young woman athlete, who was predisposed to thrombosis by all three postulates of the Virchow triad: namely, (1) stasis caused by constriction from a cervical rib, (2) increased coagulability as a result of oral contracept
