Child health and environmental pollution in the Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan.

Environmental pollutants, which may occur in breast milk and in various food products and drinking water, and which are also transferred to the foetus, constitute a severe threat to the health of infants and children. Among such compounds, various organochlorines, such as pesticides for the control of parasites (DDTs, HCHs), and products of industry and agriculture, such as dioxins and dioxin-like compounds (PCBs), are much discussed, in addition to organic mercury and heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium. The consequences of acute exposure to PCB have been documented in Japan following the

Environmental pollution and child health in the Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan.

The deterioration of human health with increasing infant mortality rate, declining life expectancy at birth and increasing prevalence of serious infectious diseases in Russia and other former Soviet Republics is thought to be due to a combination of several factors such as inadequate nutrition, poor sanitation, collapse of the health care system and pollution from Soviet agriculture and industries. In the Aral Sea region in Kazakhstan, the environmental problems are of near catastrophic proportions. As a result of the implementation of a massive irrigation scheme to support the cotton fields i

Measurement and long-term health risks of child and adolescent fatness.

This paper reviews child and adolescent adiposity measures and associated long-term health risks. The first section argues that anthropometric measures are practical for large scale epidemiological studies, particularly the body mass index. Limitations of this and other measures are presented. The second section summarises the evidence on the relationship between child and adolescent and adult adiposity. This is based on a search for relevant literature in the following computerised databases: Medline (1985-96), BIDS (EMBASE and Science Citation Index 1985-96). The literature search revealed t

Child labour in Egypt. II. Impact of work environment on health.

The studied population (1000 children and young workers and 250 controls) were interviewed for health complaints and subjected to extensive medical investigations. Health problems are more encountered among the workers than in the controls, which has been attributed to the impact of work on health and to the low socioeconomic background that compels the children to work, which may constitute a potential health problem from the start. The significant health problems include: a) Respiratory system complaints, attacks of cough, chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma and reduction in FEV1.0/FVC; b)

Child health and nutritional status in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: a preliminary assessment.

Over 85% of Mongolia's foreign trade and development aid, which formerly came from the USSR, have abruptly ceased causing shortfalls in almost all sectors. The UNICEF Mongolia Country Program and the East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (UNICEF/EAPRO) realized that Mongolian children are likely to suffer the most as reduced income and food availability aggravate problems associated with malnutrition. Hence, from 16 June-7 July 1992, a team from the Institute of Nutrition at Mahidol University, Thailand, collaborated with local UNICEF personnel and government health officials in designing and

Some opportunities for biometry in promoting child health in the Third World.

The achievement of 'Health for all by the year 2000' will depend on the attention which is given to improving the health of children growing up in the Third-World countries. This paper explores some of the major areas of concern in this field--infant mortality, low birth weight, infant-feeding practices, disease and malnutrition--and indicates some opportunities for the biometrician to contribute to progress towards the target set for the year 2000.

Social programme receipt and child health, healthcare access and utilisation among low-income US households: a cross-sectional analysis of the National Survey for Child Health.

BACKGROUND: Poverty is associated with poor health and increased healthcare utilisation. Social programmes may mitigate these effects by enhancing the ability to purchase direct inputs into health, improving access. We aimed to examine associations between receipt of cash assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, and free/reduced cost school meals with child health measures among children from low-income US households. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2019 Natio

Adolescent Social Media Use and Mental Health in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes Study.

PURPOSE: Research on adolescent social media use focuses on negative mental health outcomes, with less attention on potential positive outcomes. The current study addresses this limitation by investigating associations between adolescent social media use and both psychological well-being and psychopathology. METHODS: Three US-based pediatric cohort sites participating in the National Institutes of Health Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes study contributed cross-sectional survey data. Adolescents (13-18 years) self-reported the time spent and type of (active, passive) social me

Pregnancy Antitissue Transglutaminase Immunoglobulin A Seropositivity and Maternal and Infant Health in the Child Health and Development Studies.

INTRODUCTION: We examined associations between pregnancy antitissue transglutaminase immunoglobulin A (tTG-IgA) seropositivity, a screening test for celiac disease, and celiac-related conditions in pregnancy and offspring health outcomes. We hypothesized that seropositivity would identify pregnant women and infants at risk of poor health. METHODS: The Child Health and Development Studies enrolled pregnant women from 1959 to 1967 and prospectively followed their pregnancies and offspring. tTG-IgA was measured from stored pregnancy serum using QUANTA Lite R h-tTG IgA ELISA. Pregnant women were

Maternal mental health disorders and offspring asthma and allergic diseases: The role of child mental health.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological stress during pregnancy and postnatally has been shown to be associated with offspring atopic diseases (asthma, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis). The aim of this study was to assess whether this association may be attributable to the child's own mental health disorders. METHOD: The study population included 15,092 twin children born 2002-2010 in Sweden. Questionnaire data at age 9 years was linked to national patient- and prescription registers. Maternal mental health during pregnancy and 3 years postnatally were identified from diagnosis and medicat

The Danish preventive child health examination should expand on mental health and the well-being of the family.

INTRODUCTION: In Denmark, around one in six children has significant somatic, psychological or social health problems, often in combination. The preventive child health examinations have a high participation rate; and they produce significant findings, predominantly concerning the child's physical health. The aim of this study was to explore how the child's physical, cognitive and psychosocial health are examined and assessed at the health examinations of children aged 0-5 years in general practice. METHODS: Our study employed observations of the consultations as well as individual interviews

The impact of HIV-1 infection on child health in sub-Saharan Africa: the burden on the health services.

HIV-1 infection in sub-Saharan Africa is resulting in substantial child mortality and an increase in the number of sick children presenting to health services. Many of the sick children come to health centres and hospitals, inflating numbers on paediatric wards. The presentations of childhood HIV-1 infection are many and varied so that HIV-1 infection is the new "great imitator' of other conditions. Some other infections are more severe in HIV-1 infected children (specifically bacterial infections and measles). However, there is no clear evidence of consequent rises in the incidence of other c

Methylation profile scores in child and adolescent health: a practical guide.

Methylation profile scores (MPSs) aggregate the effects of many DNA methylation (DNAm) sites across the genome into a single continuous value per individual. These scores are rapidly gaining traction in health research, as they translate DNAm patterns into summary measures that can be used to address many clinical and epidemiological questions. Most current research, however, is focused on adults, with little consideration given to transferability to children and adolescents. In this Review, we aim to provide a practical guide introducing MPSs and to discuss the current status of MPSs in child

[Placental Toxicity of Nanomaterials and Assessment of Their Impact on Maternal and Child Health].

Nanomaterials have unique functions due to their increased specific surface area compared to conventional materials. Various nanomaterials are already used in the production of many pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and foods; however, this also means that, regardless of age or gender, it is now impossible to avoid exposure to these unique materials. Currently, there are concerns that nanomaterials may induce unexpected toxicities due to their small size. In addition, safety evaluations related to the exposure of pregnant women and fetuses, who are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of che

Parent Mental Health and Engagement in Parenting Interventions for Child ADHD.

Parenting interventions are a front-line treatment for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, many parents of children with ADHD have elevated ADHD or depressive symptoms, which may impede their ability to engage in and benefit from such interventions. This secondary data analysis examined associations between parent mental health, treatment engagement, and parenting-related treatment outcomes within a randomized trial of 172 families of children with ADHD. Families received either Parental Friendship Coaching (PFC; a behavioral parent training program) or Copi
