PURPOSE: A small number of studies have explored children's perception of speakers' voice quality and its possible influence on language comprehension. The aim of this explorative study was to investigate the relationship between the examiner's voice quality, the child's performance on a digital version of a language comprehension test, the Test for Reception of Grammar (TROG-2), and two measures of cognitive functioning.
METHOD: The participants were (n = 86) mainstreamed 8-year old children with typical language development. Two groups of children (n = 41/45) were presented with the TROG-2

Parent views of specific language impairment have received little attention in the literature, even though speech and language development is the single greatest area of concern for parents. This article examines parental views of events up to, and including, language unit admission for their children. A series of qualitative interviews was conducted with parents. Parents felt that, apart from speech and language difficulties, the children were developing normally. They placed a low value on speech and language therapy, and saw language unit admission as the only intervention that 'worked'. In

OBJECTIVE: Language brokering occurs frequently in immigrant families and can have significant implications for the well-being of family members involved. The present study aimed to develop and validate a measure that can be used to assess multiple dimensions of subjective language brokering experiences among Mexican American adolescents.
METHOD: Participants were 557 adolescent language brokers (54.2% female, Mage.wave1 = 12.96, SD = .94) in Mexican American families.
RESULTS: Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, we were able to identify 7 reliable subscales of language broke

OBJECTIVE: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of training caregivers to use intervention strategies from the Enhanced Milieu Teaching with Phonological Emphasis (EMT + PE) program, delivered via telepractice, and to examine the effects on child speech and language outcomes for children with repaired cleft lip +/- palate (CL/P).
DESIGN: A multiple baseline within subject design across parent behaviors was replicated across three participating dyads. A pre-post intervention comparison was provided with a non-cleft twin.
PARTICIPANTS: Three mother-child dyads participated in

BACKGROUND: Children with language delays (LDs) or language disorders face persistent challenges in their development. Speech and language therapy is vital, and within it, parental involvement is recognized as a key factor in therapeutic success. Although many parent-implemented interventions exist, little is known about the specific roles parents assume, particularly across different diagnostic groups: LD, developmental language disorder (DLD), and language disorder associated with other conditions (LD + X).
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review and synthesize evidence on parental r

INTRODUCTION: The social stigma experienced by parents of children with speech and language impairments is a significant concern, since it can profoundly affect the welfare and assistance provided to both the parents and their children. This study aimed to investigate the emotions and perspectives of parents regarding their children's speech and language challenges, using a survey methodology.
METHODS: This is a comparative and descriptive study that includes 376 participants who have a child diagnosed with a speech and language disorder. A survey designed to assess perceived stigma was imple

OBJECTIVE: Social environments are essential for supporting social-emotional development in children. However, little consideration has been given to social environments children may be exposed to prior to birth and how this may affect social behavior for both generations postnatally. As such, this study considered the impact of maternal social support during pregnancy on infant and maternal social behaviors in very early childhood.
METHODS: Pregnant adolescents from 2009-2012 evaluated their social support and participated in maternal-infant interactions at 4 and 14 months of age to assess m

By means of a longitudinal case study, we demonstrated the course of cerebral reorganization of language representation due to epilepsy in a child with benign epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (BECTS) evolving to Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) and returning to BECTS. The child underwent the following procedures at the ages of 8.2, 8.6, and 9.3 years: 3D source EEG imaging, language fMRI (sentence generation and reading), and neuropsychological testing. He had a follow-up testing at the age of 10.8 years. Further, 24-h EEGs were regularly performed. At the age of around 8 years, the child wa

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between cumulative biological and environmental risk factors and the language development of children less than 3 years.
METHODS: A sample of 253 children aged 2 to 35 months, from an urban centre in north India were evaluated for language development. The main outcome measure was the language quotient (LQ) of the child as evaluated by the Clinical Linguistic Auditory Milestone Scale (CLAMS). Twelve possible risk factors, 4 biological and 8 environmental, were selected. Biological risk factors included preterm birth, low birth weight, history of birth as

Speech and language development is a useful indicator of a child's overall development and cognitive ability. Identification of children at a risk for developmental delay or related problems may lead to intervention and assistance at a young age, when the chances for improvement are the best. This rationale supports screening of preschool children for speech and language delay or primary language impairment or disorder, which needs to be integrated into routine developmental surveillance practices of clinicians caring for children.

BACKGROUND: Many school-age children with specific language impairment produce sentences that appear to conform to the adult grammar. It may be premature to conclude from this, however, that their language formulation ability is age appropriate.
AIMS: To determine whether a more subtle measure of language use, speech disruptions during sentence formulation, might serve to distinguish children with specific language impairment from their typically developing peers at an age when grammatical accuracy was high. We analysed the rate of speech disruptions in simple sentence production in school-ag

BACKGROUND: The aim of many interventions used by speech and language therapists (SLTs) is to change behaviours related to communication and interaction. Parent-led language interventions for children in the early years (0-5 years) rely on SLTs supporting parents to change their behaviour in child-focused interactions to effect a change in the child's communication. Therapeutic techniques used by SLTs in parent-led language interventions are largely underspecified, impacting on intervention reporting, replication, trialling and development. The Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy Version 1 (BC

Mental transformation is the ability to visualize, represent, and manipulate two- and three-dimensional objects. Two common types of mental transformations are rotations and translations. Prior studies show that the production of spatial language as well as the comprehension of specific types of spatial words, such as dimensional adjectives, are related to individual differences in mental transformation in early childhood. The present study aims to unpack this prior research by examining whether the relation is motivated by children's comprehension of overall relational language, or this effec

PURPOSE: Many deaf children have limited access to language, spoken or signed, during early childhood - which has damaging effects on many aspects of development. There has been a recent shift to consider deafness and language deprivation as separate but related conditions. As such, educational plans should differentiate between services related to deafness and services related to language deprivation.
DESCRIPTION: Many deaf children attend mainstream public schools, and the primary service offered to students who use American Sign Language (ASL) is generally a sign language interpreter.

Emerging evidence indicates that the predictability of signals early in life may influence the developing brain. This study examines links between a novel indicator of maternal mood dysregulation, mood entropy, and child neurodevelopmental outcomes. Associations between prenatal maternal mood entropy and child neurodevelopment were assessed in 2 longitudinal cohorts. Maternal mood was measured several times over pregnancy beginning as early as 15 weeks' gestation. Shannon's mood entropy was applied to distributions of mothers' responses on mood questionnaires. Child cognitive and language deve

PURPOSE: This clinical focus article examines six critical elements of a successful and evidence-based summer Intensive Preschool Language Program and the lessons learned over the 9 years of its implementation. The program serves a heterogeneous group of children who have been diagnosed with a language disorder, including children with developmental language disorder, children who are dual language learners, and children identified with other associated conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, all of whom share the goal of expanding expressive language skills.
METHOD: Each critical elemen

BACKGROUND: Late-infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2) disease, characterised by rapid psychomotor decline and epilepsy, is caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme tripeptidyl peptidase 1. We aimed to analyse the characteristics and rate of progression of CLN2 disease in an international cohort of patients.
METHODS: We did an observational cohort study using data from two independent, international datasets of patients with untreated genotypically confirmed CLN2 disease: the DEM-CHILD dataset (n=74) and the Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) dataset (n=66). Both datase
