Optimization and characterization of chitosan-coated alginate microcapsules containing albumin.

In order to obtain small microcapsules with high protein encapsulation efficiency and extended release characteristics various processing factors were studied. Bovine serum albumin-loaded alginate microcapsules were prepared by an emulsion method and further incubated in chitosan. Many process factors were tested including the concentration and molecular weight of alginate, the concentration and pH of chitosan, and surfactants, etc. Microcapsules were achieved with diameters less than 2 microm, high encapsulation efficiency (> 80%) and high loading rate (> 10% w/w). The results also showed tha

Comparative in vitro study of different chitosan-complexing agent conjugates.

In this study we analysed the bioadhesive properties and the enzyme inhibitory effects of different chitosan-complexing agent conjugates. Etylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), respectively, were covalently attached to chitosan by the formation of amide bonds between the primary amino group of the polymer and the carboxylic acid groups of the complexing agents. Whereas almost each primary amino groups of chitosan could be modified by EDTA, DTPA was bound to only 63.8 +/- 5.8% (n = 3; +/- SD) of the amino groups of chitosan. The remaining primary am

Lignin nanoparticle-reinforced chitosan hydrogels for enhanced solar evaporation performance.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation requires photothermal materials that combine efficient solar absorption, continuous water transport, and resistance to salt accumulation. Herein, a lignin nanoparticle-reinforced chitosan hydrogel evaporator (LPCH) was constructed by integrating alkali lignin nanoparticles into a chemically cross-linked chitosan network. The uniformly dispersed lignin nanoparticles functioned as photothermal and nanoreinforcing domains, enhancing light harvesting and increasing the surface temperature to 39.5 °C under 1 sun irradiation. Interactions between the hydroxyl-ric

Graphene oxide-chitosan nanocomposites for phenethyl isothiocyanate delivery in glioma.

Hydrophobic drug delivery remains a major challenge in nanomedicine due to poor aqueous solubility, weak carrier-drug interactions, and uncontrolled in vivo distribution. Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), a hydrophobic anticancer agent currently under clinical investigation, exhibits low bioavailability and off-target toxicity, necessitating improved carrier strategies. Previous studies have explored graphene oxide-based formulations (GO-PEITC) for PEITC delivery; however, the role of chitosan-modified graphene oxide in regulating PEITC behavior through interfacial interactions has not been sy

Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial hydrogel of chitosan-dimethyl itaconate conjugate.

Hydrogels with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial capacity have gained increasing attention in regenerative medicine. Dimethyl itaconate (DMI), a derivative of itaconic acid, exhibits powerful anti-inflammatory activity. Herein, we report a green synthesis of a chitosan-dimethyl itaconate (CS-DMI) conjugate through a nucleophilic substitution reaction, where primary amines of chitosan attack the ester carbonyl groups of DMI to form conjugation under mild alkaline conditions. The resulting conjugate was subsequently crosslinked with genipin into a hydrogel. Our findings indicate that this reac

Carboxymethyl cellulose and chitosan-based tampon for effective epistaxis management.

Epistaxis, commonly known as nosebleeds, is a frequent occurrence that places significant strain on public health systems worldwide. Traditional methods for managing epistaxis, such as nasal packing, can be uncomfortable and may result in complications, such as adhesions and mucosal trauma. In response to this, the use of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), chitosan (CS), and citric acid (CA) as green crosslinkers for nasal packing in epistaxis management was studied. These biomaterials were chosen for their hemostatic properties and biocompatibility. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of

Chitosan-Orientin Nanoparticles Attenuate Hypoxia-Induced Pulmonary Inflammation in Rats.

Background: Hypoxia triggers pulmonary inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to endothelial dysfunction, apoptosis and lung injury. Although the flavonoid orientin exhibits potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, its pharmacokinetic behavior remains incompletely characterized. Nanoparticle-based delivery systems may enhance efficacy. This study investigated whether Orientin delivered via chitosan nanoparticles (CNP-orientin) protects against hypoxia-induced pulmonary inflammation, oxidative stress, and tissue injury in rats. Methods: A total of 48 female Sprague-Dawley rats w

Chitosan-Based Transdermal Microneedles for Synergistic Sono-Photodynamic Antibacterial Therapy.

Bacterial wound infections are often complicated by biofilm formation, which leads to persistent inflammation and multidrug resistance, severely impeding the healing process. Conventional antibiotic therapies are challenged by both overuse and rising antimicrobial resistance. To address this, we designed and fabricated a dual-mode responsive delivery system (CSOAC@MN) based on chitosan (CS) and oleanolic acid (OA) composite microneedles for synergistic sono-photodynamic therapy (SPDT). This system employs chlorin e6 (Ce6), which exhibits both photodynamic and sonodynamic activities, as the cor

Chitosan-coated silver nanoparticles amplify glycopeptide efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus.

The escalating prevalence of antibiotic resistance represents a critical threat to global public health, while the development of new antibiotics remains limited. Vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic, is essential for treating severe Gram-positive infections. However, the emergence of vancomycin-intermediate (VISA) and vancomycin-resistant (VRSA) Staphylococcus aureus strains has raised significant concerns due to their challenging resistance profiles and limited treatment options. In this study, we developed a carboxylic acid-capped silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) platform to enhance the therape

Recent Advances on Chitosan-Based Nanoparticles for Brain Drug Delivery.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) represents a major challenge in effective drug delivery systems intended for treating neurological disorders. It restricts the transport of therapeutic agents to the brain. Chitosan-based nanoparticles (CNPs) can be used for brain drug delivery because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to enhance drug permeability across the BBB. This review article discusses the design and application of CNPs for brain-targeted drug delivery, exploring their mechanisms of action, including adsorptive-mediated and receptor-mediated endocytosis. Antimicrobial chitosan-based hydrogels: A novel approach to obtain sanitizers.

The study presents novel hydrogels obtained by crosslinking chitosan with both furfural and glutaraldehyde via dynamic imine bonds. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the formation of porous networks with a mean diameter of the pores between 15 and 35 μm, while the supramolecular characterization by polarized optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction proved the gelation mechanism. The hydrogels presented great rheological properties, along with an anti-creep behavior. The resulting materials were highly adhesive and had great antioxidant activity, leading to an inhibition of 78 %
