BACKGROUND: Cognitive insight includes the assessment of experiences and beliefs, review of misinterpretations, and awareness of more helpful alternate conclusions. Although there are suggestions that cognitive insight may play a role in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this relationship has not been directly investigated. Childhood maltreatment exposure may influence cognitive insight and be a pathway to impaired cognitive insight in PTSD.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate cognitive insight in PTSD and childhood maltreatment exposure.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This was a case-contr

BackgroundDespite a shared conceptual framework linking both components to impaired inhibitory control, clinical evidence suggests that facilitatory and oppositional paratonia are not equally related to cognitive deterioration, with facilitatory paratonia showing a stronger association with cognitive impairment. Whether this apparent divergence reflects true neurophysiological differences or arises from limitations intrinsic to clinical assessment remains unclear. Electromyography (EMG)-based assessment offers a direct approach to quantify involuntary muscle activation and reduce measurement-r

INTRODUCTION: Recent work suggests that amyloid beta (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) tracer uptake shortly after injection ("early phase") reflects brain metabolism and perfusion. We assessed this modality in a predominantly amyloid-negative neurodegenerative condition, Parkinson's disease (PD), and hypothesized that early-phase 18F-florbetaben (eFBB) uptake would reproduce characteristic hypometabolism and hypoperfusion patterns associated with cognitive decline in PD.
METHODS: One hundred fifteen PD patients across the spectrum of cognitive impairment underwent dual-phase Aβ PET, st

BACKGROUND: While Western research has consistently linked witnessing parental intimate partner violence (IPV) to elevated risks of depressive symptom among adolescents and young adults, the cognitive-emotional mechanisms underlying this association remain insufficiently understood within the Chinese cultural context. Witnessing parental IPV may represent not only a family-based traumatic experience but also a process through which enduring cognitive vulnerabilities become internalized within sociocultural environments. Although such culturally embedded schema-related vulnerabilities are not d

Understanding how instructional design shapes differentiated cognitive outcomes remains a central question in educational psychology, particularly in culturally grounded learning contexts where heritage knowledge must be retained, interpreted, and applied. Existing research on inquiry-based learning (IBL) in heritage education has relied largely on qualitative or non-comparative designs, and heritage cognition has typically been assessed through aggregate measures that may obscure important variation across cognitive levels. This study addresses these gaps by examining whether IBL produces dif

BACKGROUND: Previous research on music education has often examined cognitive development, psychological well-being, or academic engagement as separate domains, and has frequently relied on quantitative or outcome-oriented designs. Less attention has been given to how university students themselves interpret and make sense of music education in relation to these interconnected aspects of their academic and personal lives. This study addresses this gap by exploring non-music university students' perceptions of how engagement with music education relates to cognitive processes, psychological wel

In 8 studies, the authors investigated negative self-thinking as a mental habit. Mental content (negative self-thoughts) was distinguished from mental process (negative self-thinking habit). The negative self-thinking habit was assessed with a metacognitive instrument (Habit Index of Negative Thinking; HINT) measuring whether negative self-thoughts occur often, are unintended, are initiated without awareness, are difficult to control, and are self-descriptive. Controlling for negative cognitive content, the authors found that negative self-thinking habit was distinct from rumination and mindfu

BACKGROUND: As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in healthcare, nursing education faces growing expectations to prepare students with AI literacy. However, nursing students often encounter cognitive, emotional, and practical challenges when learning AI, and their learning experiences across the educational trajectory remain insufficiently understood. This study employed journey mapping to explore how undergraduate nursing students experience learning AI over time. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Seventeen undergraduate nursing students from four uni

We evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of metacognitive interventions for mental disorders. We searched electronic databases and included randomized and nonrandomized controlled trials comparing metacognitive interventions with other treatments in adults with mental disorders. Primary effectiveness and acceptability outcomes were symptom severity and dropout, respectively. We performed random-effects meta-analyses. We identified Metacognitive Training (MCTrain), Metacognitive Therapy (MCTherap), and Metacognition Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT). We included 49 trials with 2,60

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects many body systems, including the nervous and auditory systems. It is noted that there is a scarcity of research on the effect of diabetes on cognitive functions in particular and auditory functions in general in children with type 1 diabetes. Therefore, this study was designed to assess cognitive and auditory functions in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and to correlate the reflection of diabetes control on cognitive functions.
METHODS: This study is a case-control study that included 100 children divided into t

INTRODUCTION: Museums increasingly serve as important settings for cultural learning, yet little is known about whether exhibits whose culturally contextualized meanings contradict visitors' initial expectations can support deeper understanding. Drawing on transformative learning theory, this research examines theoretically connected relationships within a proposed staged framework linking cultural incongruence, epistemic curiosity, critical reflection, and cultural perspective taking. It also investigates the need for cognition as a boundary condition shaping the relationship between critical

Implicit cognitive processing is theorized to have a central role in many forms of psychopathology. In the current review, we focus on implicit associations, by which we mean evaluative representations in memory that are difficult to control and do not require conscious reflection to influence affect, cognition, or behavior. We consider definitional and measurement challenges before examining recent empirical evidence for these associations in anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, posttraumatic stress, depressive, and alcohol use disorders. This examination is framed by a brief review of the ways tha

Metacognitive therapy is a relatively novel and growing psychotherapeutic approach. Within the last 20 years, several metacognitive-oriented therapy methods have been developed. They are metacognitive therapy which was developed by Wells, metacognitive training which was produced by Moritz et al. especially for patients with psychotic disorder, and metacognitive reflection and insight therapy for psychotic patients. Among them, the most structured one seems the metacognitive therapy. The main notion of metacognitive therapy is to alter the dysfunctional metacognitive interpretations and strate

BACKGROUND: Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by primary memory impairment, which then progresses towards severe deficits across cognitive domains. Here, we report how performance in cognitive domains relates to patterns of tau deposition and cortical thickness.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 131 amyloid-β positive participants (55 cognitively normal, 46 mild cognitive impairment, 30 AD) of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), flortaucipir (FTP) positron emission tomography, and neuropsychological testing. Rumination-repetitive, negatively valenced, self-focused thought-is a maladaptive cognitive style linked to emotional dysregulation and psychiatric risk. To investigate its neural underpinnings in a naturalistic context, we developed an fMRI paradigm in which participants observed and reflected on videos of their own past group-based problem-solving sessions, a naturalistic self-relevant context rarely examined in fMRI studies. Thirty-two adults (mean age = 30.4 ± 5.4 years; 13 F) were recorded during collaborative design-thinking tasks in triads. In a subsequent scanning session, each partici

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome (CCAS) is traditionally characterized by impairments in executive functioning, visuospatial processing, language, and affective regulation. Classic descriptions emphasize symptoms such as irritability, apathy, depression, and disinhibited behaviors, frequently associated with vermian or hemispheric cerebellar lesions. We describe a case that diverges from these classical profiles.
METHODS: A case report shows that patient demonstrated preserved overall cognition and absence seizures with context-dependent emotional dysregulation, while mainta

The cortical and subcortical circuit regulating both cognition and cardiac autonomic interactions are already well established. This circuit has mainly been analyzed from cortex to heart. Thus, the heart rate variability (HRV) is usually considered a reflection of cortical activity. In this paper, we investigate whether HRV changes affect cortical activity. Short-term local autonomic changes were induced by three breathing strategies: spontaneous (Control), normal (NB) and slow paced breathing (SB). We measured the performance in two cognition domains: executive functions and processing speed.

Agitation and other noncognitive abnormalities in patients with Alzheimer's disease are present in at least 50% of patients and are a serious problem for caregivers. Agitation can be divided into aggressive agitation, physically nonaggressive agitation, and verbal agitation. Persecutory delusions of suspiciousness and stealing are the most common psychotic symptoms. Auditory and visual hallucinations are also associated with delusions. Similar to delusions are misidentifications, which are false beliefs probably secondary to agnosia. They occur in one third of patients with dementia of the Alz

Although mind wandering is often associated with adverse outcomes, certain thought content may support adaptive functions. This study investigated how latent dimensions of resting-state thought relate to adaptive functioning, mental, emotional, and behavioral problems, and resting-state connectivity patterns in 130 healthy adults. Exploratory factor analysis of the New York Cognition Questionnaire identified seven thought dimensions: five content-related factors (Social Cognition, Self-Oriented Reflection, Interpersonal Reflection, Near-Term Past/Future, and Positive & Meaningful) and two form

OBJECTIVE: Models of anorexia nervosa (AN) posit that set-shifting deficits may contribute to behavioral inflexibility and extreme dietary restriction. Findings from neurocognitive studies of set-shifting in AN have been somewhat mixed, perhaps due to the use of tasks that cannot distinguish shifting from other processes (i.e., learning). To more precisely characterize cognitive flexibility and selectively assess this process independent of rule learning and feedback sensitivity, we examined task-switching ability in AN.
METHOD: Women ill with AN, subthreshold AN or atypical AN (IAN; n = 40),
