Coping with health stresses and remission from late-life depression in primary care: a two-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying the predictors of late-life depression that are amenable to change may lead to interventions that result in better and faster remission. Thus, the authors investigated the impact of two different strategies for coping with physical illness on depression in older, primary care patients. Health-oriented goal engagement strategies involve the investment of cognitive and behavioral resources to achieve health goals. Conversely, disengagement strategies involve the withdrawal of these resources from obsolete or unattainable health goals, combined with goal restructuring. ME

A controlled comparison of family versus individual therapy for adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of behavioral family systems therapy (BFST) with that of ego-oriented individual therapy (EOIT) as treatments for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: Thirty-seven adolescents meeting DSM-III-R criteria for anorexia nervosa were randomly assigned to receive BFST or EOIT, in addition to a common medical and dietary regimen. In BFST, the family was seen conjointly, the parents were placed in control of the adolescent's eating, distorted beliefs were targeted through cognitive restructuring, and strategic/behavioral interventions were used to change

Initial Development and Content Validity of an Occupation-Focused Assessment: Occupations in Higher Education Transitions Inventory.

University students face occupational disruption during post-secondary transitions, yet existing campus screening tools leave occupational challenges largely unassessed. No comprehensive, occupation-focused screening instrument exists for this population. To describe the theoretical development and content validation of the Occupations in Higher Education Transitions Inventory (OHETI), a screening tool assessing university student adaptation across 10 domains of occupation grounded in the Theory of Occupational Adaptation (OA) a five-phase iterative development process was used: (a) initial it

Addressing mental health with daily-life ecological momentary interventions (ALERT) in people at increased risk for mental disorders: A micro-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Elevated levels of mental distress are associated with increased risk for developing mental disorders. Ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) constitute a scalable, low-barrier approach for early intervention. We conducted a micro-randomized trial to investigate the proximal (short-term) and distal (longer-term) effects of EMIs based on gratitude, savoring, cognitive restructuring, and acceptance. METHODS: 72 participants at-risk for developing mental disorders (mean age = 22.9, 67.6% female) completed a 16-day intervention phase during which they received four ecological momen

Common practice elements of cognitive behavioral therapy for gaming disorder: A systematic review and expert panel evaluation.

Gaming disorder (GD) is an addictive disorder with health and social impacts recognized by the World Health Organization. Although the GD treatment evidence base appear to favor cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), knowledge of its common practice elements is limited. This systematic review critically evaluates CBT interventions for GD, encompassing individual, group, and mixed approaches, to identify and synthesize common practice elements. Employing a systematic review protocol following PRISMA guidelines and guided by an international expert panel, this review identified CBT studies and then

Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy for Chronic Tinnitus in a German Tertiary Clinical Real-World Setting.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was shown to be effective in reducing tinnitus-related distress in numerous controlled trials. Real-world data from tinnitus treatment centers are an important addition to controlled trials for demonstrating the ecological validity of the results from the randomized controlled trials. Thus, we provided the real-world data of 52 patients participating in CBT group therapies during the time period from 2010 to 2019. The groups consisted of five to eight patients with typical CBT content such as counseling, relaxation, cognitive restructuring, attention training

Nightmares: from anxiety symptom to sleep disorder.

The DSM-IV-TR definition of nightmares-extremely frightening dreams from which the person wakes up directly-is unnecessarily narrow. Other emotions (anger, grief) have also been reported in nightmares, and direct awakening from a bad dream seems to be unrelated to increased distress. In addition, assessment of nightmares is problematic. Polysomnographic recordings have an ameliorating effect on nightmare frequency, retrospective measurements tend to underestimate nightmare frequency, and persons with frequent nightmares may feel reluctant to fill out (daily) prospective measurements. For study

Classification of performance validity and symptom validity using the Trauma Symptom Inventory-2.

The Trauma Symptom Inventory-Second Edition (TSI-2) is garnering research interest as a symptom validity test in the evaluation of trauma-related disorders. However, there has been limited empirical validation of its validity scales in clinical and forensic real-world settings. This study evaluated the ability of the TSI-2 Atypical Response (ATR) scale to discriminate response bias in cognitive performance and symptom reporting in a large sample of disability and compensation-seeking claimants. This retrospective chart review included 296 adults with a known history of trauma exposure or claim

Neuroprotective potential of epigallocatechin gallate in Neurodegenerative Diseases: Insights into molecular mechanisms and clinical Relevance.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis pose significant challenges due to their complex pathophysiology and lack of effective treatments. Green tea, rich in the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) polyphenolic component, has demonstrated potential as a neuroprotective agent with numerous medicinal applications. EGCG effectively reduces tau and Aβ aggregation in ND models, promotes autophagy, and targets key signaling pathways like Nrf2-ARE, NF-κB, and MAPK. This review explores the molecular process

[Dental fear--relevant clinical methods of treatment].

The treatment of odontophobia is often relegated to treatment under general anesthesia as a quick solution, but this has proven to be ineffective in the long run. Other more cognitive approaches include flooding, where the patient learns through courageous participation to endure the fear through several routine dental treatments. Since this can often backfire on the patient, systematic desensitization is preferred, in combination with psychotherapy that is aided by progressive muscle relaxation or fading, biofeedback training or stress inoculation training. Hypnosis can also help the patient

Breathing retraining, exposure and a combination of both, in the treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia.

The present study investigates the differential effectiveness of three treatment packages for agoraphobia. Patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia (DSM-III-R) received one of three treatments: Breathing Retraining with Cognitive Restructuring (BRCR), graded self-exposure in vivo (EXP), or a combination of BRCR and EXP. Treatments consisted of 8 sessions. Assessment consisted of self-report measures for panic, phobic anxiety and avoidance, depression, general anxiety, somatic complaints and fear of body sensations, and of two respiratory measures (respiratory rate and alveolar p

Regulating Lipid Droplet Interface Based on MFGM to Promote the Humanization of Infant Formula.

To examine whether interfacial milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) remodeling improves lipid digestion and metabolism, three infant formulas (IFs) were developed referencing human milk (HM): IF1 (no exogenous MFGM supplementation), IF2 (wet-mixed MFGM), IF3 (dry-blended MFGM). Interface analysis confirmed IF1 droplets were coated with whey and casein; MFGM assembled on IF2 to restructure interfacial proteins and phospholipids, while most MFGM stayed dispersed in IF3's aqueous phase. In vitro digestion showed IF2 had HM-similar particle size and zeta potential trends, and its free fatty acid relea

[Research on the Construction of Aesthetic Education in Medical Universities Under the Background of New Medicine].

In response to the demand for cultivating interdisciplinary medical talent under the "New Medical Science" initiative and to address challenges such as the marginalization of aesthetic education and its inadequate integration with specialized training in medical universities, this study aims to develop a systematic framework for implementing aesthetic education. Grounded in policy directives and theoretical analysis, this research proposes a tripartite aesthetic education model centered on "Life Aesthetics - Medical Humanities - Practical Innovation." This model is fundamentally guided by the

The effect of CBT-based journaling on emotional responses to clothing styles.

BACKGROUND: Clothing styles influence both outward appearance and internal emotional responses. Adolescents and young adults are particularly susceptible to emotional responses and irrational beliefs related to clothing styles. However, there is limited evidence on the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)-based journaling interventions in addressing these issues among non-clinical populations. This study examined the effects of CBT-based journaling on emotional responses and irrational beliefs related to clothing styles. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial involving 128 adolescen
