Identification of a strawberry NPR-like gene involved in negative regulation of the salicylic acid-mediated defense pathway.

Hormonal modulation plays a central role in triggering various resistant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. In cultivated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa), the salicylic acid (SA)-dependent defense pathway has been associated with resistance to Colletotrichum spp. and the other pathogens. To better understand the SA-mediated defense mechanisms in strawberry, we analyzed two strawberry cultivars treated with SA for their resistance to anthracnose and gene expression profiles at 6, 12, 24, and 48 hr post-treatment. Strawberry genes related to SA biosynthesis, perception, and sig

Characterization of plant growth-promoting traits of bacteria isolated from larval guts of diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (lepidoptera: plutellidae).

Eight bacterial isolates from the larval guts of Diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella) were tested for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits and effects on early plant growth. All of the strains tested positive for nitrogen fixation and indole 3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid production but negative for hydrogen cyanide and pectinase production. In addition, five of the isolates exhibited significant levels of tricalcium phosphate and zinc oxide solubilization; six isolates were able to oxidize sulfur in growth media; and four isolates tested positive for chitinase and beta-1,3-glu

Sesamol derivatives bearing a quinazolin moiety: synthesis, antifungal efficacy against tea plant pathogens, and mechanistic insights.

Pestalotiopsis sp. and Colletotrichum camelliae are two devastating fungal pathogens that cause significant yield losses and quality degradation in tea plants (Camellia sinensis). The increasing resistance of these pathogens to commercial fungicides necessitates the development of novel fungicidal agents with distinct modes of action. In this study, A series of novel sesamol derivatives incorporating a quinazolin moiety were synthesized and structurally validated by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. In vitro bioassays demonstrated that these derivatives exhibited potent antifungal activity, with comp

Discovery of Acaricidal, Insecticidal, and Fungicidal Candidates Inspired by Natural Ethyl Cinnamate Compounds Isolated from Polygonum orientale L.

As a continuation of our research on the pesticide development of Polygonum orientale L., the chemical constituents of the seeds of P. orientale were systematically investigated. Eleven natural compounds (PO-1 to PO-11) were isolated from the EtOAc extract of P. orientale. Notably, compound PO-9 and its dimeric compound PO-10 were first isolated from P. orientale and possessed excellent acaricidal activity against Tetranychus cinnabarinus. With PO-9 and PO-10 as the lead compounds, two series of cinnamate derivatives were further synthesized, and their acaricidal, insecticidal, and fungicidal

Design, Synthesis, Structure-Activity Relationship, and Three-Dimensional Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship of Fusarium Acid Derivatives and Analogues as Potential Fungicides.

In research related to fungicides, the development of compounds from natural products with high antifungal activity has attracted considerable attention. Fusaric acid (FA), an alkaloid isolated from the metabolites of Fusarium oxysporum, is an important precursor for developing pharmacologically active herbicides. In our previous work, we reported that FA has a wide range of inhibitory activities against 14 plant pathogenic fungi. In particular, it exhibited excellent antifugal effects on Colletotrichum higginsianum (EC50 = 31.7 μg/mL). Herein, to explore the practical application in the agric

Vascular plant one-zinc-finger protein 1/2 transcription factors regulate abiotic and biotic stress responses in Arabidopsis.

Plants adapt to abiotic and biotic stresses by activating abscisic acid-mediated (ABA) abiotic stress-responsive and salicylic acid-(SA) or jasmonic acid-mediated (JA) biotic stress-responsive pathways, respectively. Although the abiotic stress-responsive pathway interacts antagonistically with the biotic stress-responsive pathways, the mechanisms that regulate these pathways remain largely unknown. In this study, we provide insight into the function of vascular plant one-zinc-finger proteins (VOZs) that modulate various stress responses in Arabidopsis. The expression of many stress-responsive

Identification of genomic regions for anthracnose resistance in the Andean mapping population of common bean derived from a cross of genotypes Lusaka and Mwezi Moja.

Anthracnose (ANTH), caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, is a major disease of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and an important constraint to bean production in Zambia and other countries. The high genetic variability of the pathogen and the occurrence of numerous physiological races complicate the development of varieties with durable resistance. The objectives of this study were to (i) characterize isolates of C. lindemuthianum collected from Zambia into physiological races and (ii) identify genomic regions associated with resistance to anthracnose in a recombinant inbred line (RIL)

Discovery and characterization of an FAD-dependent glucose 6-dehydrogenase.

Many patients with diabetes use self-measurement devices for blood glucose to understand their blood glucose levels. Most of these devices use FAD-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH) to determine blood glucose levels. For this purpose, FAD-GDHs specifically oxidizing glucose among the sugars present in blood are required. Many FAD-GDHs with high substrate specificity have been reported previously; however, their substrate specificity is insufficient as they also react with xylose. Therefore, we aimed to identify FAD-GDHs without xylose reactivity. We screened and obtained a new enzyme fr

An Attempted Correlation Between the Fecal Microbial Community of Chinese Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii) and Differences in Musk Production and Quality.

Musk, a dried secretion from the sac gland near the urethral foramen of adult male forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii), has significant economic value and is extensively utilized as a valuable component in traditional Chinese medicine. In the practice of forest musk deer breeding, musk with different colors and varying moisture contents is observed during the season when the musk reaches maturity. For many years, researchers have focused mainly on musk composition and symbiotic bacteria. However, the influence of fecal fungi on the production and quality of musk is unknown. In this study, i

The taxonomy and phylogenetics of the human and animal pathogen Rhinosporidium seeberi: a critical review.

Rhinosporidum seeberi is the etiologic agent of rhinosporidiosis, a disease of mucous membranes and infrequent of the skin and other tissues of humans and animals. Because it resists culture, for more than 100 years true taxonomic identity of R. seeberi has been controversial. Three hypotheses in a long list of related views have been recently introduced: 1) a prokaryote cyanobacterium in the genus Microcystis is the etiologic agent of rhinosporidiosis, 2) R. seeberi is a eukaryote pathogen in the Mesomycetozoa and 3) R. seeberi is a fungus. The reviewed literature on the electron microscopic,
