Semi-quantitative analysis of indigo by surface enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERRS) using silver colloids.

In this paper we report for the first time semi-quantitative analysis of indigo using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and surface enhance resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERRS). Indigo, a dye widely used today in the textile industry, has been used, historically, both as a dye and as a pigment; the latter in both paintings and in printed material. The molecule is uncharged and largely insoluble in most solvents. The application of SERS/SERRS to the semi-quantitative analysis of indigo has been examined using aggregated citrate-reduced silver colloids with appropriate modifications to

Sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer using technetium-99m tin colloids of different sizes.

Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) in the treatment of breast cancer is essential for predicting the prognosis and regional control of the tumor. At the same time ALND is associated with pain, numbness and sometimes lymphedema. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a potential alternative procedure to conventional ALND in clinically node-negative breast cancer. In this study, we prepared the technetium-99m-labeled tin colloids with different sizes and compared their efficacy in SLNB. From September 1998 to February 2002, 184 clinically node-negative breast cancer patients were enrolled in th

Evaluation of colloids, crystalloids, whole blood, and red cell therapy in the critically ill patient.

Experimental and clinical aspects of fluid management problems are reviewed; clinical and physiological criteria for efficacy of various plasma expanders are evaluated. Reduced extracellular water is considered the primary defect of shock by those favoring the use of crystalloids, but hypovolemia is regarded as primary by those favoring the use of colloids. The immediate direct effects of various agents in critically ill patients are evaluated using physiologic criteria associated with survival from life-threatening postoperative illness. In general, colloids improved hemodynamic and oxygen tr

Polymer-stabilized zinc sulfide colloids as a candidate calibration material for sulfide determination in water.

Accurate quantification of sulfide in water depends critically on reliable calibration materials. However, existing calibration materials pose significant challenges for routine sulfide analysis, whether they are in the form of Na2S solutions susceptible to atmospheric oxidation or ZnS suspensions lacking physical homogeneity. To address these deficiencies, we developed a series of highly stable ZnS colloids by using zinc acetate, sodium sulfide, and a polymeric stabilizer. Four polymers were demonstrated to be effective, namely, chitosan, hydroxyethyl starch, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and hydro

Polymeric Janus Colloids Enable a New Paradigm of Spatially Confined Enzymes in Pickering Interfacial Catalysis.

Precise spatial confinement of enzymes at oil-water interfaces offers an elegant strategy to enhance biphasic catalysis yet achieving robust and recyclable interfacial assemblies remains challenging. Here, we introduce an amphiphilic polymeric Janus particle platform that enables lipases to preferentially localize at interfaces, thereby achieving efficient Pickering interfacial catalysis (PIC). Crosslinked poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) colloids bearing surface carboxylic acid groups were synthesized via RAFT-mediated heterogeneous copolymerization and further transformed into snowman-shaped

Hierarchical carbon nanodot-nanosheet assemblies as active colloids exhibiting collective motion and environment-responsive emission.

Hierarchical organization of colloidal building blocks can give rise to emergent collective behavior inaccessible to individual constituents. This study shows that polycrystalline giant carbon nanodots and carbonaceous nanosheets, produced from a single reaction, can serve as building blocks for hierarchically organized active matter. In organic media, the giant CNDs spontaneously assemble into nanosheet architectures that form fluorescent microswimmers, exhibiting sustained propulsion, corkscrew-like helical motion, and nonreciprocal body deformation required for locomotion at low Reynolds nu

Observation of nanoparticle coalescence during core-shell metallic nanowire growth in colloids via nanoscale imaging.

The surface morphology and shape of crystalline nanowires significantly influence their functional properties, including phonon transport, electrocatalytic performance, to name but a few. However, the kinetic pathways driving these morphological changes remain underexplored due to challenges in real-space and real-time imaging at single-particle and atomic resolutions. This study investigates the dynamics of shell (Au, Pd, Pt, Fe, Cu, Ni) deposition on AuAg alloy seed nanowires during core-shell formation. By using chiral/non-chiral seed nanowires, advanced imaging techniques, including liquid

Experimental investigation and numerical simulation of in-situ colloid mobilization, transport and colloid-facilitated transport of heavy metals in saturated soil.

Groundwater contamination has gained attention due to its association with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in agricultural regions of Sri Lanka. Beyond dissolved transport, colloid-facilitated transport (CFT) can significantly enhance the mobility of strongly sorbing heavy metals in soils and groundwater. However, few studies have systematically integrated experimental investigation and numerical modelling to evaluate in-situ colloid mobilization and CFT under environmentally relevant hydro-chemical conditions. This study investigated the transport of Cd and Pb in saturated s

Reaccumulation of thyroglobulin and colloid in rat and mouse thyroid follicles during intense thyrotropin stimulation. A clue to the pathogenesis of colloid goiters.

Since Marine's observations some 50 years ago, it has been generally accepted that colloid goiters invariably result from colloid repletion of originally hyperplastic goiters after cessation of the goitrogenic stimulus. However, clinical observations suggest that many goiters never go through a stage of hyperplasia, but are colloid-rich from the beginning. We have injected rats and mice with thyrotropin (TSH), three times a day for 4 d, while the animals were kept on an iodine-rich diet (HID). Additional groups of animals were fed an iodine-poor diet (LID) or a diet containing 0.15% propylthio

Fe (hydr)oxides and organic colloids mediate colloid-bound chromium mobilization in Cr(VI) contaminated paddy soil.

The association of chromium (Cr) with colloidal particles transport in contaminated sites can affect hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) migration and transformation, which is an important mechanism for Cr pollutants in soil and groundwater systems. Here, we investigated colloid and particle-bound Cr migration and transformation effects on rice Cr accumulation during different rice growth stages and different redox conditions in Cr(VI) contaminated soil by pot experiment. Results showed that 13-29% of soil Cr was water dispersible colloid-bound (100-1000 nm) form during rice growth. Using transmissio

From optical gain to lasing with colloidal nanocrystals.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are widely explored as optical gain materials, and throughout over 20 years of research their performance is evaluated through transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) using parameters such as gain magnitude, lifetime, and threshold. In this work, we discuss some of the literature values reported and couple that to different gain mechanisms. Next, we take a closer look at how these actually relate to the physical parameters that govern lasing, as described by the semiconductor laser rate equations, and found some discrepancy with what is usually report

Colloid-patterned surfaces distinguish malignant mechanophenotypes.

Accurate and rapid identification of aggressive cancer cells remains a major clinical challenge. Here, we present a simple, label-free mechanophenotyping platform that integrates controlled colloidal topographies with particle-uptake measurements to reveal biophysical traits associated with metastatic progression. Non-close-packed polystyrene bead arrays were formed on cell culture plates by controlled deposition and stabilized with a thin silicon oxide coating. These arrays display micro- and nano-features with a size range of 0.23-2.3 μm at diverse densities and were used to assess adhesion

Composite colloidal assembly by critical Casimir forces.

We investigate the phase behavior of mixtures of two populations of colloidal particles dispersed in a binary solvent system near its critical composition. The surfaces of particles are chemically modified to elicit a specific solvent affinity for one of the solvents. In this way, fluid-mediated interactions, which involve the critical Casimir effect, become particle population specific. As a result, the colloidal mixture shows a complex crystallization behavior reminiscent of the crystallization of atomic alloys. We show that the exquisite temperature dependence and reversibility of the criti

Collective climbing of colloidal swarms on the vertical wall.

Self-assembled colloidal swarms capable of climbing vertical walls, navigating complex geometries, and operating in confined spaces hold immense promise for emerging biomedical applications. However, harnessing this potential remains challenging as the fundamental mechanisms governing collective behaviors on vertical planes are not yet fully understood. Here, we report the self-assembly of magnetic colloidal particles into swarms that can climb vertical walls. The collective climbing behavior arises from the density-dependent velocity of the particles and their specific magnetic interactions o

Biofilm density regulates diffusiophoretic colloid penetration.

Biofilms are structured communities of microorganisms embedded in an extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix whose dense, polymer-rich architecture strongly hinders the transport of antimicrobial agents and nanoparticle carriers. Diffusiophoresis, the motion of colloidal particles along solute concentration gradients, can enhance penetration into viscoelastic matrices. However, how the changes in biofilm microstructure and density modulate diffusiophoretic delivery of particles is not yet understood. Here, we investigate how biofilm density as characterized by the transmitted light inte

Colloid Adenocarcinoma of the Lung: A Rare and Unique Entity.

Primary pulmonary colloid adenocarcinoma (PPCA) is a rare variant of lung adenocarcinoma characterized by abundant extracellular mucin production, often posing diagnostic challenges due to its slow growth and nonspecific imaging findings. We present the case of a 77-year-old male with a medical history of coronary artery disease (CAD) and congestive heart failure (CHF), who exhibited a gradually enlarging right lower lobe lung mass over eight years. Initial imaging and biopsy results were inconclusive, but a subsequent biopsy following surgical resection confirmed the diagnosis of PPCA. This c

Colloid cyst and multiple meningiomata in Gorlin syndrome.

A middle-aged man presented with syncope and confusion. Neuroimaging revealed a third ventricular mass with obstructive hydrocephalus and bilateral convexity meningiomata. The masses were excised and pathology showed a colloid cyst and WHO grade 1 meningiomata respectively. Multisystem workup confirmed Gorlin syndrome. To our knowledge, this is the fourth reported case of Gorlin syndrome associated with colloid cyst, and the first case where multiple meningiomata are also present.

Hemorrhagic Colloid Cyst Presenting with Acute Hydrocephaly.

Colloid cysts are benign slow-growing cystic lesions located on the roof of the third ventricle that usually present with symptoms related to gradual rise of intracranial pressure. They mostly remain asymptomatic and sometimes grow progressively and cause diverse symptoms associated with increased intracranial pressure such as headache, diplopia, and sixth cranial nerve palsy. Here we report a 47-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with acute severe headache and nausea/vomiting. On MRI examination acute hydrocephaly due to hemorrhagic colloid cyst was detected. Acute hemo
