The path to intervention: community partnerships and development of a cognitive behavioral intervention for ethnic minority adolescent females.

Reproductive health needs for ethnic minority adolescents are a national priority given the population growth of minority adolescents in the United States. United States census reports predict minority adolescents will comprise one-third of all young persons less than 20 years of age early in the twenty-first century. Developing culturally sensitive interventions for minority adolescents includes ecological assessments of cultural priorities, community resources, disease burden, and socioeconomic conditions. These assessments must be accomplished in partnership with the local community. Unders

Improving the FAIRness and Sustainability of the NHGRI Resources Ecosystem.

In 2024, individuals funded by NHGRI to support genomic community resources completed a Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) to evaluate their application of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles and assess their sustainability. By collecting insights from the self-administered questionnaires and conducting personal interviews, a valuable perspective was gained on the FAIRness and sustainability of the NHGRI resources. The results highlighted several challenges and key areas the NHGRI resource community could improve by working together to form recommendations to addres

Adaptive capacity of fishing communities at marine protected areas: a case study from the Colombian Pacific.

Departing from a theoretical methodology, we estimate empirically an index of adaptive capacity (IAC) of a fishing community to the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs). We carried out household surveys, designed to obtain information for indicators and sub-indicators, and calculated the IAC. Moreover, we performed a sensitivity analysis to check for robustness of the results. Our findings show that, despite being located between two MPAs, the fishing community of Bazán in the Colombian Pacific is highly vulnerable and that the socioeconomic dimension of the IAC constitutes the most

A scoping review of facilitators and barriers influencing the implementation of surveillance and oral cholera vaccine interventions for cholera control in lower- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Cholera still affects millions of people worldwide, especially in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) has identified surveillance and oral cholera vaccines as two critical interventions to actualise the global roadmap goals-reduction of cholera-related deaths by 90% and decreasing the number of cholera endemic countries by half by 2030. Therefore, this study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to implementing these two cholera interventions in LMIC settings. METHODS: A scoping review using the methods presented by Ar

Understanding the challenges and gaps in community engagement interventions for COVID-19 prevention strategies in Rohingya refugees: a qualitative study with frontline workers and community representatives.

BACKGROUND: Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are vulnerable to infectious diseases such as COVID-19 due to the crowded living conditions with fragile shelters, and limited water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and practices. While risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) is the cornerstone of outbreak control, there is limited evidence available on the effectiveness of the RCCE strategies in this setting. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of RCCE strategies and to explore the challenges and community recommendations in relation to COVID-19 prevent

Developing a toolkit for building a community hospital clinical research program.

PURPOSE: Although health research in Canada is primarily conducted in academic hospitals, most patients receive their care in community hospitals. The benefits of increasing research capacity in community hospitals include improved study recruitment, increased generalizability of results, broader patient access to novel therapies, better patient outcomes, enhanced staff satisfaction, and improved organizational efficiency. Nevertheless, building research programs in community hospitals remains challenging because of a lack of support and expertise. To address this gap, we developed a toolkit t

Cultivating Collaboration in BioMolViz: Key Attributes for Building a STEM Educator Community of Practice.

BioMolViz is an educational community of practice (CoP) focused on creating resources to improve biomolecular visual literacy instruction and assessment. The community of life science instructors developed in three phases, beginning with a small Core Team that emerged from a conference session and established the domain of interest for the CoP. In-person workshops, supported by short-term funding, drove the initial expansion of the community and the development of shared activities in Phase 2. This CoP was sustained through intentional choices about how members interact, collaborate, and share

Protocol for a community-engaged mixed-methods study for climate-related disaster preparedness and health care resilience in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Climate change-induced disasters pose an enormous risk to human health. With the risk of climate change disasters at an all-time high, it is imperative to strengthen the resilience of health and community systems. Working with community collaborators who provide services across the spectrum of the disaster cycle will make disaster preparedness plans context-specific, sustainable, and accepted by the community. Using evidence-based Implementation Science approaches can facilitate the development and evaluation of community-academic partnership initiatives to build responsive and res

Identifying Informal Help-Seeking Patterns in African American Couples.

While African American couples are less likely to seek formal resources, such as couples therapy, that does not mean they do not seek relationship support. The literature suggests that informal or community resources play a large role in supporting African American couples. Yet, up to this point, quantitative research has yet to identify specific factors that increase informal couple help-seeking for African Americans. To address this gap, we examine how discrimination, racial identity, and religiosity are associated with informal couple help-seeking. We use two distinct types of common inform
