Greenhouse gases (GHGs) monitoring is essential for mitigating emissions from anthropogenic activities, yet the deployment of high-precision analyzers remains constrained by cost and operational complexity. Low-cost GHGs sensors often suffer from signal drift, cross-sensitivity, and unstable responses under extreme temperature and humidity conditions. To address these challenges, GHGsNet was developed as a low-cost, process-aware deep learning framework for predicting CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions during composting, a representative high temperature and high humidity anthropogenic activity. GHGs

Spent coffee grounds (SCGs) and lignin-derived binders, such as ammonium lignosulfonate (ALS), are increasingly being explored as renewable resources to reduce reliance on conventional formaldehyde-based resins in wood-fiber biocomposites. Although prior work has shown that SCG-ALS adhesive systems can achieve promising mechanical performance, two practical aspects essential for industrial applications and circular design remain insufficiently explored: a predictable and reproducible visual appearance and credible end-of-life options. In this study, sustainable wood-fiber biocomposites bonded

The treatment of fish manure from industrial recirculating aquaculture systems (IRAS) is challenging due to its low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio and poor separability. This study investigated the optimization of composting efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation for such manure using a rotating-bin system. A self-developed concentration technique was employed to obtain the feedstock, which was composted under varying rotational aeration frequencies. We comprehensively assessed the process by analyzing physicochemical parameters, product maturity, gas emissions (N2O, CH4, NH3, CO2), and micr

The impact of NaOH-modified biochar on the release of NH3 and H2S from laying hens' manure was examined for 44 days, using a small-scale simulated aerobic composting system. The findings revealed that the NaOH-modified biochar reduced NH3 and H2S emissions by 40.63% and 77.78%, respectively, compared to the control group. Moreover, the emissions of H2S were significantly lower than those of the unmodified biochar group (p < 0.05). The increased specific surface area and microporous structure of the biochar, as well as the higher content of alkaline and oxygenated functional groups, were found

Around 143,000 chemicals find their fate in wastewater treatment plants in the European Union. Low efficiency on their removal at lab-based studies and even poorer performance at large scale experiments have been reported. Here, a coupled biological technology (bioaugmentation and composting) is proposed and proved for pharmaceutical active compounds degradation and toxicity reduction. The optimization was conducted through in situ inoculation of Penicillium oxalicum XD 3.1 and an enriched consortium (obtained from non-digested sewage sludge), into pilot scale piles of sewage sludge under real

Abundant residues of tetracyclines in animal manures and manure-derived organic fertilizers can pose a substantial risk to environments. However, our knowledge on the residual levels and potential risk of tetracyclines and their transformation products (TPs) in manure and manure-derived organic fertilizers produced by different composting treatments is still limited. Herein, the occurrence and distribution of four veterinary tetracyclines (tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline) and ten of their TPs were investigated in paired samples of fresh manure and manure-deriv

There are several issues such as low maturity degree of compost product and severe pollution gas emissions during the composting process. Carbon/Nitrogen (C/N) ratio and aeration rate (AR) are the most important factors affecting the composting performance. According to the results of previous studies, the proper C/N ratio and AR were 20-30:1 and 0.1-0.4 L kg-1 DM·min-1, respectively. Therefore, a lab-scale experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of C/N ratio and AR on sheep manure composting process and associated gaseous emissions. The initial C/N ratio in this experiment were se

Aerobic composting is considered as an economically as well as environmentally friendly technology that prevents the diffusion of ARGs and ARBs from manure to farmland soil, on which many studies have been conducted. However, the transmission route and potential ecological risks of ARGs in soil-vegetable systems after application of manure at different maturity stages remain unclear. Therefore, through a pot experiment, this study analyzed the effects of manure composted from livestock excrement on ARGs and microbial community in different soil-vegetable systems, taking leafy plants (Shanghai

In times of climate change, practicing a form of sustainable, climate-resilient and productive agriculture is of primordial importance. Compost could be one form of sustainable fertilizer, which is increasing humus, water holding capacity, and nutrient contents of soils. It could thereby strengthen agriculture toward the adverse effects of climate change, especially when additionally combined with biochar. To get access to sufficient amounts of suitable materials for composting, resources, which are currently treated as waste, such as human excreta, could be a promising option. However, the sa

Sugarcane processing generates a large quantity of residues, such as filter cake and ashes, which are sometimes composted prior to their amendment in soil. However, important issues still have to be addressed on this subject, such as the description of bacterial succession that occurs throughout the composting process and the possibilities of using phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) during the process to improve phosphorus (P) availability in the compost end product. Consequently, this study evaluated the bacterial diversity and P dynamics during the composting process when inoculated with

Aerobic composting is an effective pathway for the resource utilization of livestock waste; successful treatment achieves not only efficient nutrient conversion but also attenuates hazardous contaminants like antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), thereby reducing the safety risks associated with waste application. As a globally prevalent livestock disinfectant, Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) inevitably accumulates as residues in manure. However, whether these residues compromise the microbial mitigation of antibiotics and ARGs during composting remains unclear. Here, we inve

Composting organic waste offers a circular solution to recycle nutrients and restore soil health, but nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) losses during the process undermine its agricultural and climate benefits. Here, using a machine learning approach, we analyse 848 global manure, food waste and sewage sludge composting experiments, identifying 19 key management parameters that drive ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. We estimate annual global losses during the composting process at 747 kt NH3-N, 81 kt N2O-N and 592 kt CH4-C, equivalent to ~61 MtCO2

Accurate prediction of NH3 and H2S emissions is essential for odor-risk control and process management during composting, but remains challenging because emissions are driven by nonlinear, stage-dependent, and interacting operating conditions. In this study, we developed an interpretable cross-study machine-learning framework for NH3 and H2S prediction using routinely monitored composting variables. A harmonized dataset from 46 published studies provided 542 NH3 and 496 H2S observations after quality control and predictor screening. Five algorithms were benchmarked under study-wise grouped val

During green waste (GW) composting, substantial emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) contribute to carbon loss, inhibit humification, and increase environment burdens. This study investigated the effects of malonic acid (MA; 0 %, 0.5 %, 1.0 %) and biochar (BC; 0 %, 10 %, 20 %) on carbon loss, humic substance (HS) formation, and the dynamics of cbbL-containing autotrophic microorganism (CCAM) during GW composting. Among all treatments, the co-application of 0.5 % MA and 20 % BC significantly enhanced composting performance by reducing CO2 and CH4 emissions by 34.3 % and 30.6 %, r

Composting converts organic solid waste into humus to enhance land quality, yet excessive carbon loss in conventional composting limits compost quality. This study explored the mechanisms by which exogenous additives enhance organic carbon conversion and humus synthesis, analyzing the distinct roles of shaping bacterial community structure and resource utilize in malonic acid addition group (MA) and biochar addition group (BR). Compared to CK, cumulative CO2 emission release reduced by 33.1 % and 37.9 % in MA and BR, respectively. SPEC-OCCU showed fewer specialized species in MA (24) and BR (1

Composting has emerged as a suitable method to convert or transform organic waste including manure, green waste, and food waste into valuable products with several advantages, such as high efficiency, cost feasibility, and being environmentally friendly. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly malodorous gases, are the major concern and challenges to overcome in facilitating composting. Ammonia (NH3) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and methyl mercaptan (CH4S), primarily contributed to the malodorous gases emission during the entire composting

Composting is a biological reaction caused by microorganisms. Composting efficiency can be adequately increased by adding biochar and/or by inoculating with exogenous microorganisms. In this study, we looked at four methods for dewatered sludge waste (DSW) and wheat straw (WS) aerobic co-composting: T1 (no additive), T2 (5% biochar), T3 (5% of a newly isolated strain, Xenophilus azovorans (XPA)), and T4 (5% of biochar-immobilized XPA (BCI-XPA)). Throughout the course of the 42-day composting period, we looked into the carbon dynamics, humification, microbial community succession, and modificat

The combined effects of microbial inoculants (MI) and magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP; struvite) on organic matter (OM) biodegradation and nutrients stabilization during biowaste composting have not yet been investigated. Therefore, the effects of MI and MAP on OM stability and P species during swine manure composting were investigated using geochemical and spectroscopic techniques. MI promoted the degradation of carbohydrates and aliphatic compounds, which improved the degree of OM mineralization and humification. MI and MAP promoted the redistribution of P fractions and species during comp

This paper investigated the effects of attapulgite addition on the physicochemical processes, heavy metal transformation, and microbial community during the composting of agricultural wastes and sediment. In addition, the correlation between environmental factors, heavy metals (HMs), and microbial community was also assessed by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that pile B with attapulgite addition entered the thermophilic phase earlier and lasted longer than pile A as the control group. The reduction in the bioavailability of HMs (Cr, Cd, and Zn) was also greater in pile B, and th

The quality of compost is drastically reduced due to the loss of carbon, which negatively impacts the environment. Carbon emission reduction and carbon dioxide (CO2) fixation have attracted much attention in composting research. In this study, the relationship between CO2 emission, humic substances (HS) formation and cbbL-containing autotrophic microbes (CCAM) was analyzed by adding biochar during cow manure composting. The results showed that biochar can facilitate the degradation of organic matter (OM) and formation of HS, as well as reinforce the diversity and abundance of CCAM community, t
