First-grade cognitive abilities as long-term predictors of reading comprehension and disability status.

In a sample of 195 first graders selected for poor reading performance, the authors explored four cognitive predictors of later reading comprehension and reading disability (RD) status. In fall of first grade, the authors measured the children's phonological processing, rapid automatized naming (RAN), oral language comprehension, and nonverbal reasoning. Throughout first grade, they also modeled the students' reading progress by means of weekly Word Identification Fluency (WIF) tests to derive December and May intercepts. The authors assessed their reading comprehension in the spring of Grades

The contribution of clinical neurophysiology to the comprehension of the tension-type headache mechanisms.

So far, clinical neurophysiological studies on tension-type headache (TTH) have been conducted with two main purposes: (1) to establish whether some neurophysiological parameters may act as markers of TTH, and (2) to investigate the physiopathology of TTH. With regard to the first point, the present results are disappointing, since some abnormalities found in TTH patients may be frequently observed also in migraineurs. On the other hand, clinical neurophysiology has played an important role in the debate about the pathogenesis of TTH. Studies on the exteroceptive suppression of the temporalis

Perceptual organization, phonological awareness, and reading comprehension in adults with and without learning disabilities.

It is not clear from research whether, or to what extent, reading comprehension is impaired in adults who have learning disabilities (LD). The influence of perceptual organization (PO) and phonological awareness (PA) on reading comprehension was investigated. PO and PA are cognitive functions that have been examined in previous research for their roles in nonverbal LD and phonological dyslexia, respectively. Nonverbal tests of PO and non-reading tests of PA were administered to a sample of adults with postsecondary education. Approximately two thirds of the sample had previously been diagnosed

Working memory and sentence comprehension of Hong Kong Chinese children with specific language impairment.

Children with Specific Language Impairment present with delayed language development, but do not have a history of hearing impairment, mental deficiency, or associated social or behavioral problems. Non-word repetition was suggested as an index to reflect the capacity of phonological working memory. There is a paucity of such studies among Hong Kong Chinese children. This preliminary study aimed to examine the relationship between phonological working memory and Specific Language Impairment, through the processes of non-word repetition and sentence comprehension, of children with Specific Lang

The neural bases of sentence comprehension: a fMRI examination of syntactic and lexical processing.

One of the challenges to functional neuroimaging is to understand how the component processes of reading comprehension emerge from the neural activity in a network of brain regions. In this study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine lexical and syntactic processing in reading comprehension by independently manipulating the cognitive demand on each of the two processes of interest. After establishing a consistency with earlier research showing the involvement of the left perisylvian language areas in both lexical access and syntactic processing, the study produced n

Comprehension of cause-effect relations in a tool-using task by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Five chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were tested to assess their understanding of causality in a tool task. The task consisted of a transparent tube with a trap-hole drilled in its middle. A reward was randomly placed on either side of the hole. Depending on which side the chimpanzee inserted the stick into, the candy was either pushed out of the tube or into the trap. In Experiment 1, the success rate of 2 chimpanzees rose highly above chance, but that of the other subjects did not. Results show that the 2 successful chimpanzees selected the correct side for insertion beforehand. Experiment 2 r

The consequences of reduced memory span for the comprehension of semantic versus syntactic information.

Aphasic patients with restricted memory spans were assessed on their comprehension of syntactically simple sentences varying in numbers of content words and on their comprehension of sentences matched in content words but varying in syntactic complexity. Three different presentation modes were used: unlimited visual presentation, limited visual presentation, and auditory presentation. The difference between performance in the unlimited and limited modes was used as a measure of the extent to which memory decrements caused comprehension failure. These difference scores were related to memory sp

Comprehension of nonverbal communication: a reexamination of the social competencies of learning-disabled children.

This study was designed to determine whether learning-disabled (LD) children differed from nondisabled (NLD) children in their ability to comprehend nonverbal communication when potential attentional differences between the groups were controlled. In addition, the relationship between nonverbal comprehension and social competence was assessed. Thirty LD and 30 NLD boys between 9 and 12 years of age were administered a short form of the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS) to assess nonverbal comprehension; social competence measures included teachers' ratings of aggressive and withdrawn beh

Language prediction in multimodal contexts: The contribution of iconic gestures to anticipatory sentence comprehension.

Evidence shows listeners predict upcoming words, and iconic gestures in face-to-face dialogue often precede their spoken referents. A recent framework proposes that early-onset gestures can pre-activate the meaning of upcoming nouns. This pre-registered EEG study tested this proposal. 81 Dutch adults watched videos of an actress producing discourses ending with a target noun. The noun was either predictable or not from the discourse. Each noun was paired with an iconic gesture whose stroke began either 520 msec (earlier) or 130 msec (later) before the noun. Discourse predictability produced th

Alpha rhythms in the left auditory cortex set the speed limit for speech comprehension.

Human cognition operates within distinct temporal windows spanning from very short to extremely long. Each cognitive function has its own processing speed range, beyond which performance deteriorates or even becomes impossible. Speech comprehension, as one of the most important cognitive functions in civilized societies, exemplifies this constraint: Performance declines markedly when speech rates exceed about 10 syllables per second. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this speed limit remain unclear. Here, by combining psychophysics, scalp-electroencephalography, transcranial alternatin

Impact of GPT-4-Generated Discharge Letters on Patients' Medical Comprehension: Prospective Crossover Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients often struggle to understand standard hospital discharge letters, increasing the risk of medication errors and misunderstandings. According to cognitive load theory (CLT), complex, information-dense texts can overload working memory and impair comprehension. Artificial intelligence tools that generate patient-centered versions could help reduce extraneous cognitive load and bridge this gap. However, evidence for their effectiveness remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether GPT-4 (OpenAI)-generated patient-centered letters improve standardized patien

Perspective reasoning and the real-time comprehension of spoken narrative: Insights from eye movements.

Various aspects of communicative meaning hinge on issues of perspective, and key components of perspective reasoning are known to accompany real-time language comprehension. Drawing on the Visual World Paradigm, past studies have shown that listeners' ability to manage privileged knowledge about objects' existence or presence in a context is more effective than the ability to manage privileged knowledge about objects' identity. The present study tests the generalizability of these findings in a situation where listeners are processing spoken narratives. The central question is how effectively

The Influence of Aphasia Type and Severity on Sentence Comprehension after Left Hemisphere Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Sentence comprehension relies on the integrity of a left-lateralized language network that is frequently disrupted following left hemisphere stroke. While comprehension deficits are well documented in Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia, less is known about how sentence comprehension varies across the broader aphasia spectrum, including types traditionally viewed as comprehension-intact, such as anomic and latent aphasia. AIMS: This study examined how sentence comprehension varies as a function of aphasia type and severity, with particular focus on comprehension of syntactically comple

Analysis of the comprehension and familiarity among the Saudi Arabian population regarding multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system, characterized by immune-mediated demyelination and axonal degeneration. Its development is influenced by genetic susceptibility, immune dysregulation, and environmental factors such as viral infections, vitamin D deficiency, and smoking. MS affects over 2.3 million people globally, with prevalence varying by region, including an increasing trend in Saudi Arabia. Despite the growing burden, public awareness of MS in Saudi Arabia remains limited, contributing to delayed diagnosis and poore

Anterior temporal lobe, word comprehension, and physiology of atrophy in semantic primary progressive aphasia.

Peak focal atrophy in the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) highlights the critical role of this area for word comprehension in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA). However, the assumption that peak atrophy sites are specific markers of dysfunctional brain sites, and therefore reliable variables for clinicopathologic correlations, has not been rigorously tested. Using structural MRI and FDG-PET, we assessed atrophy and hypometabolism in 32 individuals with PPA (11 svPPA) and 10 healthy controls. Word comprehension was measured using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Voxel-based
